Maine Online Poker | Maine Poker Rooms
With the federal government recently shutting down the biggest American online poker sites a lot of eyes are now focused on intrastate poker regulation. In what could be the future of internet poker states will be allowed to decide whether or not online poker is legal. The states that want to go forward with the game will have to license and regulate the players and rooms making the game safe for all parties involved. It is unknown exactly when intrastate regulation could go into place but for a lot of states there have been both positive and negative signs towards the future on internet poker. Other states have not really proven to be leaning one way or another. This includes one of the most northern states in the country. To date there just has not been a lot of talk about Maine Online Poker.
The state of Maine does not have a rich casino and gambling history. With there are a few brick and mortar casinos, racetracks, and even gambling boats there has just always been bigger and better options in neighboring states. Maine is currently poker friendly, taking no stance against online poker and home games. While there are no poker rooms in their casinos the state has not kept players from participating in private games. The only issue with private games is, as in most states, whether or not the house is taking rake from each pot. As long as the game or location is used free of charge to the players there is nothing in Maine legislation against playing poker. How this will translate to Maine Online Poker laws is yet to be seen; however, it does appear the state’s lawmakers are not as stringently against poker as other states.
The problem with Maine Online Poker is there are just not enough residents to support internet card rooms. In order for both legislation to be passed and poker rooms to come into the market there has to be a great demand from those living in the Pine Tree State. First, there has to be pressure placed upon the lawmakers of the state to regulate and license poker rooms. From there, the card rooms themselves will need to see it as a worthy investment. Unfortunately Maine ranks in the bottom 10 in terms of total state population at just over 1,300,000 residents. This will make it tough for there to be enough players to create competition against poker rooms. An online poker in-state monopoly could lead to poor promotions, slow customer service, and other issues making Maine Online Poker a bad place to play.
Overall there are reasons to be both optimistic and pessimistic about the future of Maine Online Poker. While the state doesn’t seem to be against gambling it also does not have a history of big casinos or famous poker players. Residents are able to play poker games from the comfort of their own homes but the state does not want the house taking any rake. A lot could come down to how hard the residents push their representatives to create and pass online poker legislation if intrastate poker becomes a reality. Will there be enough players to make a difference? Could sites be financially viable in such a small state? Will the casinos attempt to shut down internet gambling? Only time will tell but for now all Maine residents can do is pressure their congressman and fight for their rights to play online poker.
