Are the limit tables fishier than the NL tables?

Default Are the limit tables fishier than the NL tables?

Having taken a year or so away from poker, I've come back and found out that the micro stakes NL games are actually pretty tight. There's still fishy, and beatable, but there's a whole lot more people that are practicing pre flop hand selection. God knows what it'll be like when I get to 100NL.

I'm just wondering if with the overarching popularity of NL, if FL might be a whole lot fishier for tight abc players to take advantage of, or if pound for pound there's still more money to be made at NL. Also, it'd be nice to having something for when NL isn't working for me.

Is Hyper's guide still the shiznit, or is that strategy not going to work in todays games?

LHE is still pretty fishy overall. Some sites/limits have a lot of rocks, but playing too tight preflop can hurt you a lot more in LHE than in it can in NL. I haven't read Hyper's guide in a while, but I am sure most of it applies still. Some people have gotten more aggro in blind v blind and steal situations (btn vs BB, CO vs btn 3bets, etc) though.
Some days it feels like I've been standing forever, waiting for the bank teller to return so I can cash in all these Sklansky Bucks.

I think they both have the same fish factor.

i quit LHE last year because it was way too nitty and there were basically no more games to join (at UB). i do not think hyper's guide is much help when playing against checkraising rocks.

i think LHE is pretty much dead, as evidenced by the lack of activity in this forum. even in live cardrooms like the taj mahal, there is 2/4 LHE and nothing else. NL has replaced LHE in the same way HE replaced 7stud about 5-6 years ago.

Yes. I for one think that any player with a clue about pot equity or any other basic aspect of poker should avoid LHE.

Now hear this - LHE is no place for good players. So all y'all go on and play something else, and leave LHE to me.

Generally agree with this, but factoring in the loss of LHE players to NHLE and other games, it can be a pain to find a nice LHE game to play in.

I think Stud is better to get into now than LHE. How about HU Badugi?

Anyway I've had better luck with limit than NL and I've tried both for months on end. Still I want to try to break into NL, there is just so much more room for skill in that game.

it seems to me in pot limit you can only bet a certain amount so it causes the donkeys to call and see the next card. That is why I prefer no limit hold em

I like NL better than Limit. But I think the number of fishes is more or less the same.

I think there are trends with poker, especially online. There was a time when most people played 5 card draw or 5 card stud and wild card games. You don't see them played much and online there are not a lot of sites or players playing these games. Texas Holdem did not really take off until the 1990's and outside of WSOP and some other major tourneys, most people played limit. Now all those limit players have moved over to no limit. Originally no limit was played like bingo with most of the action being preflop gambling. Now the good players have the game wired and because of all of the training, coaching on forums, poker sites and better poker literature the game is reaching a saturation point. I am not saying that money can not be made in NLHE, but it requires a lot more effort than before unless you are playing at high stakes. I am seeing that games with smaller edges will become more popular such as Omaha and eight game. One of the reasons that better players profit is because of the learning curve for newbies at different games who pay to learn, so to speak.

The number of fishes is much much higher in NL just by the shear volume of NL vs limit. If you play on a 2nd or 3rd tier site you might as well forget it. There are no games running at all for limit, therefor table selection is near to impossible. I have just started the switch over to NL after playing for 2+ years at limit due to this one fact.

If I was starting out again I would probably start out at PLO. Now there is lots and lots of fishes there. But for how long nobody knows.

I haven't played limit for a long time. I made the switch to NLHE tourneys...mostly SnG's. I had found though, back when I played, that LHE was far more about exploiting small advantages. Those small advantages, when seen over a decent sample size, showed significant profit, and we're all here for the profit.

I miss Limit. It was a great way to grind a small profit and a boatload of points. Especially when Titan was dealt, not contributed.

Here in So Cal limit cash is still alive to some degree at the B and M rooms. On any day you can find many $3/$6 and $4/$8 games and if you know where to look, you can find some bigger games as well.

Play is extremely fishy and pretty good money can be made. I've always found that comparing limit to NL is kinda like apples and oranges, they're both fruit but...

I don't think that one has a higher degree of skill either, they require higher amounts of different skills. If you don't have the balls to make a hero call or that huge bluff, you'll lose in NL, if you don't have the brains to calculate your pot equity and other considerations to the Nth degree, you'll probably lose money in limit.

They also require some of the same skills, just maybe applied a little differently. For one, I think everyone should learn limit since it gives you the best unclouded picture of poker fundamentals you will get. It's much harder for most to transition from NL to limit than it is the other way around.
