Phil Hellmuth Jr., voted the "Best Poker Tournament Player in the World" in 1997 by his peers, is a nine-time World Series of Poker Champion and a WSOP leading money winner. His first book, Play Poker Like the Pros, was released in 2003 and has quickly become the essential text for mastering poker. A contributor to Gambling Times magazine and Card Player, he lives with his family in Northern California. Hellmuth knows his craft and has now decided to pass a little of his wisdom on to less-skilled players. As the introduction stresses, this is not a book to be perused casually; rather, you read it like a textbook, a training manual for effective poker playing, at both beginning and advanced levels. Hellmuth details card combinations and analyzes situations with the precision of a surgeon. The art of reading other players receives in-depth analysis. What's unique here is the breadth of coverage, focusing not only on traditional table play but also on online gaming, at which many high-end players now prosper. An extensive glossary makes for entertaining reading on its own, as does the impressive listing of Hellmuth's top-50 wins. A must for any gaming collection.

In Play Poker Like the Pros, poker master Phil Hellmuth, Jr., demonstrates exactly how to play and win -- even if you have never picked up a deck of cards -- the modern games of poker, including: Texas Hold'em, Omaha, Seven-Card Stud, and Razz.

Phil Hellmuth, Jr., a seven-time World Champion of Poker, presents his tournament-tested strategies to beat any type of player, including:
The Jackal (crazy and unpredictable)
The Elephant (plays too many hands)
The Mouse (plays very conservatively)
The Lion (skilled and tough to beat)

Play Poker Like the Pros begins by laying out the rules and set-up of each game and then moves on to easy-to-follow basic and advanced strategies. Hellmuth teaches exactly which hands to play, when to bluff, when to raise, and when to fold. In addition Hellmuth provides techniques for reading other players and staying cool under pressure. There are also special chapters on how to beat online poker games and an inside look at tournament play.

“Stupid and obvious advice” by iopq, 06 Sep 2005

I was reading this book because I thought he did very well in a recent tournament of BOOK AUTHORS. He played very loose and aggressive and controlled the table. He got outdrawn in a big all-in hand and lost his chipstack, but I was very impressed. I went to the bookstore and started reading his book. I already tried reading it before, but I thought it was stupid then. Not surprisingly, his book was STILL stupid! His top ten hands are stupid and don't even include suitedness. His advice for flop play is to bet/raise every time and see if someone reraises. No matter how good of a player Phil is, his book gives very little useful advice and after reading it for ten minutes I went back to reading Theory of Poker - which is boring, but at least discusses the finer theoretic points of poker.

“for beginners... but not for beginners” by wolfofruby, 15 Jul 2005

the book is not that bad but there are few problems here. The book is for beginners. It gives you the rules and a very basic strategy for starting hands and roughly the flop. But.... the book is dangerous for beginners !! Some of the advice phil gives are clearly not for Newbies and are dangerous if you don't really understand it. The holdem part is not the best part of the book also. I think that's why most people doesn't like it. Advanced players will find some good ideas maybe. Beginners will find better books to begin in the market.

I bought this book. This book now serves a purpose. I put it under one side of my couch to make it level. Other than that, good uses for this book would be, kindling or a paper weight. There are far better books than this that exist.

“Dissapointed with this book” by TheBroodHN, 21 May 2005

Lucky it was a gift! All he talks about is how he is the greatest, how his site is the best, etc, etc. B.S. I was dissapointed even tho I am a novice player with a few Freeroll wins under my belt, I can only imagine how hard cash players are laughing at this book.

How tdmlb24 can suggest there is any reasonable limit content in this book is beyond me.

An extremely good book for limit players and an OK book for no limit players. The tournament strategy section is alright but not that good. It is definitely worth reading buying for limit players.

You can find toilet paper that's both cheaper and more gentle on your ass cheeks here: http://www.drugstore.com/products/prod.a sp?pid=46187&catid=65755&trx=PLST-0-SRCH &trxp1=65755&trxp2=46187&trxp3=1&trxp4=0 &btrx=BUY-PLST-0-SRCH Unless you like reading how great Phil is along with a bunch of too tight poker advice. Top ten hands in LHE and A2 in Omaha/8, gimme a break! It's a real shame a pioneer of the hyper-aggro tournament strategy didn't go more into depth about it and instead talked about cash games where he's a known whale.

Phil..... Love him or hate him...I think you should get this book. Maybe you want it to learn his style...or ridicule his writing...it serves both camps.
