This past weekend served as the proverbial “calm before the storm” that is the lead up to the 2012 Spring Championship of Online Poker. While Party Poker’s 2012 Poker Fest is in full swing, most other sites saw a bit of a drop-off in tournament attendance on Sunday. Could players be resting up for the three week gauntlet that is the 2012 SCOOP? We’ll find out shortly as the epic series kicks off next weekend. Meanwhile, this past weekend saw more big prize pools and five and even six-figure payouts to some of the world’s best online poker players. PokerFest event $26, a $1,000 buy-in High Roller event, fell just short of its $450,000 guarantee. Still, with a massive prize pool and only 447 entrants, there was a six-figure first-place prize up for grabs. Unfortunately, some of the air was let out of the final table’s tires as the remaining three players decided upon a chip chop.
Chops seemed to be the theme of the past weekend, as most of the major events failed to crown a legitimate champion. It can be easy to look down on those wanting to chop, as it hurts the final-table viewing experience, but when so much money is on the line, it’s easy to take the guaranteed cash and run. Hopefully that won’t be the case during the 2012 SCOOP. The first events kick off on May 6th and run through May 20th. Players of all skill levels can play as each event has three sub-tournaments with low, medium, and high buy-in amounts. Players can enter and compete in 1, 2, or all 3 levels.
