    Default Dwarfman's NL Ring Challenge!

OK, here's a challenge for you, and it will only cost you $10!

The challenge is to start off by buying into a .25/.50 NL ring game for the minimum, $10. Then as you make the minimum for the next level, you MUST move up and buy in for the minimum there, then you progress up.

    Rules

    1. You MUST buy in for the minimum in each level.
    2. You can only move up once you have reached the minimum buy in for the next level above you (eg. you must make it to $20 playing .25/.50 to move up).
    3. Once you have reached the minimum buy in for the next level, you MUST go there immediately.
    4. If you bust out at any stage, you have to go back to the beginning and buy in for $10 at .25/.50.
    5. If you double up at 10/20 ($800), you have completed Dwarfman's NL Ring Challenge.
    6. NLHE Ring only!!
    7. If you go just over your next level target (eg. going to $23 at .25/.50), you still must buy in for the minimum at the next level.
    8. Full ring OR 6 max are both allowed.
    9. You may pull out at any stage if you wish, however you will lose out on satisfaction!!
    10. If you complete the challenge, we would love to see your hand history, make sure you store them!
    11. You are allowed to play this challenge at any Party skins or Pokerstars.

    Steps

    .25/.50 - $10
    .50/1 - $20
    1/2 - $40
    2/4 - $80
    3/6 - $120
    5/10 - $200
    10/20 - $400

If you double up to $800 at 10/20 NL, you WIN.

Please note that it is very, very, very hard to complete this challenge, if you do I will be thoroughly impressed!

The reason I made it is because it is an opportunity to play very high stakes and it will only cost you $10 if you lose.

Good luck and have fun - remember to post your best runs here!

sounds like a cool variation on "steps." 25nl shortstacked is going to be SUPER boring though...

It came into my head after I bought in for the minimum at a .5/1 NL ring, and quite easily pwned the hell out of it. I'm going to try the full challenge today.

You start with $10 at $50NL!
  9. #9
Sounds like fun, I kind of do that already, but usually cash out once I get to 100 or so. My question is, how long did this take you?? Or is this spread out over multiple days? I guess it shouldn't take longer then a multitable tourney though.

Do you work for Stars? Are you trying to increase their rakes? heh heh

This looks interesting. I don't like the low buy-ins (compared to the blinds) though, it seems like the bigger stacks might be able to push you around.

accepted. .25/.5 6max is down. A3 on an a24 flop. I check-raise AI and get running jacks to beat 24s.

EDIT .5/1 completed. K7 in the sb, limp pot board is T8222 checked to the river, I check-raise a button river bet AI and win the pot to put me over 40.

EDIT It's over. A7s in the bb. Called a raise, flop come A24, op beat weak, I check-raise AI and he rakes the pot with ATo.

    I will win this challenege.

Attempt #2 busted out. KJ chased me all the way to the river to catch a 4th heart on the board and crack my paired ace.

Round 3, level 1 complete. From the bb I turned a straight and check it through to the river. When op said I checked the nuts i went "lol!!! I didnt kno!!!" And went on to bet and never get to showdown becuase i was the guy who doesnt even bet with straights. Grinded my 10 bucks. I'll continue later. I've got shit to do.

Question: Is this challenge +EV or -EV? Why?

I would suggest that it MUST be possible to complete in fewer than 80 tries even just through dumb luck, therefore +EV. Thoughts?
TylerK: its just gambling if i want to worry about money i'll go to work lol
  26. #26
I think it's probably +EV if you're good at short stack play. If you're just counting on luck, it's probably -EV - too hard to survive the number of coinflips required to get all the way through.

My first attempt just ended on (sob) level 1. I was pitted against another short stack and after we traded blows several times, I finally took a leap on a hand where I had a pair + an open ended straight draw. Missed my outs against his top pair and lost my pitiful buy-in.

It may even be +EV within 100 tries (due to the fractions of buy-ins you gain by only buying in the minimum at the next level)

    I'm gonna make it +EV.

    Reassuming my quest. Level 2.

EDIT -- Hehehe, "That's the first time i've ever seen quads with 2 of your own cards!" Its soooo fun being a n00b.

EDIT- cold cards, I dont even think i've seen a flop outside of the blinds. Stack is stagnant. Did have 99 and 2 limpers and decided not to push.. for some reason.

EDIT-- Was down to about 12 bucks but doubled up with AJ vrs 55

EDIT-- AK vrs JJ and im done. Maybe i'll try again tomorrow.

Anyone have any opinions on whether this is easier at full ring or 6 max? I usually play 6 max cash games, but it seems like with full ring you could camp longer and just push with the first really good hand that comes along. With 6 max there's more skill required to make the next level, and you might have to survive more coin flips... am I right?

Another interesting question - how aggressive are you guys being with draws? Or are you even playing drawing hands? I just flopped an OESD, didn't hit on the turn, and had to fold to a large bet. I considered check-raising all-in on the flop but that's a big risk for all my chips. It didn't seem too likely he was going to fold for my meager amount of chips - his bet on the flop (which I called) constituted 1/4 of my stack.

Just completed level 1 +$7, off to level 2...

I really don't know. I think in the upper limits full ring may be more appropriate, but in the lower level 6-max games you're going to get loose calls at least, which is what you want.

As for draws, I'd pay very close attention to your stack size, playing them more when you're near the next level's buy-in (so you have slightly more implied odds (and the chance to still turn a profit even if you bust out at the next level))
    If I had a hammer
    I'd drop in the morning
    I'd drop in the evening..

As you could see in my HH I played the first level at 6 max and the others at full ring. I think full ring is the way to go once you get to the higher levels I will try this after i play some SNG's.

Busted on level 2. This is harder than I thought. I was at one point about $1.50 shy of the $40 goal... then it all went to crap. I had a bad hand where I held 89 of diamonds on a 9-high board, all hearts. The other player bet the flop and I raised him, thinking my nines might be good and if not I could rep the flush. He called. He check/called the turn and river, and I couldn't get him to lay down his pocket kings. I maybe should have checked the river, but I thought if he had an overpair that was my last chance to win a hand I'd already built a big pot over. Oh well. After that I was too short-stacked to do a whole lot; when I was down to less than $7, I ended up going all in with T9o in a three way pot, then flopped a double belly-buster, but missed the draw. If I'd hit I would have only been back up to my original buy-in, anyway.

I'm not used to short stack play in cash games, is what I'm learning. I can survive and even thrive in tournaments with a short stack, but in cash games you really have to pick your spots well. One misread or burst of aggression vs. the wrong player, and that's it.

I have returned to fight the noble fight!

    Round 4 - Level 1

Level 1 complete. Complete with AT in the sb. BB min raises, 2 limpers call, I push, BB calls with A4 MHIG.

Level 2 complete. Was down to 10 bucks but I doubled through with A9o vrs A3o and I limp-raise AI preflop. Then Q high flop I go in with Q7 vrs QK and backdoor my straight. I am the luckbox.

Level 3 failed. QQ ran into KK. I hoped on a shorthanded full table hoping my loose fast preflop AIs would be met with some full table disgression.. but he had kings.

lol, nice river for me...Ill try level 3 later today or tomorrow, but with that triple up Ill still be up 8 bucks if I bust. I do this all the time though at 50NL and 100NL and it's been quite profitable for me over the last month. The big stacks at 100NL will call a $20 AI with a coinflip at best most of the time.

    Push on the flop.

If I ever make it to a turn, it's becuase I'm not going to fight over the pot. I might check with a pair of aces if I think it'll induce a turn bet, but that's about it. You dont have enough chips to scare anyone.

If I had $100 or anything close to a full buy-in I would have played the hand differently. I would have raised more PF and pushed or made a large re-raise on the flop, but my whole goal was to turn $18 into $40 ASAP. So I wanted that AK to call that $4 bet on an inside straight draw and I know I certainly wanted that J-10 to stay. If I had raised more pre-flop I wouldn't have minded taking down that pot after the flop. I was going AI at some point so I wanted as much money in the pot as possible before I pushed. The way he was playing I know the AK would have folded to a push post-flop and possibly the J-10 also.

Round 5, Level 1. Passed easily. Only hand of note was 44 v 22 AI preflop.

Some thoughts: If you play at tighter tables, you can steal blinds very easily. It's easy to show a nice profit compared to your starting stack becuase ops are so loose with their blinds at 6max that you can pray on this easily.

I'm still gonna win this challenge.

Im back at it! Level 2!

Done, QJ makes top pair and gets sucked out by T3. I failed to raise the flop becuase I wanted to secure his turn bet before a push.

Tried this a few times today. Ended up down about $5. Never made it past level 3, which I found slightly disturbing considering how long I spent playing NL ring short stack exclusively.

    Some highlights:
JJ called a min-raise @ a full table (since no one was folding anyway), only to flop quads. $50+ pot pushing me way up to level 2. Actually, this prompts the question: If you made enough to skip a level, do you do so?

Most signficant loss: AKo v A9s. He called my big preflop bet, and then hit the flush, which I also hit on the turn.

A modification I'm making: Instead of moving up when I hit the min buyin for the next level, I'm going to make it my plan to hit 22BB (ensuring a profit of 2BB per level).
    I run a training site...

Well at least this challenge highlights why bankroll management is so important as this is effectively the worst thing you can do in terms of bankroll mangement.
It's like a huge spread bet saying i can win 20 coinflips, each of which is for my whole stack and some of which i'll be dominated in, i'll be surprised if anyone manages this. I guess Rilla has the best chance as he knows how to play at 600NL

I don't see how this is true. If you're planning on coinflipping your way through this, then you will fail. That's the same with regular ring though - if you're planning on coinflipping every chance you get, well, you're gonna go bust a lot.

ok, after 4 failed attempts at the first level, I'm up to $40 and the $200 NL table. been doing this on 6 max, and have had a little overage to keep. I think if I get up to $80 here, i'm stopping though, and keeping my profit, but maybe i'll try again in a few days, just to see how it goes. this is fun!

    Hahaha!

I'm glad this is getting a good response, I've won level 1 four times now, pulled out 3 times to play MTTs, played level 2 once and lost sillily.

I'll try it again a few times now that I am back in the country.

does this all have to be done in a row? or can it be broken up? (i.e. getting past the first 2 levels, then finishing later)

i made one attempt and busted out at level 1
know the enemy and know yourself, and in 100 battles you will never be in peril.

know yourself but ignorant of the enemy, your chances of winning are half.

if ignorant of yourself and of your enemy and you will always be in danger.

    Rules

Do you have to sit at one table until you have either busted out or made enough to move up? I.e. - once I accept this challenge and get to the 2/4 table can I leave the table if I get up to say $110 and then try and win my $10 to get to the next level at a different 2/4 table?

I busted out after my second hand on level 1 when my straight on the turn against 2 pair got oofed on the river and turned the villains two pair into a boat.

2nd attempt and 8 hands later I'm at level two. 13 hands later at level 3. Unfortunately I am in limbo right now because this was on Paradise and the server kept crashing. I am at $59.25 at level 3 and will buy in with this amount when I next try to conquer this challenge.

Im conviced this is +ev through atleast the first 2 levels.

By just picking passive preflop tables, you can choose when to gamble after the flop which chops up a lot of variance.

Nice one Jeff, now who was it saying you wouldn't have to win a bunch of coinflips even when dominated occasionally?

    himself fucker.
The KQ hand was the best. We were yelling at him to push and he's like "Oh, ok." and then immediately realized it was a horrible push and that he has to hope op has 99-JJ and not any other raising hand.

JT was also key since the guy who lost the hand followed Jeff to tell him "J 10 OFF SUIT!" just as Jeff tables AA to win that level and reply "A A OFF SUIT"

The TT when the 6k stack raises everyone's like "He's drawing to 2 outs, omg!" then after he shows AK everyone says "Teh, that was clearly an AK raise."

    g00t times.

Maybe it was the karma that did it This little challenge has to be +EV. Also, I didn't really do too many stupid things, like go allin randomly and stuff. I did just camp for my hands and do well.

I actually netted $1200 on this thing and not $1k, a couple of the pots won me past the original buy-in. I do think its funny that a LHE player won this thing first, and I know nothing at all about NL strategy.

I did say after I pushed with KQo "OMG, KQ is such a bad hand" And when I was called with my JT I thought I was a gonner too. The other hands played themselves, once I got past the 100 NL games I feel it was a lot easier, I was having a hard time trying to get to $80.

I just noticed this challenge and I am gonna try this. I dont like playing short stacked but I will take this as a good practise.

    and Congratulations to Jeff!!

EDIT: Level 1 completed with first try. One key hand, AJ on SB. flopped top 2, bet the pot on flop, got one caller, AI which was the size of the pot on turn and he called with A5. Also stole some blinds, going AI on SB when folded in nl50 is fun!
