Poker has taken America by storm. But it’s not just any form of poker that has people across the country so excited — it’s no-limit hold ’em — the main event game. And now — thanks to televised tournaments — tens of thousands of new players are eager to claim their share of poker glory.

In the first volume of this series, Harrington on Hold ’em: Volume I: Strategic Play, Dan Harrington explained how to play in the early phases of tournaments, when most players at the table had plenty of chips, and the blinds and antes were small. This book, Harrington on Hold ’em: Volume II: The Endgame shows you how to play in the later phases of a tournament, when the field has been cut down, the blinds and antes are growing, and the big prize money is within sight. Harrington shows you how to make moves, handle tricky inflection point plays, and maneuver when the tournament is down to its last few players and the end is in sight. He’s also included a whole chapter on heads-up play, whose strategies up to now have been a closely-guarded secret of the game’s top masters.

Dan Harrington won the gold bracelet and the World Champion title at the $10,000 buy-in No-Limit Hold ’em Championship at the 1995 World Series of Poker. And he was the only player to make it to the final table in 2003 (field of 839) and 2004 (field of 2,576) — considered by cognoscenti to be the greatest accomplishment in WSOP history. In Harrington on Hold ’em, Harrington and two-time World Backgammon Champion Bill Robertie have written the definitive book on no-limit hold ’em for players who want to win — and win big.

FTR highly recommends Harrington on Hold'em, Volumes 1 and 2. These books are absolutely incredible for no limit Texas Holdem tournament strategies. They are both a must-have for your poker library.

This really the most professional book existing for anyone who wants to master the tournament play, and the logic desribed inside is a vert powerful tool in cash games too. Definitely the best poker book.

“Probably the best tournament books ever” by Rorgg, 03 May 2006

Limit:  1/5   No Limit:  5/5   Tournament:  5/5   Other Highlights:  5/5   Overall Rating:  5/5

Harrington and Robertie bring their acessible style from volume 1 through to a host of topics that many other poker texts ignore or gloss over. The meat of volume 2 is on short-handed and big-blind play of tournament NLHE. This makes the information perfect for home games, Sit n Go tournaments, or the closing stages of multi-table tournaments. The strategies presented give explanations for why they work when it's not immediately obvious, and codify other tactics you were probably using, but perhaps not enough. The example problems have some minor typographical issues in the first printing, but are otherwise excellent in making the reader actually think not only about what was presented, but how to use it. Since getting HoH2, I've used its lessons every time I've touched the felt, and its improved my game tremendously.

“Do you play poker tournies?” by Geoff, 23 Aug 2005

If the answer is yes, you need this book, and it's companion, Vol. 2 - The Endgame. While the principles and teachings they contain apply more specifically to multi-table tournaments, your "sit-n-go" game will improve tremendously. I think these 2 volumes are the best poker books ever written- others have employed study problems, others have been heavy on theory, and others have been easy to read. But no books aside from these two combine all three quite like Harrington and Robertie do. Not only that, but many concepts appear in print for the first time. If you don't read these books, you'll be behind the 8-ball, because any talented opponent you'll face will have studied these front and back many times.

 “Harrington on Hold'em - Volume 2” by Ten, 23 Aug 2005

I find myself continually re-reading Volume 1 of "Harrington on Hold 'em," so was ecstatic when Volume 2 was released. The most important benefit of Harrington's books is the depth with which he analyzes situational play. If you've ever found yourself feeling lost and pushed around in the latter stages of a NL Hold 'em tournament, this book is essential. This book really helped me understand just how dynamic the tournament environment is and how necessary it is to adapt your style of play. His Zone System is a brilliant way of tracking just what kind of shape you're in as the blinds continue to increase and the tables shorten. Implementing his Red Zone strategy has salvaged several tournaments for me. His chapter on heads-up play will give you a fighting chance to win it all if you've played successfully enough to get that point. Overall, Harrington's books just bring an amazing amount of clarity to a complex game. If you buy Harrington's books, don't just read them once. They bear re-reading many, many times because of the situational concepts they illustrate. These are truly masterful works that teach you how to think deeply about the game, not just play it mechanically. I can't wait for Volume 3, which is supposed to be a large collection of situations and problems in sort of a quiz format.
