I cant believe how this table played. raising 3bb and getting 6 (six) callers!!! Some of the big stacks were really loose!!
    Finished level 4 with $320.

I actually think I will play at this table for a while, some of the guys seem to be tilting..

Longtime lurker - First registered post here.

Yes. This is a great a fun idea. Also fun to do with S&Gs.

I was also inspired by reading heeb's roll-up progress (and demise!) @ NWP over the years.

So, I'm giving this one a whirl. All at PS.

Also - I'm trying the 9 seat S&G from $5.50 to the highest limit and then a HU S&G step challenge.

Anyways.. Easy start so far, but need to take a break:

Hahaha.. Epic bad play all around from beginning to end. BUT I WAS ONLY 7 DOLLARS FROM THE NEXT STEP !!!!

Oh well.. I'll give it a shot again. I totally pushed the envelope playing mega-aggro.. It was only a matter of time that someone called me on my BS, they let me get away with it to almost double

Crap.. A few more steals or a hand and I was headed to 2/4!!

Anyways - I think I found my new 10$ therapy session!!!

now looking at that, If I'd had AI pre and taken it down, I'd have made next level

    double sad

First of all congrats everyone else and good luck in the future. Keep up the good work - lets see some more winners!

I don't know if I have the right to post in this topic but I decided to play a similar NL challenge which is starting from 25NL full buyin and moving up every double up. The idea is right off of you guys' thing but it just gives me more room to maneuver so maybe its considered cheating - I dunno but its not a cakewalk either because of the 1 rule.

My only rule is to play and raise almost every hand and show every single bluff whether its a cont. bet, a raise, or any other bet. I'm talking about raising J3o in EP and showing it off every time. Last night I tilted and lost a good amount of money, so today I was just screwing around and it has been very therapeutic.

Anyways, I thought it would be difficult to play like this at 25NL but they folded like chumps every time I had nothing while paying off all my real hands. 50NL lasted for 5 minutes which made it good for $949/hour . 100NL lasted for 38 minutes and now its off to 200NL. Its going to be much more difficult to act like this when moving up to scary amounts of money so I'm not going to slow down intentionally, but it might happen. Its a net profit of $201 after putting in $25 an hour ago so its still fun. I'm sure its developing horrible habits but fuck it.

If anyone else has a problem getting checkraised I have found the a simple cure-all. Call the raise and bet a little over half the pot on the turn. This will be a pretty big bet and they'll fold most of the time. Don't forget to show your hand after doing this! The other problem is wondering if your 2pair is good after being checkraised allin by an unbeliever - only having 1 buy in makes it a hard decision.

So here's to running good and bluffing profitably.

Good luck again to everyone else.

Its crazy. For example look how close I came to destruction because of my ways:

    Hand History:

    Texas Hold'em $2-$2 NL (real money), #1,207,854,562
    Table animaldoctor's HE, 26 Aug 2005 11:27 PM ET
Seat 1: SlappinYaUp ($161 in chips)
    Seat 3: shell312 ($75.50 in chips)
    Seat 4: DoubleA21 ($182.50 in chips)
Seat 8: hamido ($487.75 in chips)
    ANTES/BLINDS
hamido posts blind ($1), SlappinYaUp posts blind ($2).

    SlappinYaUp shows [ KD,KC ]

    PRE-FLOP
    shell312 folds, DoubleA21 bets $5, hamido bets $7, SlappinYaUp bets $102, DoubleA21 folds, hamido calls $96.

    FLOP [board cards 10H,6D,JD ]
hamido bets $20, SlappinYaUp bets $57 and is all-in, hamido calls $37.

    TURN [board cards 10H,6D,JD,AD ]

    RIVER [board cards 10H,6D,JD,AD,KS ]

    SHOWDOWN
    SlappinYaUp shows [ KD,KC ]
    hamido shows [ AH,3H ]
    SlappinYaUp wins $325.
    SUMMARY
    Dealer: DoubleA21
    Pot: $327, (including rake: $2)
    SlappinYaUp, bets $161, collects $325, net $164
    shell312, loses $0
    DoubleA21, loses $5
    hamido, loses $161

    Net: + $427.72

This sure does get scarier faster sitting in at $400NL. I dunno how much more I can take...

edit - ok ok I cant be laggy at 400nl.

I'm on the final level. I've gotta say, this is pretty nerveracking for my BR. It's now 2600, but I need to deposit $400 into the next level. Here's the HH from 5/10 tonight - I'll post the rest when I'm on the other computer with the saved hand histories.

I got blinded down to $125, with not one decent hand at all for about 30 hands.

Lyric had raised with mediocre hands, and figured QKs is a good enough hand to make a stand. The cold call worried me, but my hand got stronger after every street, eventually turning into an unneeded runner runner flush.

I put him on AJ-AK or some PP, and with the flush draw + 6 outs for pair on the turn, I had good odds. I checked on the river, hoping he'd bet, then I would raise all in.

So many draws on the board, I didn't want to get sucked out on for my stack here, so I bet pot. I also didn't raise preflop because I thought it would put me in an awkward situation postflop with nuts69, who played loose and would call with bottom pair as often as top pair. On a flop of 49K for example, if I bet and he calls, I am left clueless and with only $200~ left.

    About time!
  23. #98
i just beat the first 2 levels. 200nl+ later!
  24. #99
had a good run with this, got up to $400 NL on Bodog, then went all in with TT, called by AT and they spiked an ace. oh well, I sill made $60 in overages between limits, which is nice. I am definetly going to have to try this again, I really think I can beat this. the only problem is that bodog doesn't have $10/$20, so I couldn't do the whole thing, but still.
  25. #100
    Hi folks,

nice thing to try... I only play 6max, that makes it a bit harder I guess. Well, I got to the 200 on Party, the levels below being quite easy mostly due to good cards. On 200NL it was crazy. First hand I double up, going all-in with pocket 8s agains a button raise in the BB... catch 2 eights to make quads against his KK !! Just a couple of hands later I got destacked by the same guy, holding the Ace-high flush against his boat... so didn't really make a substantial plus, but had lots of fun
  26. #101
Ohh, I'll try it, I need a break from normal play anyway...

    I'll edit to update here
    Step 1: $10 -> $31.40
    Step 2: $20 -> ??

duh! you should always call 1/6th of your stack with K5h, its quite obvious youll hit the flush at least 1/2 of the time :P

Well yes, elanto, but this isn't proper poker, it's a laugh, an experiment. I just wanted a king-high flush because the big stacks would have all happily put me all in and allowed me to qualify for the next level.

it may be sort of a joke, but to win you have to play semi decenty poker IMO

Obviously you have to play decent poker, but I was early enough in the sequenece to take a risk, I took it, and I got a big slice of the LUCK that we all accept will be needed to win the challenge. I promise I'll play better at the next level.

    So you mamanged it, elipsesjeff?

Yeah, he sucked out in such a painful way (I had 0.6% chance of winning that after the flop). I'd have folded like a shot on the flop if he'd raised (my bet was a simple steal attempt), and again, if he'd raised my bet on the turn I'd have been hard pressed to stay in the hand. He only showed explicit strength after I'd made the nuts (I guess he could have had quad threes) and by that point, I was delighted to see his big bet.

I have a feeling, though, that I can't necessarily rely on the kind of luck I've had in the two hands above at the next level up. Though it's pretty clear I can't rely on skill either, so maybe it's all I've got

Okay, level 4 complete (I'm wondering if it's against the spirit of the thing to do the levels separately but that's how it's worked out), also at Empire. Here are the two key hands.

Please note btw that I do realise these are Not Very Good hands - I am taking advantage of the fact that decent players respect bets, especially from unknowns like me (unless any of them hang out at William Hill £25NL).

wow IMO on the second hand you should have raise, pushing just achieves one thing, worst hands fold and only hands that beat you will call, a raise would have accomplished the smae thing

Elanto, the thing is that all I wanted was this pot, as it qualified me for the next level, so getting him to fold was fine. I certainly didn't want him to call me to the river with A3o, even if I could have ended up with a bigger payoff. And at these levels, as a short stack, you can bet that he'd have taken a lot of my stack if he'd made a good hand.

So I went for the blunt instrument combined with the fact that, after only about 25 hands, I doubted the table had any solid reads on me. Unless he'd had a set or top two pair I thought a fold was almost inevitable, but that's all I needed.

I guess this challenge is demonstrating that the skills (+ a huge amount of luck, as I've needed and got up to now) needed to dobule up from short stack are quite far removed from those needed to play consistently good poker at a decent level. It feels more like short stack tourney play than considered ring work.
  43. #118
I'm starting this challenge with the $41.75 I have left in my Interpoker bankroll. I have to do something as they take money from your account every month if you're inactive after 3 months and I'm way underbankrolled for their smallest game ($25). Unfortunately after losing all my worldly possessions to Katrina including my computer aka all the notes on Poker I have ever kept I won't play as well as I normally would. Time to have some fun

Does anyone play AK preflop differently or do you all raise with a min buyin or higher stack and check-fold postflop and limp-reraise all in/Push preflop with a smaller than min buyin stack?

Excellent thread guys, only wish I could spare the dollar to try myself but it would be a stretch on the old bankroll. And I'm quite certain I'd brick it and run soon's I broke $100.

I won $2 from dwarfman today for correctly guessing his middle name. I figure the least I can do is give this a shot, since he's subsidizing 20% of my initial buy in. Will keep you posted.

Busted at 1/2 when my opp slowplayed trips...but I'm still up because I came out of .50/1 with $53. That's fun! I'm playing full ring to keep the blinds down. I like the discipline you need to have. Camping for monsters...

I'm going to try it again tomorrow.

wow i honestly thought know-one would complete this and it would be -EV to try and go the whole stretch. Congrats!

    I'll give it a shot.

First level completed with no problems. The table was sooooooo bad. All had full stacks and it was common that there would be 8x BB raises with AJ and calls with any two faces. My big hand was AK vs A3s. Flopped trip kings. Slowplayed and this fish called an AI with Ace high.

I'll give level 2 a try later and keep you updated.

arrrgh...I got frustrated and quit with $30 at level 2. I won 10 bucks quick then just hovered between $25 and $35 for around an hour...table was too tight and I was hungry. I had soooo many chances but the big stacks just wouldn't bite. Does this DQ me or can rebuy at level 2? I really want to do this.
