Because you love me, right? The future looks dim for any useful or enlightening poker content in this here courtie blog, but hey, if you keep checking back, maybe I'll surprise you one day

(Take two for this thread, since the recently failed hard disk deleted the old thread and my two entries.)

I have a suggestion for "this here courtie blog!"

Write down some long-termish goals. Where do you want to be in 5-6 months with poker, or even life? That would make for an interesting read, and it would benefit you immensely as a player.

It would be cool to see what you're shooting for. We could also yell at you and tell you to aim higher.

Thanks for the suggestion, I think I will take it and write something out when I get a chance. I'm not sure what goals I have when it comes to poker, so it's probably a good thing to think about. I'm randomly playing random games on random sites with randomly obtained money, not the best way to go abouts becoming a player.

Problem is that I don't have much time to play anymore I guess that makes it an even better challenge

    P.S. Nice sig, lol

Ahh... the ol' "I was drunk and calling everyone, but for some reason I didn't have your number..." line. That's a classic 'rilla. If you happen to get it, IM it to me and I'll give you $5. If it works and she actually talks to me I'll give you $6.

The scary thing is he has my fiance's number now....I don't know what I was thinking when I gave that to him. I really do fear for her overall safety.

My number is only worth $6 to you?

Okay Rilla, fair trade. Number for number! And half of Nuts' money (I could buy a lot with that $3).

I won't deny the fact that it's a pyramid, but it's competely legit AND it gives you a chance to still make some pretty decent cash. I see it as a very low risk way to get management experience in, that's the main reason I'm doing it. If you're semi-intelligent and willing to work your ass off, you'll probably make a LOT of money. Note the semi-intelligent requirement though We'll see, I'll let you know how it goes. I'm aiming to make 24k this summer, we'll see if I can do it.

We have $3,000,000 Liability Insurance Coverage in case of an accident. This is also expensive, but it is essential for the protection of you, the customer. Many contractors do not have this coverage.
Time for some good ole collusion! Let's say I fly to B.C. and take a paint bucket to the head and divy up the insurance yes?

Way to not understand the policy The insurance is for the client's property. If my employees damage the property in any way (accidentally), the insurance covers it AFTER I pay a $1000 deductible. Yay. If you get hit in the head, I'm pretty sure you just go to the hospital. Actually maybe not. Now that you mention it, maybe I don't understand the policy either ...

Anyways. The site needs to be updated ... it's now $4,000,000

    Hahaha. Sigh.

Both. I have no problem giving them half of my profits because they are showing me how to run this show in the first place. They make money when I make money. And they show me how to make money in the first place.

I dunno, maybe I'm looking at it the wrong way. But in the end, as long as I make a lot of money, I don't really care how much they make.

Good luck on your MTT endeavor. If you can afoord it I would stay away from the the $3 and lower MTTs on Stars however. I would try the $5 and $10 tourneys if you can. Playing lower is not much different than playing in freerolls. Not that the competition is that much better, but the play is a little more sane and it makes the pay outs much, much better if you happen to advance far.

Thanks DNuts. And good point. 100 buyins for MTTs, is that right? I'll give the $5.50s a shot, thanks for the thought.

I'll get this out of the way quickly, but I just thought you should know that I think your blog is great. It is well written and I enjoy reading it.

Anyway, that's not why I came to this thread....I came here to talk about your "problem" that you discussed in your latest blog post. Youre "problem" that you have? You're a Bankroll Baby.

    Courtie, welcome to my world.

I'm not sure if you've gone back and read many of my blog posts, but I've discussed being a Bankroll Baby a time or two. I've talked about how I played NL25 until I had a BR of over 3k....and about how I didn't make the jump to NL100, full-time, until I had about 6k behind me (I skipped NL50 almost entirely for various reasons). I just recently switched to NL100 6-max, but as of right now I'm still sitting here with over 100 buy-ins behind me at this level. Just one month ago I was playing NL100 (6-max and full-ring) with 130+ buy-ins behind me (I just dipped into the BR to buy two dope-ass monitors and paid of some other bills).

Insane? Some think so. (EDIT: I plan on making a jump up to NL200 soon, though, my excuse now is that I'm learning a new game, 6-max, which is a valid excuse I think)

Anyway, I've talked about my "problem" at great length...but the more I think about it, the more I am starting to believe that it actually isn't a problem at all. It's one of those "it is.....but it isn't" sort of things.

Poker attracts many different types of players. The extremes are those people that play with a reckless abandon, those that pay no attention to bankroll management.....and then you have people like us, those that play with, what some would consider, too much "cushion." The rest, or the majority, fall somewhere in between.

I used to kick myself all the time, much like you are doing, because I wasn't moving up levels fast enough. I thought, and others told me (correctly, as it turns out), that I was missing out on making more money by playing lower stakes. Even with knowing this, and hearing it from others, I still couldn't change the way I felt about my situation.

Why did I feel this way? Why did I move up levels so slowly? Well, for the longest time I couldn't handle "the swings of poker." I couldn't handle losing a few buy-ins at NL25. Each and every time I did I thought it was the end of the world, that my game was going in the shitter, that if I couldn't beat this game 100% of the time then really, how good was I? If I wasn't able to handle losing a buy-in at that level, and realize "that's just poker," then I knew I wasn't ready to move up to NL100.

I was also at a nice comfort level. The money still mattered, the money I was making was great, and really meant something.....to me. I remember hopping into bed after a late-night session and telling my (now) fiance, "I made $60 tonight!" Who woulda thunk it that you could make that type of money doing something you love so much. I almost laugh at that comment now, but jeeze, $50-60 in a night used to be such a HUGE deal...

Over time, with the help of others and by myself, I started to see "the big picture," if you want to call it that. I started to understand that in order to make more money I had to put more on the table. Would I lose more if I lost a buy-in? Of course, but I would also MAKE more money if I could keep a consistent win-rate going too. Getting to this point has increased my profits a LOT.

Slowly, but surely, my thought process has changed...I'm still a Bankroll Baby, don't get me wrong....but I'm getting close to losing that tag for good. I now have goals for when I want to be playing at certain levels which is something I *never* used to do. I used to always say, "I'll move up when I'm ready." Now I *know* I'm ready for NL200, so I'm going...and my game is ready for NL400 and I will be there just as soon as I conquor NL200 for a while.

So, back to my original point. Do I think being a Bankroll Baby is bad? It is.....and it isn't. It is because you're not going to, at least theoretically, maximize your profits by playing over-rolled. Being a BR Baby is a good thing, though, because you're still *learning the game.* You're a newbie at this (much like I was). In the beginning, I was constantly learning, constantly watching all of my tables that are open, constantly processing information that was going to help me 10, 20, 50, 2349, 11,239 hands from then. I knew that at *some point* I was going to move up in levels when I was *ready*.

Poker, to me, is a marathon, and should be treated as such...Go at your own pace. Sooner or later, you'll get used to the money, you'll get used to the swings....and you won't be as much of a BR Baby. Then you'll jump up levels and find out it's not so hard.....and then you'll jump up levels again, and maybe find out the same thing.....You'll be playing higher and higher.

It's not how you get there.....it's just that you get there. I hope to be playing 5/10 or 10/20 some day. Maybe even higher. If it takes me a few years to learn and build a roll, I'm cool with that.

I know I rambled there towards the end....but seriously, don't kick yourself for being a Bankroll Baby. It's natural for people like us, and it's okay. All of those numbers for moving up levels, all those stats that explain how many buy-ins you need for each step....it's all bullshit. They're just numbers. What's good (and safe feeling) for one will not be good (and safe feeling) for another. Some people can't play unless they have their entire BR on the line because it's not a rush for them....others need to play with huge cushions, because the money matters to them at all times.

So my advice? Move up when you're ready, move up when it feels right. You'll know when. You'll love it when you do with the amount of money you'll start raking in...

    Good luck,
    UG

UG, thanks for one of the most thoughtful replies I've received since I've been at FTR. It really means a lot to me.

I can definitely relate to everything you said in your post. And just the fact that you, someone I really respect as a player, understand what I am going through right now ... well, it really makes me feel better. Not in the whole "misery loves company" kind of way (lol), but in the "maybe I'm NOT crazy then" kind of way.

Once again, thanks so much for taking the time. It's little things like this that help newbies like me overcome these certain emotional obstacles in poker. And we all know how important it is to conquer the emotional aspect of this game.

    Great Post George.

Im planning on moving up to 25NL as fast as I can whilst sticking to the 20 buyin rule, but once I get there im going to start being much more conservative.

Im planning on staying at 25NL until I know I can play poker. At the moment im pretty much winning by playing tighter starting requirements. I often have lapses in discipline make make those calls when I know I shouldnt and Im not leaving 25NL until I can fix that

Hopefully ill have fixed it before I even arrive at 25NL though.

I enjoy the candidness of your Blog Courtie.

Discipline is one of the toughest things in life. Balance and discipline tie in together which is why all great people are balanced...they have the discipline to not overlook areas in their life. I constantly work at this....and am still not real good at it, since I like to focus all my attention on one thing at a time and leave other things in the dark. Hope this helps.

    courtie,

Funny you mentioned the "turbo" live MTT you are playing- I just played a kinda similar tourney tonight. Except 2 tables, 10$ buy in (no rake, they do this tourney to get people to come in I think?), 100$ added ... starting 500 chips, blinds go 5/10, 10/20, 20/40, 40/100, 100/200, 200/400 every10 minutes. It's basically a 2 table SnG turbo, with 100$ added to the prize pool, which is a pretty good deal actually! Anyways, the insane blind structure can be tough when your cards are cold, no doubt. Tonight I had an M of 6 when it got down to like 7 ppl, UTG+1 i get AK, which I promptly pushed, called by a loose dude with 22- his 22 holds up- bam. But there are some truly awful players at this thing, so I am going back for sure. You're right, it's different live huh? The thing I have screwed up a couple of times with is stupid string bets (by accident) . Plus calculating stack sizes and pot odds etc, without the little numbers on your screen is a pain! lol... Anyways, rambling here- but I can relate to your experience- and I have a strong feeling you will take that thing down soon! And one more thing, start practicing those lip slurs

LOL DUDE, I do this every single tourney without fail hahahahha. It's sooo bad, the last time I went (I haven't gone for a couple weeks) I did it TWICE I gotta stop doing it, it's terrible lol. One time I tried to raise as a blind steal but I ended up string betting, so I could only call, HAHA. Someone in the blinds decided he wanted to raise after my "call", and since I had been raising with crap, I was like, "oh great." The dealer was like to me, "okay, you can call or raise now," and I was like, "I don't want to anymore" and folded. LOL she was like, wtf ... haha I'm such a retard

I know i've been at the riverrock for too long when they start the early bird tourney and i haven't been to sleep. Only happened once though.

You may be able to break even or win a little in this tourney in the long run, so if you enjoy it, and it helps you with your live play you then go ahead and play it. Also for string bets just make sure you say it before you do anything. Sometimes they are pretty strict, one time i was like 135, and i said it kinda slow and put the 100 in before i said the 35 (cause i was deciding how much over a hundred i wanted to bet) and they called it a string bet. In that spot $35 didn't make much difference but you have to be careful.

Hahaha nice. What stakes do you usually play there? What are the tables like when it gets past 4 am (I've never been there past 4)?

Sometimes they are pretty strict, one time i was like 135, and i said it kinda slow and put the 100 in before i said the 35 (cause i was deciding how much over a hundred i wanted to bet) and they called it a string bet. In that spot $35 didn't make much difference but you have to be careful.
You think it's possible to break even or even win a little? If that's the case, I'll definitely keep playing them then. I'm definitely doing it for fun and experience, but I don't really wanna lose money out of it. So if you think I can break even, that's good enough for me. And good point about the string bets, I really really should get into the habit of verbalizing everything. It's so simple just to say "raise" before I do it, so I don't know why I don't

I play the 5/10nl game there, and 10/20nl when they have it (which is very rare). It gets really dead around 6:30am, then the early bird tourney people and the retirees start showing up.

The journey from $500 to $1000 is seriously infinitely long for me
This has been true for a lot of players.

For some it seems to be some sort of mental thing. I've seen it time and time again where people get fixated on the numbers and can't wait until they crack four-digits. That's all they think about and it consumes them, and they make it a lot harder on themselves to reach their goal.

For you it may be a time issue. Right now you're not able to play very much.

Or, it could be a combination of the two.

    Just something to think about.

Not to make fun of your Canucks...but they need to go 5 for 5 to finish the season in the playoffs...I think all of your spare attention should not go towards willing the Canucks into the playoffs...nice to see someone other than the Oilers in this position. I think you make your 4 digits before the Canucks make the playoffs.

I forgot this thread existed, mostly because FTR decided to stop notifying me of its replies. So! To keep with the trend of replying to all the posts in here (because I'm nice like that ) ...

What you say makes sense. It's strange that the 2nd $500 would take so much longer than the 1st $500, but I can see why it may be. I think you're right in saying that it's probably a combination of a mental and a time thing. At first it was DEFINITELY mental, back when I was having major problems moving up to the $11s. I've been working on it since then (after your very nice bankroll reply to my blog entry, I may add), and it's gotten MUCH better for me. Mentally I'm much better, and I've been playing $11s with a few $22s thrown in lately. I feel like I'm playing decently. So now it's definitely about time, I probably only play 6 to 10 SnGs per week, and that's assuming I play more than one at a time. I really hope that when this month is over I can focus on building up the roll a bit more, and then I'll perhaps get a better idea of whether or not my problem is mostly my game, mental issues, or time issues. But of course, it's probably all three ...

Canucks have depressed me so much the past couple of months. Funny how we were an "elite" team at the start of the season, and now we're not even gonna make the playoffs. Injuries after the olympic break killed us, as well as lack of scoring from our so called first line. I don't really want the Oilers to miss the playoffs, but them missing is the only way the Nucks get in. Stupid hockey

I don't have time to play right now, my 1k roll is gonna sit in Stars and do nothing for at least two months. But when I have some time, I am going to play. A lot. And I am going to learn how to kick ass. I really want to, almost more than anything. I love this game.
    awesome

Anyway, this is getting kinda lame I need to be up in 5 hours and I have a stack of paperwork still.
    lame

But seriously ... thanks. To everyone who's ever taken even a minute of their time to help me out along the way.
    not a problem

$1k is kinda cool, it's a lot of money to me. I thought I'd never break it, and it feels great to finally do so. Thank you FTR, for my first 1k and for any future millions I make (because I damn well plan on making several more).

    Hello CBee!

Just a thanks for the message (and marginal telling off) about not getting disheartened. I played a $22 yesterday and crushed it. Although, picking up 4 sets in the first 20 hands helped!!

    Happy Anniversary btw!

Oh, and I would volunteer for the job you're offering, but I got pissed off commuting into central London (which is only 10 miles away), so I think Vancouver might be a bit much.

I just came accross this post, I know its old, but I hope you didnt actually do this paint management thing...

my cousin did this last summer and got scammed out of about $7,000.

Around $4,000 of this was his own hard earned money, and the other $3,000 was money he owed his crew. I cant remember exactly why they wouldnt give him the $$, but he was pissed, and his dad, who is a lawyer, took those people to court and ended up sewing their asses off.

Anyway, everything got worked out eventually (5 months later), but the hassle isnt worth it.

You're definitely right in saying that they can screw you over pretty nicely ... I really hope it doesn't come to that for me. Haha but yeah, I am doing it right now as we speak, no way I can get out of it. It's definitely stressful and every day I wish I hadn't gotten into it, but it's too late ... so ... just trying to stay alive. I'll let you know how it goes in 3 months when it's all over

    Yo Court!

Congrats on moneyeyeyeyeyeying on the stars $215 tonight. It's good to hear that you haven't been destroyed by the painting industry yet (and something tells me that this morning's rain screwed up your plans anyways ).

On your little blog entry - it's a call. You are only truly pwned by AA, kinda hooped against KK and have more than a 40% chance against everything else, which is what the pot is giving you in terms of odds (in fact, assuming that all As are live, you actually have a decent shot against KK).

J! Wow you still come here?

Not dead due to painting yet, although I've come close a couple times One more month of torture and then it's over, yay! Today's rain was VERY strange though. I'm sure it was enough to totally drench all my painting supplies on all my job sites

We still need to play poker sometime. I will have a life again soon I hope???

I cashed the tourney last weekend. Seems like so long ago now that I think about it. And regarding that AK hand ... yes, I agree. And yes, I regret not calling That's what happens when you're playing way out of your roll ...
