    Default Another Question about Ethics

This Playing-the-Player forum doesn't get enough love.

Where do you guys stand on saying what you have while you're still in the hand?

I did this at an APL tourney, I said "I have Big Slick" a few times, and kept betting, and opp kept calling with TT when a K was onboard. Big slick won! She was so pisssed, she said next time I say what cards I have they go in the muck. I never heard of that. In fact I distinctly remember a bunch of stories (mostly from supersystem books) about exactly this kind of psych play.

I stopped doing it anyway, since it was perceived as rude there. At cash games with Molinero, this stuff was all part of the fun.

Last time I played live (the Gutshot in London) if you declared your hand during play you were immediately taken out of the hand - didn't matter whether you were lying or not.

House rule dependent. I've seen Daniel Negreanu tell his hand on a few occasions in tourney play.

Ha, I did this at a SNG at FOXWOODS, I had AA, I went all in,this guy asks me, "so what you got a big Ace?"
I said ACE ACE, He says I CALL.
I flip over the AA, he has AJs .
Everyone at the table was like, Holy shit, he wasn't lying.

    I won the hand.
    3 3 3 I'm only half evil.

Yeah Gold was doing it a lot when he took the main event down. We have a guy at our home game that thinks that by telling us his cards we don't believe him. He literally tells us what he has any time we ask him.

Yeah I've got a buddy who does this. He's telling the truth maybe 1/3rd of the time. I can't read his voice/body language with enough accuracy, so I just use his betting patterns to make my decisions for the most part as he usually reveals a lot more though those.

I don't think it should be banned...it usually livens things up, and it's always funny when someone says "I got aces", and nobody believes them till they flip em'

Ha, I did this at my local FOXWOODS, Ten man SNG. some EP guy raises pretty big, it comes around to me, I have AA in LP , I go all in. He's hemming and Hawing, talking outloud. He says you prolly got a big ace...blah blah blah, then straight out asks me, what do you have? I said Ace Ace. He says I CALL, then I snap flip over my Ace Ace. Hilarity ensues.

    Exactly. Comedic gold!

Incidentally, I've never seen someone say "aces" in a serious fashion and NOT have em'.

Well...maybe this one guy, but he was a pathological bluffer so he dun count.

As long as the only active hands are your own and exactly one other person, I don't see any problem with it whatsoever. Given those conditions, I honestly can't see any argument against it whatsoever, but that's just me. Make sure you follow the house rules though. If it's legal and will upset somebody, I guess you just have to weigh the pros and cons. If it's going to make some up-tight fish pissed, I'd avoid doing it.

why do you think the number of opponents matter ? As long as you don't show your hand you may be lying.
I think it is fine as long as it is allowed by house rules

I don't like it with 3 or more people active in the pot for a variety of reasons. One, it opens the door for blatant collusion. It also makes everything very sticky and complicated. Say I'm on the button and turn card is just flipped. I start babbling about my hand. The SB now has some information to work with and the CO very well may not be happy with me, as I've put him at a relative disadvantage. When the pot is HU, these concerns disappear.

I can see your point about cullosion, but this is a really stupid way to collude, regarding positional disavanage, I can see that too; I think that in WSOP it is a floor manager decision whether or not it should be penalized

Kind of random, but I hate when the floor makes decisions. They are generally clueless about poker, almost never witnessed the events in question, and show a lot of bias depending on the crowd and the people involved. I think the dealer is far more qualified to make most decisions that are otherwise made by the floor.

Then again, I don't play a whole lot of live poker so take it fwiw.
