Default Fold made straight on river?

Hand according to plan until river. Then I'm WTF? Villain is 18/16/7.5 over 140 hands. He has 23% steal attempts, so he's sort of aware of position. Can we find a fold here?

    Merge - $0.04 NL (6 max) - Holdem - 6 players
    Hand converted by PokerTracker 4

    BB: $5.62
    UTG: $5.19
    MP: $3.25
    Hero (CO): $4.18
    BTN: $4.10
    SB: $4.02

SB posts SB $0.02, BB posts BB $0.04

Pre Flop: (pot: $0.06) Hero has J 9

UTG raises to $0.14, fold, Hero calls $0.14, fold, fold, fold

    Flop: ($0.34, 2 players) 8 T Q
UTG bets $0.25, Hero calls $0.25

    Turn: ($0.84, 2 players) J
UTG checks, Hero bets $0.63, UTG calls $0.63

    River: ($2.10, 2 players) A
UTG bets $4.17 and is all-in, Hero ??

    Looks like an easy fold.

Even though you said the hand went to plan before the river I don't like the plan.

I don't get why we would call an UTG open with J9o unless he's a super fish, just fold pre.

Raise flop for value as it hits his range well (AA-TT/88/AQ/KQ/QJs/KJ/JTs).

Now that we're here fold river as he has a king always. No way he's bluffing/freaking out enough to call.

fold pre, as played raise flop and then decide whether to call or 4b

It depends on how easily we can take pots away from him.

Given the turn action, I would lol fold this too.

I feel like he plays his cards face up and is extremely easy to float/bluff, especially on wet boards where he tends to check/call or check/fold without a made hand.

Yeah, just don't be like me on a bad day and go crazy with the BN/CO flats.

Don't forget that he's going to tend to have better pre-flop equity, make more nut hands and unless he's a total robot, he's going to adjust if you make it too obvious what you're doing.

still think pre is a fold, even after hearing justification.

Bet flop, check/call turn is ABSURDLY consistent with KJ/KQ/KK and this would be a somewhat reasonable (if cute) line with AK.

I fold pre vs this villains utg range. Don't we pretty much have to flop a straight like always to make calling pre profitable?

Yeah, replied before reading the rest of the thread. Still fold.

Thanks, guys, I appreciate all the help.

Question: what's a good calling range in this spot? We have position, and btw BTN was tight enough I didn't expect him to come along. I would 3bet AK, KK+, flat QQ, JJ, TT, AJ+, KQ. What other combos can be flatted here?

Can we call with sc's? Or medium pp's? Anything else?
