    Default 1500:Some thoughts

So I've been wanting to write a post like this for a while, but never had any good ideas to write about. Then I thought to myself that writing about the more general aspects of poker could yield good results.

    What you play

Games are always changing. Some decline in popularity, others lose the large edges initially possible because lots of people move into them and do more analysis.

I think if you play for fun trying a new game once in a while is good for you and will help keep things fresh. If you play for money maybe there's a game with a better edge/rake structure out there. No reason you have to play holdem. I might search around for something for something different to play in the near future.

    Who you play

Deliberately play against good players every so often just to improve, even if your edge is uncertain or non existent.

    When you play

Once you've been reading poker forums and articles for a while most people are better players. But people don't put much focus on how they are feeling before they start playing a session. To be a good poker player you've got to be logical and detached from the inherent short term chaos of the game. In a way you have to accept it.

Avoiding playing when upset/angry/bored makes poker so much easier.

    Where to play

I wouldn't keep a significant amount of money on any poker site. "Significant" is different for everyone but when it reaches that amount I'd withdraw down to an amount you are comfortable losing entirely. Pretty obvious stuff but worth saying.

    Why you play

Know the reason you play poker. Fun? Money? Competition? Whatever it is make sure you stick to it. So for example someone who plays for fun shouldn't be getting annoyed that they aren't as good as a professional player who spends hours doing database analysis. People are so hard on themselves sometimes, myself included for sure.

I play online because it's an easy way to play lots of hands and examine the maths of the game, playing live never interested me except with friends.

Hopefully this helps a few people.
