With American online poker in a holding pattern the next best solution could be intrastate regulation. If this were to happen each individual state would be able to decide whether or not its residents could legally participate in online poker. While some states have shown to be for online gambling and poker there have been a few others vehemently opposed to it. A lot of states view the legalization internet poker, casinos, and racebooks as a great way to build statewide revenues. The state of Montana has a rich history including its state capital Helena which was born via a gold rush in 1864. There are some concerns heading forward about whether or not Montana Online Poker is viable. In order to be successful there will need to be a push for legislation, regulation, and enough players to support online poker rooms.
The state of Montana has produced a few famous poker players including Layne Flack, Annie Duke, and 1996 World Series of Poker Main Event winner Huck Seed. Flack was raised in Montana and both dealt and played poker in their casinos. There he met Huck Seed and the two would soon begin crushing live games in Las Vegas. Duke, who is Howard Lederer’s sister, moved to Montana in the early 1990’s and began playing the live poker room circuit with great success. To this day she is still considered one of the best female poker players of all time. With famous past residents, including Duke who had a big hand in starting the poker room Ultimate Bet, there is reason to be hopeful about the future of Montana Online Poker. However, in the April 15th crackdown online poker, two former University of Montana students were indicted for UIGEA and bank fraud violations. Brent Beckley and Scott Tom graduated from UM in 2002 and founded Absolute Poker shortly thereafter. It is uncertain how this might affect the ability to regulate Montana Online Poker; however, while these two did go to school in Montana they did not call it home.
Those looking for more optimism will be happy to hear Montana is one of the most lenient states when it comes to gambling and poker. While publicly they might portray a state against gambling, their actual laws tell a different story. There are live poker games in both homes and casinos operating under a few restrictions. Private games can run as long as the establishment does not make any profit. There can be no rake or fees charged by whoever is running the games. There are also casinos on Indian reservations that have slot games, video poker, and table games. Unfortunately there is a strange stipulation on casino poker games in that pots cannot exceed the $300 mark.
The biggest roadblock for those wanting to play Montana Online Poker is there is the state has passed legislation prohibiting internet gambling in the past. This might seem like a crushing blow to internet card players but if poker can be ruled a game of skill there might be a way around this issue. Also, as states continue to lose money in a poor economy there will be a push to find new revenue streams. Residents who want to play poker will need to stay in contact with their representatives. If intrastate legislation ever happens it will be critical that their voice be heard.
The state could also suffer from an overall lack of internet poker players. Montana ranks near the bottom of the country in total population with just under 1,000,000 residents. Unfortunately there just may not be enough action to justify poker rooms coming into the Montana Online Poker market. This will be a major problem for states in the bottom half of population figures and could be Montana’s biggest hurdle going forward. Ultimately there just might be too much going against poker players in the Treasure State.
