In a move suspected to be driven at least in part by the decision of the Merge Gaming Network to cancel Lock Poker’s 33 event LockOps tournament schedule without explanation on April 23 of this year, Lock Poker announced last week that it is in the process of purchasing the Cake Poker Network. In a press release explaining the impending deal, Lock Poker stated:
“Lock is in the process of acquiring assets from Cake and will be re-branding the Cake Network to launch Revolution Gaming, driving technology, marketing, player rewards and implementing a richer tournament schedule. The LockPRO team will be at the foundation of these changes. They will come together and offer their recommendations on all levels, truly bringing the player into the boardroom.”
The press release also included assurances that Revolution Gaming will use Lock Poker’s independent cashier to ensure deposits and withdrawals are still processed in a timely manner, current Lock Poker players will receive increased VIP rewards, rakeback players will benefit from the more generous percentages Revolution Gaming will offer, and players’ account balances will remain intact.
For Lock Poker players, the release also clearly stated that the switchover to Revolution Gaming will be “seamless.” A software update will be performed on May 31 with Revolution Gaming going live for the first time the following day, Friday, June 1.
If Lock Poker’s claims are accurate, it currently accounts for 40% of the Merge Gaming Network’s traffic. According to PokerScout.com, Merge Gaming maintains a seven-day average of 1,640 cash game players, making it the eighth largest poker network on the Internet. PokerScout ranks the Cake Poker Network in the 22nd spot with an average of 610 players.
While it is not possible to predict how many of Lock Poker’s customers will switch to Revolution Gaming, it is possible that Lock’s departure from Merge Gaming may significantly reduce that network’s traffic as well as its ranking. If 40% of Merge Gaming’s current players follow Lock Poker to Revolution Gaming, Merge’s average number of players would fall to 984 (1,640 x .6), knocking the network to the twelfth position on PokerScout.com’s list. Of course, that would also mean Revolution Gaming, formerly known as the Cake Poker Network, would have an average of 1,266 (610 + (1,640 x .4) players and the new network would take over the ninth spot on PokerScout’s list of rankings.
Just as no one knows how many players will move to Revolution Gaming, no one knows which particular players will make the move and which ones won’t. In what must be an encouraging show of support for Lock Poker’s move, the EU Poker League issued the following statement on its website on May 7:
“We’re very excited here at the EUPL about the upcoming changes and we’re looking forward to enter the world of Revolution Gaming to bring our players the best poker league in the industry in close cooperation with our league partner. Get ready to be a part of the “New Lock” and join our players on Lock Poker / Revolution Gaming.”
Since a Revolution Gaming download is not currently available and Lock Poker has promised that the transition to its new network will be a smooth one for all of its players, the EU Poker League is encouraging people to download Lock Poker’s software to prepare for the League’s 4th season which starts in June.
For people who want to experience Revolution Gaming when it’s unveiled June 1st, it is recommended they install Lock Poker’s software on their computers. Once this is done, their Lock Poker accounts will be updated on May 31 and they will be playing on the Revolution Gaming Network the following day without having to wait for a Revolution Gaming download to be made available.
