February was a great month for high-stakes tournament action.  With FTOPS XI providing the online world a huge boost as well as PokerStars 25 billionth hand promotion, the tournament world saw a huge boost in participation.  Looking to grow off the momentum, PokerStars announced an intriguing tournament series called SCOOP. The series won’t start until the beginning of April, so let’s hope that March does not see too big of a drop in tournament attendance.

Getting the day going as usual was the PokerStars Sunday Warm-Up.   The Warm-Up is a $750,000 guaranteed event starting just after Noon EST on Sundays.  This week over 4400 participants nearly created a $900,000 prize pool. All in all, first place was worth $114,000 and change as “frtk” battled with “dippedydawg” for the title and a bundle of cash. Eventually frtk proved to be too much as he won the final flip after holding more than a 5:1 chip lead:

FullTilt’s effort to keep up with PokerStars has been noticeable.  However, it seems their site just cannot attract as many players as their main competitor.  For the time being they will have to settle for 2nd best, which is still a nice consolation prize.  Kicking off a big Sunday for FullTilt was the Sunday Brawl, a $240+$16 knock-out event, which pays $40 to a player every time he/she busts another competitor. 27 FullTilt sponsored professionals attempted to take home the title and the $100,000+ first-place check.  Among the “red-pros” were Ram Vaswani, Scott Fischman, and WSOP Main Event champion Huck Seed. Heads-Up play came down to “utreg” and “rkwlrkwlgofk.” It was not easy to find much information on either player. Eventual runner up rkwlrkwlgofk had only one other five-figure score to his name before this tournament, while it seems utreg has had a bit more success.  Once again a tournament came down to a flip, with utreg flopping top-pair and holding on for the victory:

The Sunday Million continues to see some nice growth in attendance.  The tournament, which had been struggling at the end of 2008, has been easily reaching its guarantee every week this year.  This Sunday, 8,664 players took their shot at the $200,000+ first place prize.  A troubling trend occurring in the Million has been the early final-table chip-chop.  This week was no exception as the tournament was chopped with four players left.  The trouble with chopping is that it kills the final table action.  Players are no longer playing for a difference of $70,000 for first, it is merely $30,000.  Also, the difference between 2nd and 3rd is $45,000, nothing to scoff at either.  Below are the 8 bust-out hands from the final table and the top-9 pay outs:

FullTilt’s answer to the Sunday Million is their $750k Guarantee.   This week nearly 4200 players paid the $200+$16 entry fee creating a prize pool of $837,600. Thirty-eight FullTilt sponsored professionals including high-stakes pro Richard “CHUFTY” Ashby, PCA Winner Ryan Daut, and WSOP bad-boy Josh Arieh all made appearances.  Ram Vaswani made a deep run, eventually busting in 65th place. With deep stacks and some passive play, the final table took some time to finish.  Heads-Up play came down to “THE_GOLDMINE” and “daPHUNNIEman.”  GOLDMINE is a well known high-stake tournament player who has made over $340,000 on FullTilt alone.  He seemed to have total control of the final table, eventually taking down the title and just under $148,000.  This is his first major win, though he did finish 3rd in an FTOPS event last month for $44,800.

The event with the best field, as always, is the Sunday $200 re-buy on PokerStars.  The high buy-in re-buy event typically produces a 300-400 player field of the best online tournament professionals.  This week’s final table was no exception as many well-known players made appearance.  “Allingomes,” “ender555,” and “BeL0WaB0Ve” all made the final table but would bust before the tournament became final handed.  “PeachyMer,” one of the more well-known tournament professionals, took down the title and over $42,000. This win is just another big win for Peachymer as he has victories in the Monday $1k on FullTilt, a second in this very event, and a 3rd place finish for over $90,000 in a $320 buy-in two years ago.  Here’s the final hand and payouts:

One tournament which tends to rival the $200r in terms of toughness of field is the Sunday500.  The $500+$35 buy-in, $500,000 guaranteed tournament passed its guarantee after seeing quite a drop-off in attendance last week.  1,031 participants created a $515,500 prize pool with $93,614 going to first place, and eventual champion “Kenny Rap.” Well-known “QuasiFiction,” Dustin “neverwin” Wolf, and “snowking_85” all made the final table but could not pull out the victory.  Kenny Rap is no stranger to success on Stars, having won the $200r last June.  Here’s the final hand and pay outs:

The final two events of the night, as always, are the Sunday Mulligan on FullTilt and the PokerStars Sunday Second Chance.  Both tournaments start quite late and are designed to give everyone a final glimmer of hope after a long Sunday’s grind.  Making the final table of the Mulligan was FullTilt sponsored professional “Christian Kruel.”  Kruel had the chip lead for most of the time on the final table bubble and at the beginning of the final nine.  Unfortunately for Kruel he took the path of many other FT chip leaders, busting in the middle of the pack in 6th place. Heading into heads-up play “ferragamoash” and “Lefty Stacks” were set up for a tough battle. Neither player has had much success at all on FullTilt lately making this final table a welcome sight for sure.  In the end it was ferragamoash’s time to shine, as he took home the title and just over $58,000.

Finishing off the STR is the Second Chance on PokerStars.  This week a very familiar name made his way to the top of the tournament, eventually taking home the title.  Kevin “bel0wab0ve” Saul has two 6-figure scores to his name, however, this appears to be his first major win.  That is if you don’t include the $1,300,000 he took home for winning the WPT Bellagio Cup III.  During that televised event he took home the likes of Mike Matusow and Shaniac.  Saul outlasted 1514 other players earning himself just under $55,000 for first place.
