Poker players choose the amount of money they put onto the table. They cannot lose any more than the amount they have on the table. Most players buy in for the full amount, normally 100 big blinds. Others buy in for less, sometimes choosing to short stack. For those that do not know, short stacking is the act of buying in for 40 big blinds or less in hopes to double the stack against an opponent (usually a full stacked opponent). Most online short stackers buy in for 20 big blinds. After a short stack doubles up, they usually leave to try and double up at another table. The act of leaving a table to sit at another table and continue to short stack is called “ratholing.” Short stacking has its advantages and disadvantages. There is certainly a strategy that many short stackers employ at the tables. However, if you choose to short stack, be prepared to come under scrutiny from fellow poker players. Short stacking is not a very-well respected way of playing poker and some online poker rooms are even taking steps to disallow players from doing so on their tables. Short stacking may be beneficial if employed correctly. It is a great way to learn the game of Texas Holdem. Some players even play this way as their sole method of generating poker income. When a short stacked player chooses to play a hand, his entire stack usually goes into the pot preflop or on the flop. It becomes difficult for other players to play against short stacks since short stacking eliminates play on later streets. New players may benefit from this since the most important part of playing short stacked is preflop hand selection and their opponents will have no room to bluff. As players develop their postflop skills (and bankroll), they may venture into buying in for a larger amount. Many players short stack to feel a table and its players out. By buying in for a small amount, they are risking less to gain information about the table. After gaining this information, they sometimes choose to buy in for more to take advantage of their opponent’s leaks. Lastly, short stacks earn the same amount of VIP points or rakeback while risking a smaller amount. This is great for players that rely on rakeback as part of their poker winnings.

Strategy is very straightforward for short stackers. Short stackers are looking to play premium hands. These hands consist of mostly broadway cards (tens through aces). Some ace-x hands are also included. Short stackers do not play low or middle pocket pairs since these hands rely on implied odds to play well. Buying in as a short stack eliminates our (and our opponent’s) implied odds (as well as our reverse implied odds). The idea is to never play passively; if you choose to enter a hand, bet or raise. Also, short stackers should bet large and try to get their stack into the pot as quickly as possible. Many short stackers employ a “shove or fold” strategy in which they never bet or raise for less than their entire stack. Note that this strategy is rather risky. Another strategy is to get all the money in by the flop. Remember that the actual flop matters less the shorter our stack since we may bluff our opponent off many hands once the flop comes by shoving all our chips into the pot.

Short stacking can be good for poker. It introduces new players to the game that may have a shorter bankroll. When players begin their poker careers, they must first learn preflop hand selection. Playing short stacked is the perfect way for players to learn preflop hand selection. Secondly, players can choose to short stack to build a decent bankroll before playing more deepstacked poker. Lastly, any money that enters the poker economy is good for the game!

Before choosing to short stack, remember that short stacking is not a respectable method of playing poker. As a matter of facts, the majority of players are outraged by the abundance of short stackers at their tables. They believe it detracts from the skill component of poker and makes it into a contest of luck. Some players have even left their current online poker room to join others that do not allow short stackers. Keep a level head and do not let negative comments bother you. If you are showing a profit by short stacking, that is all that matters.
