VulcanPoker.com Overview
, part of the iPoker network, was launched May 2008. Because it shares its player base with other iPoker rooms such as Titan Poker, Noble Poker and VC Poker, one of the biggest things it has going for it is a large player base and consistently good traffic for their games. Even so, it has still been individually working hard to attract players.
Good traffic for an online room usually means a large variety of stakes and games to choose from. If you're looking for cash games, you can start as low as $0.01/$0.02 for No-limit (NL) Hold'em, $0.02/$0.04 for Limit (FL) Hold'em, and $0.02/$0.04 for Pot-limit (PL) Hold'em. The high stakes games go as high as $100/$200 for NL and $300/$600 for FL, but finding people to fill these tables is sometimes a challenge.
You can also find games other than Hold'em at Vulcan Poker. You can play Omaha and Omaha Hi/Lo cash games if you feel like a change and you have FL or PL to choose from there. If you like stud games, you’ll find both 7 Card Stud and 5 Card Stud.
For the tournament players, Vulcan Poker has plenty of variety. Scheduled tournaments come in 7 Card Stud, Omaha, Omaha Hi/Lo, and Hold'em. If you're new to poker and trying to start a bankroll, you'll be happy to know that there is a “Beginners Freeroll’ daily. These freerolls are available to players who have signed up within the last 90 days. If you have an established bankroll and you're looking to win huge, the buy-ins go as high as $500+$30 and there are guaranteed prize pools on a daily basis. Their most impressive guaranteed tournament occurs on Sundays, boasting a $250,000 guaranteed prize pool; you can get in on this action for $300+$20. There are many types of tournaments at Vulcan Poker including freeze outs (once you get knocked out, you can't buy back in), re-buys (if you lose all your chips during the first hour, you can buy another stack), double stacks (you start with double the normal starting stack), satellites (the prizes are seats to higher buy-in tournaments), and turbos (the blinds increase faster than in a usual tournament).
If you like smaller tournaments, head over to the Sit & Go listings. Their largest Sit & Go field is 50 players and their smallest field is 6 players. The buy-in starts as small as $0.10+$0.02, which is great if you're a tournament player with a small bankroll. Higher stakes players can find games as rich as $1,000+$50 (although finding participation for these games is sometimes a problem). Like scheduled tournaments, there are many different types of Sit & Goes. There are double stacks, turbos, super turbos, satellites and a jackpot Sit & Go. Most of the games available are NL Hold'em, but you should be able to find the occasional FL or PL Hold'em game as well. If you don't want to play Hold'em, your only other option is Omaha because Stud is not offered in the Sit & Go format.
Vulcan Poker has its own unique player reward program, awarding points for participating in real money cash and tournament games. These points can then be used for buy-ins to special points tournaments or they can be exchanged for cash during special promotions. At this time, points cannot be exchanged for any sort of merchandise.
In cash games, players receive points for raked pots as long as they were dealt a hand. Here is a chart that describes how many points are awarded per hand:
| Rake Per Hand | Points |
| $0.25 - $0.50 |
1 |
| $0.51 - $1.00 |
2 |
| $1.01 - $1.50 |
4 |
| $1.51 - $2.00 |
6 |
| $2.01 - $5.00 |
8 |
If you're a tournament player, you will receive 20 points for every $1 that you pay in tournament fees.
Vulcan Poker's Software Interface/Usability
Like most other iPoker skins, 's interface is smooth and easy to use. The first thing you see upon downloading the software is the lobby, which is well organized and easy to navigate. The option for either cash games or tournaments is on the far left hand side and then your choices for each appear in the main part of the lobby.
Selecting 'Cash Tables' will bring up a list of all the tables available and these tables can be sorted based on your preferences. For example, if you are searching for a table of a particular name, sort your tables by 'Room Name'. If you would prefer to search for tables according to their average pot sizes, click the 'Av. Pot' button. Other ways to sort the tables include: by stake; number of players; percentage of players that see the flop; number of hands played per hour; and number of players on the wait list. Filtering options include, among others, an option to hide full tables and limit table size (i.e. - filter for 6-max tables only). Highlighting a particular table will show you its players on the right side of the lobby, as well as how many chips each player has and the total dollar amount at the table.
Selecting 'Sit & Go' or 'Scheduled' will take you to a list of tournaments with similar sorting options. Tournaments can be sorted by name, type, buy-in, start time, number of players, and status (upcoming, registering, in progress, or finished). Highlighting a particular tournament will bring up its details on the right side of the lobby where you can view the tournament's status, description, starting time, buy-in, maximum players allowed, and number of players already registered. If you'd like more information, you can double click the tournament of choice and bring up the tournament lobby. This pop-up lobby is great because it's separate from the main Vulcan Poker lobby, so you can open multiple lobbies if you want to compare a couple tournaments side by side.
At the tables themselves, each player has his own built-in avatar. These avatars can be changed by going into ‘Options’ either at the table or in the lobby and, if you don't like them at all, you can turn them off. There are many other options available as well, including the choice of a 4 color deck, the ability to view your hand strength at the table, turning chat on or off, and many more.
, like the other iPoker rooms, does not have resizable tables. Instead, you have the option of either really large tables or really small ones (also known as 'mini-tables'). If you decide to use mini-tables, you will not be able to view avatars and the menu becomes a single compact button rather than several buttons all along the bottom of the window. Another disadvantage with the mini-tables is that the chat box becomes too small and you can't view the table's action in it properly. Disadvantages considered, however, some prefer the mini-tables simply because the large tables are way too big.
If you're playing a cash game you can click on an empty seat to get started, but if you're playing a tournament your seat will be chosen for you. The tables are nicely laid out and the options are easy to navigate. When it's your turn to act, the selections are clear and easy to use. There are several ways to choose your action in advance; for example, you can check the 'fold' box way before the action gets to you if you don't like your hand right off the bat. If you're playing cash and you want to add some chips to your stack, simply click the 'Get more chips' button at the bottom of the window.
If you want to see the last hand that was played in the form of an instant hand history, click 'Last hand' in the upper left corner of the window. Clicking this will bring to you a list of hands from the table you're at. Instead of a hand history of all actions by all players in chronological sequence, there is a chart that shows the hand of each player and then each player’s action on each street, also in a chart format. Then, on the bottom right side of the hand history window, the community cards are shown separately from the action of each player. If you are used to a standard hand history format (like the histories from PokerStars or Full Tilt) you might find these hand histories very cumbersome. But play a lot at this site and you’ll get used to it.
The sounds on , for the most part, are okay. There are repeated sound reminders when it's your turn and you don't act immediately. The noise it makes when it warns you (for example when you run out of time to make an action) can be annoying. Other than those two things, everything else is easy on the ears. If you really dislike any of the sounds, they are easily turned off by clicking the options button on the tables or in the lobby.
VulcanPoker.com Poker Room Action
Where cash games are concerned, you'll find several NL and FL tables available for the lower stakes, but you might have trouble finding PL tables even during peak hours. For higher stakes, it can be difficult to find tables at the highest limits of $100/$200 and $50/$100, but there are usually a few tables of $25/$50 going during high traffic hours. If you want to play Omaha or Stud there can be a long wait time for a table, depending on the type of game you want to play. PL Omaha is much more popular than FL, and 7 Card Stud has more players at its tables than 5 Card Stud does.
The participation is pretty good for the scheduled tournaments on . They have several new tournaments every hour and you should be able to find something in your buy-in of choice fairly often. At Vulcan Poker tournament fields are fairly small and this means that they are much easier to win. While the prize pools are not as big as those at a site like PokerStars, it also means that there are less people to beat and that you will cash much more often!
Vulcan Poker traffic for Sit & Go tournaments can be good depending on the buy-in you are looking for. They fill up fairly quickly at the lower limits, but even at the $50+$5 buy-in there are quite a few games going. The games are fewer above that, but still good until $500+$30. If you're hunting for a game at $500+$30 or above, you will wait a while during peak hours and even longer during non-peak hours.
Vulcan Poker Ease of Game, Ease of Making Money, Fish Rating
There was a time when the iPoker sites were known for their incredibly soft games. The games have since gotten a little bit more difficult, but the potential for making money is still there at . You won't find as many regulars as you would at, for example, PokerStars, and you'll still find several really bad players that are really good at spewing money. As long as you watch out for the few regs that are there, you'll be able to make good money at Vulcan.

Vulcan Poker.com Customer and Technical Support
The support at is very good. Although we have not used their telephone support, we have sent them emails and used their live chat option.
Within five minutes of sending them an email, you receive an automated confirmation stating that your email will be attended to shortly. A personalized reply arrived just 1.5 hours later. Not bad!
A click on the cashier in the lobby to see the deposit options brought up a live chat message from someone named Ralph. He told us that he was there to help out with our deposit. He was polite and he promptly answered any questions. He also offered us a deposit bonus, but it was just the standard offer listed on the website. The only annoying thing about the live chat window is the fact that it cannot be minimized. If you want it to go away, you must close it. This can be annoying when you're trying to look at another website because it's always in the way.
