Nuts (Cool):

Tables in a variety of currencies offer a lot of choice. The site is very attractive and the software has good pace and balance. It gives Europeans a chance to play at peak times without relying on US punters. It's extremely secure and cashing out is very easy.

Beats (Suck):

No micro-limit tables mean sensible beginners play elsewhere, so fewer fish than some sites. The number of full ring tables has recently been limited by the introduction of 6max tables which now make up 2/3 of the available games.

is one of the foremost names in British bookmaking, and has a very well-respected reputation in the online gaming community (the 7th most visited betting site worldwide in a recent survey). Its poker site is part of the Cryptologic network, and it offers comprehensive and US-friendly sports betting and casino games.

William Hill games are offered in £, € and $, and although most players are Europeans, US-based players are welcomed, unlike some other UK/EU sites. Cashing out seems extremely easy (I use my credit card and have no problems at all depositing or withdrawing), and the Crypto network offers guaranteed security. Neteller is supported, and a very useful feature is that you can use the chain’s betting shops as banks for withdrawing from or depositing into your account!

has a fairly customisable table, with 4-colour decks, animation options, automatic hand mucks or otherwise, and has an authentic-sounding cockney dealer voice. The look is simple, clear and classy, bet amounts etc. are obvious, and the buttons are sizeable but hard to click by accident. Playing is very straightforward, with no irritating software quirks, and the pace and flow of the cards is about right. The players, however, are a good 30% slower than on sites such as Pokerroom, Empire or Pacific, which can get tedious. There is no disconnect protection (that I’ve come across) and players who are away or disconnected are check/folded by default.

The lobby doesn’t offer much info on players, but does let you know stats about each table. The waiting list function can be told whether you are waiting for a specific table, or any table with x number of players at y limit.

The note-taking facility is useful, and Crypto supports Poker Tracker and Gametime+. The chat function is customisable, depending on the amount of detail and interaction you require. The stats button tells you useful info about your actions in the session, how many flops you’ve seen, showdowns you’ve won, when you’ve folded etc.

Hand histories can be called up at any time, but the software seems to decide how many you get to see – it can be very frustrating trying to find the right hand. Mucked cards are not revealed, either in the hand history or by Poker Ace.

The action at is good for 6Max tables. Going by tonight’s figures – a Tuesday in November – there were 6,900 active players at 10pm GMT, and 4,900 at midnight. A common occurrence is having to wait for a table during peak (early-mid evening) hours, then find yourself playing against three others on a ten-handed table as people start logging off for bed. Fans of 6max are very well catered for at all levels beyond the lowest fixed limit (£$0.25/£$0.50), but those who prefer full ring are often frustrated.

SNGs are available from £1+£0.20 to £500+£30 and are pretty well peopled, though the lower levels at least have an annoying 1,000 chip starting stack (I prefer at least 1,500). There are plenty of decent MTTs, as well as a heads up cash arena (where, as you’ll realise quickly, you quickly spend more in rake than you would in an equivalent HU tourney)

William Hill also offers 7-card stud, Omaha High and Omaha High/Low, none of which I’ve played, and are helpful to people wishing to set up private tables, although they don’t allow these at peak times.

It’s slightly like pulling teeth finding a number to call for customer support at William Hill – indeed, every time I have needed it (a period of disconnection invariably lost me actual and potential cash), I ended up emailing instead, and received a relatively prompt and relatively useful answer. I was satisfied, but not amazed, and it’s disappointing that when you click the help button, two of the three options aren’t available: the “Live Chat” facility has been disabled, and I’ve never actually seen the Host be available – the button is always greyed out with “Host unavailable”.

The lowest level limit games ($0.25/$0.50) are the weakest I’ve seen, anywhere, but the levels up to $1/$2 are very straightforward for anyone of decent ability. The no-limit games vary a good deal according to the time of day you play; peak hours, as ever, are the fishiest, weekends are pretty soft, but after 10pm GMT the worse players tend to dry up and the better players hang around, looking for more ingénues to pick off. The low-limit 6max games can be a cakewalk if you find a game without a table bully.

The lower level SNGs aren’t too bad, but even as low as £3+£0.60 you’ll get a couple of decent players. The £1 games, however, are so fishy that you’ll only ever lose thanks to a suckout.

William Hill/Crypto is my main hunting ground, but I would say that overall, at the lower limits at least, it’s slightly tougher than the US-centric sites.

offers some unique monthly bonuses where you can earn up to $525 (or currency equivalent) free every month! That is $525 without ever making another deposit! This is quite the deal, and here is how it works:

First off, you can earn $25 just for playing 5 hours in any month! At a rate of $5 per hour, at a maximum of 5 hours, you will earn $25 for doing what you would normally do. This is an extra $300 per year for doing nothing but playing poker! No catch or gimmicks, just play and get paid. This is one of the all time best offers I've seen and William Hill is best known for this from the bonus whores out there. Note, you must play at $1-$2+ limit or $.5-$1+ no-limit to qualify. So that's your first $25...

Now for the additional $500, you can earn up to $500 every month just by earning MPPs (My Poker Points). That is potentially $6300 every year without ever making another deposit at William Hill! You earn this $500 in increments of $100 with every milestone you pass in MPPs earned by 1000. So for every 1000 MPPs you collect, you earn $100, up to 5000+ MPPs for $500! This can be better than reload or deposit bonuses because all you have to do is play and you get paid!

Now earning MPPs is a simple process, based on the rake at a cash table or the fee for tournaments. If the rake is .25 - .99 you earn .25 points, and 1.00 and over is 1 point. This is the total rake from all players in the hand. The current player must have been dealt cards in this hand to accumulate My Poker Points. If you play tournaments, you receive 3 points for every $1 in fees paid.

Just a small correction, there _is_ a reload bonus on Williamhill, and most of the other Crypto sites. For William Hill, there is a monthly 100% match (up to £25) redeposit bonus. You have to clear the bonus playing raked hands (and/or poker in the casino), but it's still a good bonus.

A very solid, classic poker site with an increasing membership base (Cryptologic) and welcome £ and € tables. Not as many fish as some, but a very appealing £5/hour bonus for playing at all but the lowest-limit tables!
