South Point Gets Historic Online Poker License
Just yesterday, the five members of the Nevada Gaming Commission unanimously agreed to give South Point Casino a license to legally operate a real-money, intrastate poker website.  The event is historic because it marks the first time that a license of this sort has ever been issued by any of America's fifty states. After awarding a license to South Point, the Nevada Gaming Commission also agreed to issue the country's second operator's license to Reno's Monarch Interactive, Inc.  Global ... [continued]

The joy of a little wager has never been met with much kindness in Nebraska. The state has a raft of anti-gambling laws that outlaw all but the smallest snippets of poker. Like most legislation in this area, Nebraska online poker and live games are not explicitly outlawed, but are considered to fall under the definition of gambling by most accounts.

These laws were first enshrined in order to combat organized crime. For that reason, the harshest penalties are saved for those who provide gambling games for others to play. Sadly this also includes home games, making a friendly game of cards specifically illegal in Nebraska.

Online Poker Nebraska players might want to partake in has not been specifically outlawed and its not clear if the standard gambling laws will apply. The issue has never come before the courts, so no real legislative decision can be reached. Still, in a state so opposed to gambling in all its forms, it seems unlikely that the local government would take a sympathetic position.

The infractions to look out for are Promoting Gambling and Possession of Gambling Records. Although the former sounds like legislation against advertisement, it actually applies to anyone who makes bets. The penalties vary depending on whether you have gambled more or less than $300 a day. That’s certainly not an unreasonable amount to wager for a Nebraska online poker player.

There are a few places to play legal live gambling, but only bingo and casino games are allowed. That leaves no real alternative for poker online Nebraska games. If you’re looking to play poker in the state, it seems like your best bet is online. Although you should be aware that you may be taking a risk with the law. Even though it is ambiguous, if the state decides you were contravening existing statutes, the penalties for gambling are fairly harsh.

The only ray of hope for the state’s poker fans is the possibility of live charity events. Once again, this isn’t really Nebraska online poker, but it is someway for players to compete in a regulated setting without worrying about breaking the law.
