    Default 2013.

here begins a record of my poker journey through 2013

    currently i'm playing:
poker stars - 25nl and 50nl off an ok roll. Supernova for now.
full tilt poker - clearing bonuses and playing up to 50nl while clearing ring game tickets (stakes capped due to ticket value and ticket-management). Diamond edge that won't expire until November
party - pretty much nada, small roll sitting there for if/when i feel the urge

    currently i'm paying:
    off my mortgage

    currently i'm living:
in dunedin, new zealand, trying to recover from a reasonably serious lower back injury in november. Hoping to make the startline for a 26km mountain race in april. In the meantime i'm hanging out in my garden...

    currently i'm loving:
life, it's grand. I'm in a good space. Healthy, fit (injury notwithstanding), good friends, good places, great things to look forward to this year.

    currently i'm enjoying thinking about:
my poker journey until now (linked below) and where it is headed. among other things

    2011 and 2012
    2010-trainwreck
a 10k hands in one day winrate prop thread

first few months as a pro - featuring 200nl disaster-a-ments

started getting serious - featuring self indulgent autobiography

way back when, getting comfortable leaving the micros

    where it all began

    cheers all

poker thus far in 2013 has had some solid volume, some silly variance, and some standard spots. FTP bonus is clearing. Stars stellars are clearing. Poker balances are doing something. I should be able to afford to eat this month...

rehab is going great, my girlfriend drove into town for work today and i walked home after i'd spent enough time reading caffeine. Walked over 5km without any pain or any problems. That's pretty fucking awesome. I've been organising a friend's stag party for a couple of weeks from now. A bunch of us are heading off to some smalltown nz place where i've rented a few cabins within stumbling distance of a rural bar. First arvo we'll go and play a 9 hole $5 green fee golf course, then hit food/drink/stag stuff. Next day there is talk of another golf course, but who knows. Good news is that based on today I might actually be a starter for the golf! stoked.

I started my first wine brew of the year today. A ginger wine (in the Stones ginger wine style I hope). I'm interested in how it will turn out as I've never brewed a ginger wine before. I'm sticking to a 5 litre batch cos it's pretty experimental.

Garden is thriving. Cucumbers, peas, potatoes, radishes, japanese turnips, kale, mizuna, zucchini, and herbs are all in harvest/eating mode. Tomatoes and zucchini are close to joining that fray. Stoked that i've managed to convert a big chunk of lawn into that much food in my first year of owning this house.

Bees are doing what bees do, time to add another honey box pronto before they run out of space.
bees in my garden, making me honey

I think i'm recovered enough to build a fence sometime later this week, then build a chicken coop. It was on the November to-do list, but got bumped when i broke my arse. Then I'll track down some chickens and hopefully be eating eggs from the garden too before autumn rolls around.

so many good lives out there bro. None of us who post on this forum should really be complaining about ours - we're all educated and not destitute = we have opportunities. Maybe you should have done more/less (choose which best applies) coke though

how else could i afford to live off poker re cost of living in NZ - it's full of inconsistencies. Outdoor recreation is incredibly accessible and cheap. Golf is crazy, we have hundreds of golf courses - like, one for pretty much every town of over 500 people - and standards obviously vary. Green fees are crazy low by world standards, golfing holidays through NZ are a great idea for anyone who is into golf. It's only a few minutes walk for me to the tee of the 9th hole of this course, casual green fees are $30, $20 if you get a multi-trip pass. There are a bunch of courses that are club run and where there are no fulltime employees. Some of them are even set in kinda farm situations, meaning electric fences around the greens to keep out the sheep. If your entertainment is mostly technology based then you've got problems though, most electronics retail at about 50% above their cost in north america. And if your entertainment is buying houses... we have one of the worst housing affordability indices (median salary vs median house cost) in the western world.
As an aside to this, I still don't understand why poker refugees seeking haven outside the USA headed to Asia instead of NZ or Australia.

I had a close look at this today, 5 days since i started the brew. It's a seething, bubbling mess of optimism. Specific gravity has dropped from 1.110 to 1.060 so it's at about 8% alcohol by volume right now and tastes incredible - it could do well as low alcohol dessert wine already. I have high hopes for how it is going to end up!

Held a dinner party for 10 people on Friday evening, after taking two days off poker cos breaks are good when the sun is shining. The garden isn't at the point of providing all food yet, but it's started. Once my back is fully recovered i'll be going fishing some too so there are a few fully hunted/grown meals to look forward too later this summer and into autumn. Especially once i get some beer and wine bottled!

    some photos
1 = potatoes freshly dug from the garden
2 = some point during dinner food prep, everything is from the garden = fresh lettuce of various types, parsley, thyme, potatoes, radishes, chives. Nice.

Daven, whilst I admit I play up a bit when discussing recreational drug use and definitely have some experience with many of the options available, I've never really been too much of a waster and certainly never made a habit of coke. I guess my weed and mdma use was pretty high for a few years but everything else was just random social use which I never do anymore.

This is the first time I've ever tried to play down my drug use. I must be maturing.

huh, party, it's been a LONG time since i've played any serious volume there. I'll take a look.

Full tilt poker is interesting at the moment. Rush died for a while, there were two of us bought in and we played a few hundred hands of HU hoping for it get up and running again. Pretty funny watching us be re-seated each hand even though it was HU.

for sure. Flick me a pm re dates and flights Also, i'm living with an academic from toronto at the moment and he wondered if i knew some poker player called sorel who he went to school with cos he buys into the small world buzz.

a cheaper option on the garden front is that you could plan exactly what you want done in your backyard then employ a few students for a few hours to get it done. I didn't go down that road cos busto and mostly cos i really enjoy doing it myself. Provide a case of beer in addition to the hourly cos gardening can be thirsty work. You'd probably want to be in there doing it too though, stop them chopping down the wrong tree or cutting a water main or whatever.

stag party was heaps of fun.
I haven't played much poker over the last week.
Time to get some grind on.
    life is summery

I'm kinda glad that i don't have bonuses to clear on FTP now (all finished). Feels like I haven't won a flip there yet, and they won't let me do HU flips with $200 ring game tickets to insta-clear them at 97% either. Bastards. I have bought a few tickets and withdrawn quite a few $$ while slowly clearing/destroying said tickets. If anyone wants any info on best way to use tickets then either ask in this thread or flick me a pm. I've thought about it a lot, and made some errors over the first few days i used them.

January was pretty arse on the poker front. I only withdrew $2k but I still didn't grow my online roll very much...

Today I'll grind a whole bunch and then have a chilled out evening. Saturday morning and I'll be heading off to Queenstown with my girlfriend for a night in a tent and some time outside and away from Dunedin. Saturday arvo we'll meet up with a bunch of friends who are arriving from around the place and everyone else will climb while i drink beer and yell words of encouragement (along the lines of 'come on useless, pretend you don't suck!!'). Sunday morning i'll go hunt some trout while the others climb and then it's back to dunedin. Hopefully Monday I'll be cooking a big feast of fresh fish for a few friends.. It's going to be a short trip, but i'm psyched on getting out of town for a couple of days and hanging out next to a lake surrounded by mountains.

I posted some pics from my new years trip elsewhere, i'm copying them here just cos:

Fingers crossed. I can finally do a chinup without pain (been testing that every fortnight) so at least I can do some training i guess. The ticklist of routes and boulders for summer that i wrote back in early November isn't going to be seeing too much ticking. Well, not until late Autumn/winter anyway...

4 - moving from a weird sloper to a smallish two finger sloping crimp. Standard stuff. V-moderately hard.
5 - settling a beer bet. Turns out that this V5 isn't that much harder barefoot... crux is the move to the pocket he's on now, second almost crux is the throw he's about to make

so only a couple of weeks ago i was off drinking for a friend's stag-do. The weekend just gone i got to dress up fancy and do whatever it is that groomsmen do = pose for photos, drink loads, not lose rings, make sure the bride and groom head bedwards together at some stage. And we didn't fuck it up. Awesome weekend at a beautiful spot. Friday we headed up early and had a huge feast hosted by the venue, saturday was a chill morning (well, for most. I went fishing and caught trout cos everyone likes fresh trout). Then a few of us met up with the groom and the photographer and started drinking whiskey at around noon. And then cocktails from 5pm, then ceremony, then party. Hellah good times.

wine in photo below: left to right = elderflower (harvested from just down the road), blackcurrant (picked from a friend's garden), stones ginger imitation. The ginger wine is about 16% alcohol by volume right now and it's pretty dry. Very drinkable already only five weeks since i started it off..., i'll rack in a little sugar tomorrow then let it sit a week or two and then see how patient i can be. I think i'll start a 20 litre batch of ginger wine sometime this month. My girlfriend and i picked a whole bunch of wild mirabella (yellow) plums on the way back from the wedding on sunday and i guess that means i'll be trying to make a plum wine next...

as for poker. Well, haven't really played that much in February and running kinda arse. So i'll be putting in some volume over the next couple of weeks.

haven't felt much like playing poker this month, and running pretty bad when i have played. Hovering around breakeven over 20hrs so far in february.

good news is that a couple of days ago i managed my first run of over 1km since breaking my arse back in november. It was a very short run and i was slow and unfit after three months of sedentary lifestyle - but i got through it without pain. Only way is up...

gidday nash, it's been a while.

fuck it, i should probably clear some $$ this month so that i don't destroy my bankroll via withdrawals. But i basically have no desire to sit at cash-game tables at the moment. I've got quite a few FTP points left (after a short email exchange i ended up not losing as many points as i could have via the ring game tickets debacle) but i don't really feel it's optimal to grind cash games on FTP for the moment. So buying and clearing bonuses makes no sense. It also doesn't feel that smart to leave all those points just sitting there either, i mean, insurance is all good and etc, but, meh, fuck it, cash is better.

so, where does that leave things?

well - hello turbo sngs! A few years since these were that juicy, but whatever. It's a quick way to turn points -> $$ and even if i just run breakeven at the sngs it should result in a pretty good hourly.

As an aside, a guy i talk poker with on skype occasionally and who i played with a LOT on FTP 2-4 handed across a few stakes, and against whom i played about 15k cash hands over the last few months binked a little tourney for solid five figures a couple of days ago. And, fuck it, i'm gonna chase the tourney score dream too. Watch out double deuce, watch out... dunno, i'll have to look at the tourney schedules to see what i'll end up playing. Hopefully it will at least result in some long cash game sessions most likely it will fuck with my head. In my tiny exploration of turbo-sngs on FTP today i managed outbursts of expletives at about three minute intervals. And laughed a lot. It's the awesome, i'm probably gonna become a losing gambling turbo-sng addict and need to sell my house to feed the habit. But, until then....

^ just re-read my post, and i wonder how much longer i'll be doing the pro-poker gig. It's been a while now. May 2008 and i reduced my work to 18hrs/week for a year, may 2009 and i switched to poker completely. Wow. Almost four years. I know that a lot can be said about my poker incompetence and lack of motivation or failure at mid-stakes or whatever, but at the same time i'm a little bit proud of the fact that i have supported myself in a comfortable lifestyle involving quite a bit of travel and adventure all via playing the occasional hour or two of cards on the internet. Fuck. Four years. Ridiculous. And kinda cool. Life is a wonderful thing.

And reading. I'm re-reading Once Were Warriors for the first time since seeing the movie years ago. And it's as hard and beautiful as it ever was. Want an insight into despair and the underbelly and life - then read it. Otherwise, simply watch the movie. Also highly recommended. And then dwell on the fact that Jake was the hero in the eyes of many who viewed it, and that ' -the-muss' became a title that was as coveted as a belt, but with more deadly consequences..

Sounds like the break from cash is proving beneficial and you've certainly done well to be doing this for a living for so long - I've always thought it must be difficult to motivate yourself being self-employed or working from home, but I guess paying the mortgage and some trips abroad is motivation enough!

I've got about 15k FTPs (small beer I know) - do you think the Turbo SNGs are the most efficient way to turn this into cash? Or maybe rat-hole a couple of 25nl tickets? My original plan was to use these for my first shot at 50nl, but I'm quickly going off that idea.

Bean, if you're already comfortable at 25nl I'd use the tickets to try out 50nl. They play pretty similar and with a little luck the cash tickets could be your ticket to moving up earlier than you thought.

don't buy cash-game tickets that are worth less than at least 200bb for the games you want to play. You can't reload them, nor reload your stack from your roll at tables you bought into with a ring game ticket. You could perhaps buy a couple of $25 tickets and rathole 10nl, but i don't think this is a great idea vs the alternatives.

basically, you want to turn points into cash quickly. Your points will get you fourteen $5 sng tickets. Assuming you are breakeven and run as expected then you quickly turn these into $70 and you can move on with your life. Or you could use them to play a few $10-$30 buyin mtts and hope for material amounts of $$. Depends on your gamble.

Ya the ring game tickets were frustrating to say the least. I did manage to turn them over to some decent returns but I think I could have done a lot better. Playing half stacked sometimes was frustrating as hell

Thanks for the advice as usual daven.

The STTs definitely seem like a good idea with the short time requirement and I managed to rattle off 13 of these in a couple of hours this evening. The standard doesn't seem good either and should be easily beatable in the long run.

The SNGs can be really tilting when you run like aids over a small sample though (hi!).

ja, think they're the best option if you want to convert FTP points -> cash but don't want to grind there longterm.
I've played about 40 now, and running above breakeven so the points are actually becoming dollars. I've played the occasional micro tourney at the same time. Managed to get deepish in one tourney, but meh and busted in like 30th of 1200 or something for a couple of bucks an hour...

outside of poker i've been doing some fishing and some eating and some drinking.
Photo below is of a few perch i had caught a couple of hours earlier and a whole bunch of vegetables i then picked from the garden. Good foundation for what ended up a tasty meal, well complemented by the homebrew beer.

Tuesday arvo i drove some dirt roads to a lake in the mountains where i caught a few fish and camped under the stars after eating trout and salad for dinner. Wednesday i fished a few streams basically exploring my way back home. Stunning way to spend 24 hours of my life. Tomorrow morning i'm heading away on my first climbing trip since i broke my arse back in november - looking forward to seeing how that feels. And then it's all on for some poker study and grind cos i feel inspired to do so.

i've played quite a few 9 and 6 player stts the last few days clearing some FTP points -> cash. It's been a perverse kind of fun and i'm finally starting to learn some sng skills - still ahead of breakeven thus far, should probably to some work with sng wiz or something though

i went climbing at the weekend. Only on a toprope, and nothing particularly hard - but fuck yeah! this month i start swimming and hopefully manage to up the distance running along the beach. Three months into recovery and at least i've made some progress. Pro-tip. Don't break your arse. Ez game.

today i went to the pool and did some aqua-jogging (250metres) and swimming (about 1km) cos my physio said my body is recovered to the point where that is appropriate rehab. I took it nice and slow and it was pretty relaxing, although aqua-jogging is kinda frustrating. Now i'm a little muscle sore, but that seems to be all = i'm fine with that!

Yesterday i finished my sng grind on full tilt - mostly cos i'm sick of sngs and associated dodgy goings-on. I've kept 100k FTP points and $150 sitting there in reserve, but for now it's back to cash games. Had my first cash session on stars for what feels like quite a while and i am happy with how i played. I anticipate playing quite a few hours the next three weeks, plus swimming pretty much every single day.

This evening i'm meeting with a reporter to talk about some food project we've managed to get moving. Basically linking up people who are unable to harvest their prolifically fruiting apple/pear/plum trees with a bunch of people who are happy to volunteer to pick the fruit. Then we've got a mixture of things going on. The owner of the tree gets to keep as much as they want (which can be the entire crop, up to them) and the rest either gets directly distributed to social support groups who are pretty good at getting the food to families who need it, or it gets used in food preservation (jams/etc) workshops and, again, most of what is preserved will end up going where it is needed. Pretty fucking cool stuff to be involved with.

played a mix of tourneys and cash games on stars today. It felt like i was running arse on everything and i got grumpy so i quit and went on a four hour exploratory fishing trip. Logged back into stars and turns out i was only down like $20 or something = funny. Fishing was heaps fun though, so all good. Kept a few perch and a trout, put a few back. Big grind day planned tomorrow. That, plus aqua-jogging and some climb-training. Here are some fish from today, the freshwater kind, not the cash-game kind. Rainbow trout's head is a bit squashed cos i whacked it a little too hard perhaps? i prefer them to die instantly if i'm planning to eat them. The perch are pretty big for around here...

between going fishing, getting involved in local enviro-political stuff (here's a website we built http://www.pauatothepeople.org.nz/), and enjoying the last of summer i've barely got around to playing poker... but when i have played i've been playing a-game. Which makes me happy.

late morning yesterday and my gf asked for fish for the bbq. And 'variety please'. I put some back, but kept enough and a few hours later:

Where do you go fishing? I'm not to bothered about the fish but you always seem to catch a variety of beer that looks good.

poker is a funny beast. 3 months into 2013 and it's still my job.
fitness and injury rehab is a funny thing. 3 months into 2013 and i'm almost back to fine on the rehab front after messing my body up in a fall in november last year. I'm now swimming without problems, riding my bike again, going on light runs, climbing on toprope, etc. Still not getting in the ocean for surf or hunting because I need to do more work on my core-stability, nor am i running seriously or on tarmac cos i'm not sure about high impact stuff just yet, same goes for lead-climbing and bouldering..

Local enviro-politics is going well. I'm putting my pre-poker experience as a not to be messed with public service principal analyst to good use, and it's helping the cause. Back then i got paid a whole lot to do bureaucracy stuff, and now i'm doing it as a passionate volunteer. Poker allows that, it's pretty cool. But i do need to remember to put in the hours on the poker front too, cos i still need to pay the bills!

there are supermarkets and/or liquor stores between me and almost all of my local fishing spots I got a new filleting knife yesterday, then went fishing and got to try out the knife last night. Turns out that using a filleting glove plus a super sharp custom blade makes things a lot faster... I'm going to buy a chest freezer sometime in the next couple of weeks and then i'll fill it with enough fish fillets to last the winter! and then i guess i'll get psyched and go buy a rifle to be able to go get myself some wild goat and venison. Guess i should get a big freezer rather than a small one...

I didn't really expect a photo of me picking a pear to take up half a page in a newspaper, but all good - and the article was written just fine.

been playing quite a lot of poker. Bought a new computer today (well, paid anyway. It;s still being built) because the backlight on my laptop monitor died. Still able to use it via the 2nd monitor, but complicated.

did a live-to-air radio interview about this local politics issue this morning. Hasn't been podcast yet. I expected 5 minutes, it ended up 20 minutes. Life is pretty manic. And awesome.

Daven really enjoyed reading through your thread. I have to say I've always thought you had life licked pretty well sir. It's been a long time since I've been around but I've managed to start playing again so I'll be around FTR as well. Keep up the good life and find the correct balance so as to play/work appropriately and always enjoy!!!

It's normal that it feels like work when you stay at lower stakes than you can handle. I'd move up a bit if I were you, and get into the study habit to improve your play, that'll keep you going.

in late june a mate messaged me this:
    I have a thought/plan.

Are you keen to try in a couple of weeks to walk from town over/around the silver peaks from 5pm friday till 5pm Saturday non stop?

    July 13 - 14th

Friday, 5pm, and we started walking into the sunset. Middle of winter, forecast of minus 5 degrees celsius overnight, big plans. Saturday, 4pm. Still walking, having been some pretty cool places. Saturday, 5pm. Beer tasted good.

Interesting adventure/experience. Body was a little tired on sunday...

in other news, inthe last two months I have played more hands HU with Jennysmom than with any other player. Hang on, isn't he crushing the black=card pro leaderboard? yeah, true, good point. Is that kinda like renton came into irc and asked someone to start tables at 2-4 with hiim a few years back, and i was happy to oblige? yeah, hmm, similar.... games are good? dunno. Games are heavy.

in other news, i saw redzill4r sitting the other day, but he sat out and the tables broke before i could get in on the action

i'm learning heaps about fishing. Went out yesterday arvo, and again this morning.
Tonight's big decision is whether to eat fresh salmon, fresh trout, or both.

played some poker over the last couple of weeks. gambool etc.
probably going to play yet more poker over the next couple of weeks, cos, ya know, bills to pay

    life's good.

good question, and I'm not at all sure whether shove > call in this spot.

His 3b range at this point seemed to be atc. His fold to 4b was 100%. Preflop and my flat might well have been a mistake (vs 4b/get it in). Dynamic and his play at previous tables and this one meant i thought his range after his turn bet was mostly ace hi or worse, with the occasional bit of gutter-trash/8x/5x thrown in. I'd seen him slow down with made hands postflop (top pair/second pair type of things). I figured he'd call at least some of his 5x trash and ace hi, and on the rare occasions he called better i'd have six outs. I also figured he was reasonably likely to get it in behind on the turn with so much already committed, whereas on the river he'd more likely fold hands that i beat.

or maybe i just got excited to turn a gutshot so decided to jam cos i was sick of the dynamic and figured he was fos most of the time (and the rest of the time i had some outs). Plus i really had no idea what to do on a bunch of river cards...

probably some combo of the two.

thx. I like hearing peoples thoughts on hands like this one b/c I almost never do what you did...too passive I guess. It seems like it was pretty opponent specific...
