If you were keeping track of any high stakes action on Full Tilt yesterday, you would have most likely caught the epic three and a half hour long heads up battle between Phil Ivey and Tom ‘durrrr’ Dwan on Ivey’s own Thunderdome ($500/1000 Pot Limit Omaha) table. The two exchanged huge blows throughout the match which resulted in over half a million dollars being on the table at one time. In the end though, one player would hit it big and come away with over $350k in winnings.
Both players began the match by buying in for $50k and it would only take five hands for all that money to get in the middle. Dwan limped from the button only to have Ivey raise it to $3k. Dwan called and the flop came Qh Jh Ks. Ivey led out for $5k and Dwan called behind to see the Ts on the turn. Ivey bet out $13k this time, but Dwan shoved all in behind which pushed it up to $35.5k. Ivey called and turned over As 9s 5d Tc for the nut straight and a redraw to the nut flush, while Dwan turned over Ah 3c 8d 8h for a measly pair of eights that were drawing dead. The river was the Qd, but it didn’t matter as Ivey was already guaranteed to win the $87k from the pot.

Dwan reloaded back up to $50k and bled off a little over $10k in small pots before the next big one came along. Dwan raised the button to $3k and Ivey called from the big blind to see the flop of 5c 4h 7c. Ivey immediately took the lead in the hand by betting out $5k. Dwan called behind though and the turn brought the 9h. Ivey bet out $14k this time, but Dwan shoved in behind making it $17k to go for Ivey. Ivey made the call and turned over 6s Ts 3c 5h for a seven high straight. Dwan turned over 9d 8s 5d 9s for top set and a gut shot straight draw to a higher straight than Ivey’s. Dwan would need to pair the board or catch a six on the river to win the $78k pot. The 6c fell on the river which gave Dwan his higher straight and he took the $78k right out from under Ivey.

Both players now had stacks of over $70k in chips, but that would change quickly as they both would get it all in on the very next hand. Ivey raised to $3k from the button only to have Dwan repop it to $9k from the big blind. Ivey called the reraise and the flop came Qd 6c Kc. Dwan put out a continuation bet of $18k only to have Ivey reraise all in from behind him which pushed it up to $63k. Dwan called and flipped over Ks As Td 2s for top pair and a gutshot straight draw, while Ivey turned over 3d 7d Kd Qc for top two pair and a backdoor flush draw. Dwan was looking to hit an ace or a jack on the turn or river to beat Ivey’s top two. The turn brought the 3s which made no difference in the hand, and the river came the 9c which helped no one as well. Ivey’s top two was good enough to take down the biggest pot so far which totaled just under $145k.

Dwan decided to just play with the six big blinds he had remaining after the last hand, and would actually manage to double it up to $12k the very next hand. Two hands after that he doubled up once again up to $22k. Dwan’s luck would run out on the third all in however and Ivey would bust him. However, Dwan bought back in for another $50k and would try to get his money back from Ivey. Dwan managed to chip up to around $60k over a few hands before the two once again got it all in the pot. Dwan would limp from the button only to have Ivey raise it to $3k from the big blind. Dwan called the raise and the flop came Js Ah 3d. Ivey bet out $5k and Dwan called behind to see the 2h on the turn. Ivey bet out $14k this time, but Dwan shoved all in behind him making it nearly $39k more to go. Ivey called and showed Jc Qs Ad 9s for top two pair while Dwan turned over Ks 5s 2c 4s for the nut straight. Dwan would only need to dodge the jacks and aces left in the deck to take down the pot worth over $120k. However, the As fell on the river which gave Ivey a full house and yet another huge win in the match.

He would manage to win several small and medium sized pots and double his stack up to slightly over $100k, and then once again the two players would get all their chips in the middle. Dwan would raise from the button to $3k and have Ivey call from the big blind. The flop came 7s 6d 3d and Ivey would bet out $5k. Dwan however reraised to $17,200 only to have Ivey push it up once again to $57,600. Dwan then put the rest of his chips in and Ivey would call the nearly $40k more to see a showdown. Dwan flipped over 6c 9h 4c 6h for middle set, while Ivey turned over 5d 4s 6s Ts for the nut straight. Things were looking grim for Dwan as he needed to pair the board on the turn or river to win, or catch a five to tie. The turn ended the anticipation however by dropping the 3c on the board and giving Dwan the full house and the win in the pot worth just over $200k.

After the last hand, Ivey was now the one down at $50k while Dwan was sitting mightily atop a $201k stack. However with all rebuys factored in, the two were sitting right about even for the match so far. These stack sizes would once again change quickly though as the two got it all in on the very next hand. Ivey raised from the button to $3k, but Dwan would reraise to $9k from the big blind. Ivey made the call and the flop came Ks 4s 8h. Dwan led out for $7,400 only to have Ivey shove all in, pushing it up to approximately $40k. Dwan made the call and showed Kc Ah 4d Th for top and bottom pair, as well as backdoor flush and straight draws. Ivey on the other hand showed 4c Qs As 3s for bottom pair, the nut flush draw, as well as a backdoor straight draw. Dwan was right around 65% to win the hand and with the Ad on the turn all he had to do was dodge a spade on the river. The river came the Ac which gave both players full houses, however Dwan’s was larger and he took down the nearly $100k pot and was now ahead in the match for the first time so far.

It was just a short while until the two battled over another pot worth nearly $100k. Ivey raised to $3k from the button and Dwan called from the big blind to see the flop of 9d 4s Jd. Dwan checked it to Ivey who bet out $5k, however Dwan then reraised it to $21k. Ivey still thought he had the best hand though and put the rest of his stack in, which pushed it up to just over $45k. Dwan made the call and showed Td 6h 2d Th for a pair of tens and a diamond flush draw. Ivey flipped over Ac Jc 4d 8c for top and bottom pair and was a slight favorite to win over Dwan. The turn brought the 5c and was no help to either player. Dwan needed to catch a ten or a diamond on the river to rob Ivey of another pot, but the Qs fell and Ivey doubled up to nearly $100k.

Ivey called and the flop came Ac 5d Th. Dwan bet out $13,200 and Ivey called behind to see the Jh on the turn. Dwan continued to take the lead by betting out another $23,200. This time though, Ivey shoved all in behind and Dwan would be forced to call nearly $50k to see the river and showdown. His hand didn’t seem strong enough though and Dwan folded, leaving Ivey to pick up the $90k+ pot uncontested as he continued his comeback.

Ivey however liked his hand enough to raise once again to $57,600. Not to be outdone, Dwan then shoved the rest of his stack into the pot. Ivey called the extra $30,659 and showed 8d Qc 6c 4s for top two pair while Dwan showed Ah As 6h Ad for a pair of aces and the nut flush draw. The turn brought the Kc and Dwan would need to catch a king, two, ace, or heart to win the pot on the river. The 7h then came out giving Dwan his rivered flush and he dealt another blow to Ivey as he doubled up to just over $182k.

Ivey reloaded once again to $50k and the battle continued. Dwan then took a few more small pots from Ivey and eventually took what was left of his stack once again. Obviously Ivey had not had enough yet though as he then bought in for the $100k maximum in hopes of getting some of his money back from Dwan. However Dwan continued to chip away at Ivey and whittled him back down to just below $50k before they played yet another pot worth over $90k. Ivey raised to $3k from the button and Dwan called to see 4h Ts 6s come on the flop. Dwan checked to Ivey who bet out $5k, however Dwan then reraised to $21k. Ivey pushed over the top of the reraise and Dwan called just over $22k more to see the rest of the cards. Ivey turned over Js Td 7s 9d for top pair, a gutshot straight draw, and a flush draw. The heads up match between the two pretty much decided on the last hand, which was the biggest pot of the day, reaching nearly $400k. Ivey raised the button to $3k and Dwan reraised to $9k from the big blind. Ivey called and the flop came 9s 7h 4c. Dwan bet out $13,200 and Ivey reraised behind him up to $47k. Dwan then repopped it to $159k and Ivey went all in behind him for just over $25k more. Dwan called and showed 6h Ts 4d 7s for bottom two pair and a gutshot straight draw. Ivey showed Jd 4s 4h Qs for bottom set and was far ahead in the pot. The 8d on the turn was a heartbreaker for Ivey as it gave Dwan the straight, however he still had a lot of cards to hit on the river to make a full house and win. The Kh came on the river though and Dwan sealed the deal, picking up $389,741 from the pot and ending the match up $364,862.50.
