    $50NL Fail.

Back to $25NL for a week.
  7. #7
I wouldn't look at it as fail, but rather, just not time yet. gO get those 25nl donks for awhile, 50 will be there again when you're ready.
  8. #8
    Thanks m2m.

Been running at $50NL for about 6K hands and I feel like I can exploit a decent amount of regs at $50NL. I've found that there are some super aggro regs that are easily beaten, along with some very passive ones, the regs seem more extreme (maybe just the sessions I've played) than at $25NL.

As an idea let me share my current plan for moving up. Don't take shots. Rather just do study sessions at the next higher limit. By study session I mean open like 1 table for 30 minutes and put everyone on a hand on every street - close the table after 30 minutes and fully analyze a hand or two. Then go back to the normal limit for a normal session. Then as time, confidence and fish infested waters dictate it will become natural to flesh out the presence at the higher limit with perhaps a full (shortish) session with a reduced number of tables - but with strict stop loss and a study emphasis - even a stop session and study process to be kicked off whenever anything happens that I don't understand. And even then I would continue the single table 30 minute study sessions until I'm fully moved up and rolled for that limit. The study sessions of course don't need the full BR requirement of moving up so it can all become a gradual thing.

Not a bad idea, I'll probably do something along those lines at $100NL (not for a few months though), but I'm at $50NL to stay (stop loss at 1K bankroll, but I'm at about $1300 now). I played at $50NL over last summer for about 25K hands at about 3BB/100 and I feel as comfortable now as I did then.

January was such a roller coaster month, I dabbled at HU and realized that the variance is incredible, and my heart can't take it.

I was up $326 at one point, tried $50NL lost 3 buyins, dropped to $25NL and lost another 6 or so, almost to even for the month, started doing well again, played some heads up and got rolled, cleared my $300 bonus and started playing $50NL where I'm running like 3BB/100 over 6K hands, which is is counting my first shot at $50NL where I dropped 3-4 buyins.

Today I plan to use up most of my FPP's playing 280FPP hyper-turbos (6 max). I have 9.5K. My goal is $165 which is about a 44% winrate. Top 2 pay, 3rd gets the 280FPP back. (top 2 = win)

Edit: Ship $154 T$ from 9.2K FPP's! Now I gotta find someone to exchange with.

Just played some of the best poker of my life over the last 1K hands.

Dropped a quick 1.5 buyins and then rallied to finish up 1 buy-in and just felt that I played fantastically.

But this is a game like golf...once you think you have figured it out, you shank the ball out of bounds.

Time to go out and have some fun.
  12. #12
Been playing bad. But I got a sweat from BooG and sweated him, and then later on sweated M2M and learned a lot about 3betting and playing your opponents at 6max.

    Work in progress.
  13. #13
And when you thought it couldn't get any worse.

    It does.
  14. #14
Keep goin dude, don't worry about the results. I just advocated doing this to sil in his blog and I think it'll apply here too. Take a week where you only open up HEM/PT3 to start up the Auto Import. Don't look at winnings, graphs, stats. NOTHING. Once the week is up, go ahead and look it over for that week compared to the week prior to that. I think you will be pleasantly surprised at both the results and your play. If not, you will be able to easily identify leaks that AREN'T induced by results and are gaps in your understanding of the situation rather than you're down 3 BIs over the last two days.
  15. #15
I'm not really results oriented so that won't matter much to me. I'm not only running bad I'm playing bad on top of it.

It is very frustrating. I'm going to drop down to $25NL and play a small amount of tables and work my way back up.

Going to go for 20 buy-ins at $25NL before moving back up...yaawn style.

Except I'll mix it up 6max and FR
  18. #18
Scratch that. I'm revamping my game at $10NL. No more tricky stuff. Just going to own bitches.

Going to win 10 buy-ins down here before moving up.

And stop trying to win every fucking hand.

i moved back to 10nl in december and ground it back up through the stakes. It's gotta be good for you, or something.. I moved down to 50nl earlier this week for a 20buyin dose of sorting things out too.
dranger gave me some sage advice way back in November, and it bears repeating:
    ABC poker

I interpreted that as something like:
    identify and target the fish
careful against reg/nit stats type players
    value bet
    don't bluff too hard
    play position
don't play stupid ranges in ep, nor call stupid ranges in lp/blinds
note opponent's stack size and spr at all times

    cool
10buyins should take up to 10k hands, but it's probably worth it.

    Cya next weekend.

So, I've lost it. Although I still play within my bankroll, I am over rolled for any stakes that I can beat at this present moment. I have withdrawn $850 leaving me with $250, 25 buy-ins for .05/.10

I plan to split time between $10 PLO and $10 NLH and working the bankroll back up until I graduate. My game has taken a nose dive, along with my decision making ( CBat28 Poker Player Ranking and Stats at PokerStars )

I'm going to try and strip myself from my bad habits and look at NLH from a different POV by starting all over and studying the BC. I know that I have the capability to win, I just need to get my head on straight. So for the next two months, it's not about volume, it is about quality time spent playing/studying.

so, you probably know i moved down to 10nl back in december, and am maintaining my roll at 50nl levels for the moment rather than moving up - so i unfortunately know what you're talking about...

ABC poker is a good start. Focus on position and starting hand selection pre-flop, just get it right. Then work from there. Discipline, question every call - calling is often a leak, is folding or raising better? Also, 25buyins is kinda tight, i'd prefer 30-35 cos i'm a bankroll nit PLO is higher variance than NLH...

i wish you good luck, but it's not about luck. It's about playing to the best of your ability, cos you can beat these games. Do it. And list the study you are doing, like every week list the time spent each day and what you spent it on.
  24. #24
Thanks Daven. I played about 1000 hands today, started out down 3 buy-ins because of my continuance loose calls, etc. So I took a break after about 300 hands and I ended up down about 1 buy-in on the day.

Felt good to fold fold fold fold. I have been calling WAY too much, like you said. I've been trying to go into hands with a plan and reevaluating ranges on each card instead of mashing, which worked well in my second session. I'm 6 tabling FR, which gives me plenty of time to make decisions.
  25. #25
Oh and about the 25 buy-ins...I have a $100 bonus I'm going to clear in 240VPP, so I have some room there. Also, if I lose 25 buy-ins at $10NL, its over for me lol.
  26. #26
Okay, been pretty profitable at $10NL so far.

I've also been playing some 1 table micro SnG's as of late. They are pretty fun (and profitable), I'd recommend them. I'll probably play a couple more sessions $10NL and then move up to $25NL.

Well, the bankroll is at $450 thanks to shipping $50 to a good friend who has and always will display horrible bankroll management no matter how often I tell him otherwise. So as of right now, I cannot move up.

I have currently made 10 buy-ins in just under 14,000 hands at 10NL. My winrate is at 7.69, and honestly, it is because I tend to zone out while playing, otherwise it could be much higher.

    Things that need to happen:
    1. Focus while playing. Make my sessions short and when I start losing focus, quit the session and cut down tables to 6-8.
    2. Do more studying. Study the amount of time that I play.
    3. Use the IRC for more than entertainment. Don't just goof around, actually post hands.

Until I get to and establish myself at $100NL, I will no longer be cashing out for any reason unless it is due to necessity. I have played through $25NL too many times to keep dropping down due to unneeded cash outs. I'm looking to move up to $25NL ASAP. Once I hit $500 bankroll it will happen, which is just under 3 buyins at $10NL. Need is necessity, meaning I have absolutely no money to get by with. I have about $3500 at my disposal, and $1400 in the market. I will make about another $500 from my on campus job before I graduate. And then I will be in search of a job, I have some connections that I am working on, so I hope one of them works out.

I may have to start playing poker on wireless in the library due to my connection in the dorms cutting out for 10-60 seconds every 10 minutes or so. This is very frustrating and often forces me to sit out of multiple tables. I'm going to give the library wireless a try this afternoon.

Also, I will be depositing again whenever there is another deposit bonus.

Not a very big sample here, but I do feel that I beat $10NL for a decent win rate, 9.5bb/100 for 16 buy-ins.

[x] Beat $10NL with a respectable win rate.

My bankroll has now hit $500 and I feel that I am ready to move up to $25NL. I have been mildly successful at $25NL beating it at 3.45bb/100 over 84,000 hands. I am nowhere near satisfied with this rate, and I am looking to beat it at at least 6bb/100 for 15 buyins before moving up to $50NL. 15 buyins at 6bb/100 will take me about 25,000 hands, which I hope to be able to do in April and a couple weeks into May.

Goals for the month of April (in order):
[ ] Start my career/Find a job for when I graduate in May
[ ] Keep doing well this semester
    [ ] Keep studying poker
    [ ] 16,000 hands @ $25NL (533 per day)
    [ ] 6bb/100

No need to add in keep working out because this is like my constant. I just love working out and staying fit.

  31. #31
Thanks M, I have some good connections in the mix right now, its just about getting one of them pan to pan out. I hope that by the time I graduate, I will be rolled for $50NL with some cushion, just so if I cannot find a job immediately after, I have unrealized income coming into my Pokerstars account. But I do not want to use that income.

Had my first session at $25NL today in about 45 days. Played 395 hands for a profit of $58. Ran and played well. I will probably get another session in tonight of about the same amount of hands. Table and seat selection is SO SO SO key to sustaining a high win rate. There is no point to sit infront of a deep stacked LAG, when there are 100 other tables going on with plenty of poor players. Also the really loose tables usually tighten up after the loose players busto and all of the regs join off of the waiting list.

you beat 10nl well, 25nl isn't much different. You know that already.
good luck finding a job! poker to pay the bills would be stressful without a huge cushion - it's bad enough with that cushion sometimes.... but, depends what you need to get by - making a couple hundred a week is fairly straightforward.

Up about a buy-in at $25NL over about 7K hands. Been playing pretty shitty and had a few coolers the last couple days from some set over sets. I'm dissapointed in my play over the past couple days though. But, I'm pretty happy with the way I played in my 2nd session today of about 1,000 hands. I was up about two buy-ins, got set over setted twice, putting me back down to about even on the session, but rallied back to win 1.5 buyins.

My non-showdown winnings were in the positive for the day too. And usually when this happens, I don't spew and call extra streets and I make timely 3bets and play the 3bets well post flop.

I sweated m2m today in a little $25NL 6m action...he's good. I learned a few things and am interested to sweat some more or receive a sweat, hopefully full ring next time.

Long day today, worked all day, then had classes, then hit up the library to finish an assignment. So pretty exhausted and had trouble concentrating on the assignment while my headache got stronger. So no grinding tonight.

Tomorrow will be very similar. I might have a little bit of time in between classes to get an hour session in or so. So hopefully get some hands in during that time, as it seems to be the only feasible time for it.

I'm up like 2 buy-ins at $25NL thanks to running over EV. But I'm basically playing break even poker. I should have had a sick session today, but I find ways to just give my money away, which leaves me around BE. I got some leaks I need to fill right now. Maybe I'll do some sweat sessions if m2m is around this week. I forget when he leaves for Europa.

I've started reading Sklansky's book about Holdem (the one talked about in the BC). It is pretty interesting. So far it's nothing I don't know, but it's having me take a harder look at those thing while playing, since I have been neglecting some of them as I play.

But as of right now, I need to stop making hero calls because frankly, the amount of times I am wrong just makes it not worth it.

Lent a friend $55 in some 4.40s yesterday and the quarter million at 30%/70%. He won a 4.40 MTT and placed in like 900th for $69. So, profit $69 for me!

Been putting in some serious volume over the past few days (about 2k hands per day...which is serious for me with school and work and all). I'm not sure if I'm going to make goldstar since I am traveling on this Saturday and I realized I don't get .1 VPP per hand, but more like .09, which actually makes a pretty large difference.

I've made some bad plays, some good plays, and ran into AA twice for stacks with KK this month (no vice versa's of that this month). Once was my fault when a .9 3bet and 0% 4bet over 300 hands, 4bets you relatively small from UTG, he probably has AA. The other one was standard. Also I've had a few people chase their flush draws to the river vs my overpair/sets and lost stacks there. And once got check raised with AA when I knew I should fold, but jammed. But I still feel very confident in some of the changes that I've made to my game over this month, and I feel that I can crush $25NL and it's only a matter of time before I start. Also I need a little bit more discipline when it comes to the passive reg wakes up with a check/raise vs my overpair.

I played five $10 double or nothings turbos this morning because I couldn't sleep all that well and I cashed in all 5. It's nice winning every all in that you are ahead in (and one when you are behind). Ship $47.80.

Oh and I can't change the title of the post anymore, so I'm stuck with the sad face lol.

I've tried to change it a few times and it isn't letting me. I can live with the title though lol.

Dave! - Yeah seriously, no point not to 4bet there.

Had a pretty cool session today of about 700 hands. Won just over a buy-in and won 100% of my showdowns, but only went to showdown 10% of the time. Ever since I've increased my 3bet to about 5% with position 3bets and re steals, my red line has pretty much flat lined, I'm a few dollars over even, which is pretty freakin sweet. I just have to work on folding to obvious strength and I'm going to be good to go .

[X] Keep doing well this semester

    [X] Keep studying poker
Been going strong with this, but I know I can get even more consistent at this.
    [X] 16,000 hands @ $25NL (533 per day)

    Summer Time, Livins Easy:

Okay, so I'm graduating in three weeks. And I have a lease signed with two friends back near my hometown, which will come to be about $400 a month per person. Right now I have about $4,500 of cash and cash equivalents (not counting poker $$$ because I plan to not withdraw for the rest of the year). Including my necessities like food, gas, and car insurance, I figure I will need about $200 a week, or $800 a month to get by. So with no job, that $4,500 would last me about five months. So that means, I give myself two months to get myself a real job (or become a reg at $200NL, low expectations on that in that amount of time). If I cannot find a decent job, I will go back to working at the grocery store until that happens (worst case scenario).

I'm in okay shape right now, but I've definitely been in better. Ever since my ACL reconstruction surgery, I've gotten a little lazy when it comes to eating. I still workout 3-4 times a week and have been rehabbing the knee, but I want to get myself back into really good shape like I was last summer. I don't think this will be a problem because being healthy is one thing that I've never had to push myself to do. And now that I will no longer be dealing with the college life, I should be able to get myself back to great shape.

My goal is to keep improving both as a person and as a poker player. My girlfriend and I are going to be about 2.5 hours away for the next two years, as she goes to grad school and I look for work. It's going to be difficult, but we have a very good relationship so I think that we will be able to pull through.

When it comes to poker, I'd like to put in 30K hands during May at $25NL and if things go well, move up to $50NL at the end of the month.

    Lol, that looks familiar!

NH. I actually put you on JJ, which makes my play extremely terrible. But I thought there could be a QJ suited in your range since we were short handed, and a big discount on AQ.

Found out today that the 20bb-50bb are so extremely soft.

    April:

    + 218 tables
    + 44 T$
    + 48 Dbl or Nothins
    +69

    = +$379

Pretty mediocre month. About 4bb/100 at $25NL which isn't anything special.

I've moved up to $50NL 20bb-50bb. Been doing pretty well there so far. These short stack tables are so incredibly soft. My winrate is a little inflated right now, but no complaints here!

    WEEEE

$50NL has been great! I'm running about 7ptbb/100 this month and making about $35 an hour in 11.5 hours. I redeposited $500 for the bonus on stars. I'm going to cash out $560, the $60 will be to pay for Table Ninja because it makes my life 10x easier. My bankroll has been sky rocketing as of late and I'm going to go for my first $1K month of gross profit from the tables. I know its early, but I can dream

  55. #55
Okay, I am way too results oriented. I'm going to try to play sessions without looking at my profits/losses for the session.

  56. #56
    I'm sorry but I lol'd.
  57. #57
I lol'd too. but only because I thought in my head "I bet he has a terrible session after that brag post and dream for the 1k month" poker karma imo.

But yeah in all seriousness good luck man and try not to care so much about the short term swings. It's really difficult and something I still struggle with even though I'm experiecned enough to know better. It's a mental battle imo and it's better to get into the habit of not caring while you're still at 25NL/50NL.
  58. #58
Haha, IK right, I got a little carried away. Anyways, yeah I'm working on the not caring thing, but it is difficult for me at new levels. Anyways no more brag posts
  59. #59
good thing I didn't change the title to a after the brag post cuz I would have just had to change it back

I'm in the process of implementing some really bad habits to my game like I did a few months ago. This usually happens when I begin to run bad. As I have begun to do.

So, I am cutting out all $100NL tables. I am going to stick to the 50NLFR tables, 8 at a time so I can focus better than having 12. If I drop a few more buyins thanks to ridiculously bad play, I will drop down to $25NL.

As we talked about it briefly in IRC, the same thing happens to me. It gets easier each new time you feel it coming on though and over time as you gain experience your discipline will improve and you'll be able to ride it out longer and block a higher amount of those bad habits from coming back. In the meantime make sure you stick with your plan of cutting tables and don't be afraid to drop down if you need to. Your bankroll is only part of what dictates what stake you should be playing, the other is your mindset. I know its really hard to force yourself to drop tables and stakes at first, but once you do so you'll thank yourself in the end. It isn't defeat by any means, just a necessary measure to take while enduring this business.
  62. #62
i'm in the same place as you. it's amazing how quickly your game can slip. trying to get rid of spewy habits that crept back in and getting back to A game.
  63. #63
Notice my redline as I break even over the last 15K hands...

Back to cutting down tables, I run good for a session and I bump the tables back up. I'm going to drop down to 8 tables for a longer period of time. My dilemma is that I was looking to get to platinum star this month, and this means I'll have to play 33% more. So we'll see.
  64. #64
So I've made the switch to 50NL 40-100bb, no more short stacking because I missed the post flop play not just being shoveadoodles/fold. I've worked out some of my redline problems and the money starts rolling in. Go figure!

Here are some of the big hands of the month and I'll have a monthly update at the end of the day, I'm about 95VPP away from platinum star for the first time.
