If there's anything that would scare novice players it would be to high of a league buy in.
If everyone in the league has sufficiently deep pockets that losing a few hundred is trivial, then quarter-a-point should be fine. But if the money means anything to a player, I think having a per-point payoff will lead to more people quitting. I don't know what buy-in people were planning on, but if, for example, it's $100, then the per-point system could cost some players more than their buy-in. Say a player played 12 games and had the misfortune (or played so badly) that he went 2-10 with an average points per game of -50. He would lose 1.5 times the buy-in (12 x 50 x 0.25 = $150) in points. I haven't seen all of the results from this tourney, but my biggest win was +178 points, which would have been worth $44.50 (or almost half the buy-in) at $0.25/pt.

Admittedly, losing $250 isn't that big of a deal to most of us, but if there is just a flat buy-in with no per-point cost, a player knows what his max loss is and all of the money he is ever going to put into the pot is already in (so there's less incentive to quit). But if he's routinely getting crushed by 60-100 points per game ($15-$25 at $0.25/pt.), he might decide to cut his losses and quit before the end.

I've done pretty well in this tourney and losing $200-$300 isn't a big deal to me, but I'd like to avoid giving people a financial motivation to drop out of the tourney

OneByPhi goes to 10-1 after squeaking by Ctrevino by 1 point with an unbelievably lucky comeback in the last 4 deals.

New to the forum. Definitely want to get involved. If the potential of a significant loss beyond what the "buy-in" or what was the anticipated amount one could lose is a significant concern, there are a lot of ways to address said concern.

    1) .25 per point up to a pre-set cap; after that the match is over even if there were a few rounds left.
    2) .25 per point up to a pre-set cap; above said cap the amount is much less, say .10 per point.
    3) Instead of making the $ mostly about points, instead make winning the match the big $, say $100 for the match, and .05 per point additionally.
    4) .25 per point up to a pre-set cap, no $ for any points above that amount.

Admittedly each solution kind of messes with the marginal value of a point, so the question becomes whether the damage done by kind of messing with gameplay is less important than protecting someone from losing far more than they want. Me personally, if you guys want the focus to be on winning the match, I'd put the bulk of the money on simply winning, and then an extra amount on a per point basis that's far lower than what would be normal.

But I also just skimmed this thread so I could be missing something; maybe these have already been discussed. Just felt my first post should at least TRY to contribute.

    Welcome, DuckTollingGrinder!

In addition to this league, we're getting some other ladder and tournament structures setup. Soon people will be able to play for FTR points too. I'm looking forward to all the action!

    Cheers,
    Eric

    I'm 7-3 now.

For those of you who want more ofc action, another league is starting: http://www.flopturnriver.com/pokerfo...ue-197130.html You can be in as many different leagues as you want as long as you can make time for them.

    Cheers,

MeGrimlock was complaining that the summary hand histories are sometimes hard to read. This is your chance to vote for more display options: http://www.flopturnriver.com/pokerfo...48#post2195848

What's going on with the league? Is the "regular season" over? Have the playoffs started? If so, who is in the playoffs? What were people's final records? What are the seeds? Info would be great, thanks.

Good questions. All I know for sure is that my regular season is done and your regular season is done.

Hey guys, not sure where all the confusion was since I did, in fact, post something about what was going on.
Not exactly sure if we are completely caught up.
I'm looking at it now and seeing who is left to play.
With EJ quitting, and fact that nobody was enjoying the setup or the playoff structure ...kinda got discouraged on this whole thing.

Bare with me ...I know I have to play Chris and I will be done, but I think he is still behind with other players as well.

This has been a trial/error process for sure.

Since there's no cash involved, it's really no big thing. However, if this ever turns into a cash game, I think it's important to make a united effort to make sure that all games get played in a timely fashion, that all results are immediately posted in the forum, and that the standings are updated after every game. This doesn't have to be a lot of work for whoever ends up as the "commissioner"/"banker" for the game--the players can do this. Eric and I consistently posted our results, and it always took me less than 1 minute to do so. If everyone would do this, and if the current standings were always posted (so that a player could easily copy-paste-edit to reflect the result of his latest game), I think it would go a long way not only to satisfy information junkies like me, but to keep everyone's interest engaged. But when the time between games drags on and no one has a clear idea where they stand, it's easy to just blow the whole thing off.

So the SAC league is dead? I've heard nothing for a week. Again, since money isn't involved, it's no tragedy, but if any of the guys in this league ever want to be involved in a league again, please take the lesson of what happens when things don't move quickly forward and information is not immediately and widely shared.

The FTR league that MMM is running is starting out slowly because of many late entries and some delays in getting opponents together, but MMM is right on top of the info, so everyone is engaged.

Yo, this OFC Pineapple League was a trial run ...it was for fun ...and it was not the focal point of my life over the last few weeks.
I apologized for the delay and current state of the "stalled-out" league ...but I would appreciate it if you would pump your breaks and calm down about the whole thing.

It's not a big deal. It wasn't for money. And you blasting me on a message board is not really appetizing. So chill out and get over it.

    Guys,

Let's not make drama where there is none. OneByPhi is right that there should be more updates if there is money involved. MeGrimlock is right that there was no money on this run.

Okay. I apologize for crossing over the line. I didn't intend it as a rip at you, but as lament that the league seemed to wither away out of apathy. There had been talk that it would evolve into a serious league with cash entries and prizes, and I guess I got my hopes up that that would happen. I love this game, and although I play fairly frequently in small-stakes live cash games in Seattle, there's nowhere to play in casinos around here, and no opportunity that I am aware of to play in a cash tourney of the type we had discussed, which I think would be really fun. I apologize if expressing my disappointment came off as blasting you. Good luck in the FTR league.

    Peace

No worries, it's all good. We all enjoy this game a lot and we'll keep playing it together one way or another.

Are we just going to say that OneByPhi won the league and I came in 2nd or are we going to play this out?
