ReeferPoker.com Overview
is one of the room skins of the fast-growing Merge Gaming Network. Although Reefer isn't necessarily the most well-known site on the network, it is undoubtedly one of the most unique. As you could probably guess, most everything at Reefer includes references to drugs, specifically marijuana. So for stoners looking for a place to play, this is it. They have an active forum, tons of promotions, and even a "420 Glossary" containing over 800 entries and definitions.
As part of Merge, Reefer Poker takes part in the network's Bad Beat Jackpot, which as of this review (2/5/09) is over $1.1 million. This large jackpot has been drawing players recently, although most of the action occurs at the $.50/$1 level (the lowest level for Bad Beat tables).
Reefer offers a wide variety of games at many different levels. Besides Texas Hold'em (Limit, No-limit, and Pot-limit) they have Omaha, Omaha Hi/Lo, 7 Card Stud and Stud Hi/Lo, Razz, 5 Card Stud and Draw, Triple Draw, Badugi, as well as mixed games.
VIP Points are the frequent player points awarded at Reefer. They are used to earn bonuses and for entry to a number of daily, weekly, and monthly freeroll tournaments. See the bonus section to learn how you earn VIP Points at Reefer Poker.
ReeferPoker.com Software Interface/Usability
's software has some really cool features that can be found at very few other poker sites. Unfortunately these features eat up a lot of memory, so you do need a pretty powerful computer or the tables will lag.
The tables themselves are very clean looking and organized, even though they have a lot of options available on the screen. These options include a chat screen, options button, stats, hand history, and re-buy button. When you chat on the table it shows as a speech bubble over the speaking player. Also there are a number of "smilies" such as happy, shocked, angry, tilt, and fish. The tables are each completely resizable and there's an option to open new tables into a 2x2 grid rather than into a new window.
There is an instant hand history button on the table screen that will open the history into a new window. The histories are easy to navigate individually but there are a few things to note. First, they are not able to be converted so you can't post them as-is on a forum or anything like that. Second, they do not work with any current trackers or HUDs. Third, the histories are not searchable so if you are looking for a specific hand from a day or two ago forget about it. So, in this sense, Reefer (and Merge) is not friendly for massive multi-tabling.
One shortfall is that although you can change your seat position (move to the bottom middle of the screen, for example) there is no way to save the preference. Every time you open a new table you have to choose your seat location again... and again… and again.
Alright, as far as the fun stuff, there are plenty of unique features here. One is the rabbit hunt option. Say you bet with a flush draw and everyone folds. Wanna see if you would have hit? Just rabbit hunt and you will see the full board. The one drawback is everyone else can see too, so they’ll know what you held. When folding, if you are the last one to act you have the option to show your cards and fold. While that's not unique what is neat is the option to show just one card. Want to show your Ace but not your deuce kicker? Go ahead and mess with your opponent’s head!
As mentioned in the overview, Reefer also has Bad Beat Bonuses. Lose the hand with quad sevens or better and you can take home a healthy share of the jackpot.
Another interesting option when choosing tables is that you can sit at a "Deal It Twice" table. If you and another player are all-in either pre-flop or on the flop, you have the option to deal the remainder of the board twice. Both players must agree, however.
ReeferPoker.com Poker Room Action
With all the tricks and gadgets available you would think that people would be flocking to play here. However that doesn't seem to be the case. It could be partly because it's not at all "grinder" friendly but, for whatever reason, Merge just doesn't have a large player base. That does not mean that it isn't worth a play.
Be aware that you won't find much action at any game other than No-Limit Hold'em. Although offers a very wide variety of games, there is very little action at Omaha and virtually none at any other game. Also don't look for much high-stakes action at Reefer. Most of the games are going to be at the $.50/$1 6-max and full-ring Hold'em levels and below. There are definitely a few tables of $1/$2 up to $3/$6 running, and the occasional $5/$10 games, but not many and not all the time.
Sit-N-Go tournaments are running consistently but, again, mostly at lower stakes and mainly just No-Limit Hold'em tournaments. Also they offer a lot of lower buy-in multi-table tournaments in the $2 - $5 range for those looking for that big score at low cost.
As far as guaranteed tournaments, a small network can be nice because there is often a large overlay due to a lack of players signing up. Their largest regular tournament is a $22,000 guarantee for $55 +$5 (with 2 re-buys and 1 add-on) every Sunday at 5 PM EST.
ReeferPoker.com's Ease of Game, Ease of Making Money, Fish Rating
The players on this network can be downright terrible. Surely there are some who make Merge their "home" and play a tight game, but for many of the players top pair is the nuts and second pair is just the second nuts. Players limp and call raises all day long and love to bluff money away.
Keep in mind though that this type of player also loves to play "trappy". It is very common to see players on limp calling with strong hands like big slick or strong pocket pairs and trying to trap on the flop. But overall you are going to find a lot of bad players, often playing above their level (Bad Beat tables are only $.50/$1 and up) and just making crazy plays and calling down super light.

Reefer Poker is definitely a good choice for those who like freeroll tournaments. They have an excellent freeroll system in which players earn their spot in daily, weekly, and monthly free tournaments by earning VIP Points. These tournaments culminate on the last Sunday of each month when players who earned at least 5,000 Comp Points during the month can play for their share of $50,000.

Also, they have a lot of promotional tourneys such as their "Staff vs Stoner" tournament with a $2.20 entry fee and bounties placed on all staffers that play. They also have weekly "Wake 'N' Bake" tournaments at 11:20 AM Eastern every weekend morning and "Weekend 420" tourneys at 4:20 PM Eastern. And yes, 11:20 Eastern is 4:20 GMT.
Reefer Poker also offers a bonus for referring your friends with their "Reefer-Your-Friends" promotion. Get $25 for each player you get to sign-up, plus entry to yet another freeroll.
Being a less traditional poker site, they offer some interesting promos that don't even require you to deposit or even play. Right now they are having a poker table design contest, which will run monthly until further notice. They supply an assortment of blank tables and are asking their users to share their best designs. Forum members will vote on their favorites and prizes will be awarded to the top three designs ($50, $30, and $20). And for all the "Bill Shakespeares" out there that want to use their paper for writing and not for "rolling doobies", you can submit an original article on pretty much anything you think fellow poker players would be interested in. It could be poker related, but doesn't have to be. If your article is accepted, Reefer will give you $20 for the effort.
You earn VIP Points by being dealt into any raked hand. The number of points you earn is solely dependent on the table stakes you are playing at. A detailed description of the number of points earned for each table stake can be found on the Reefer website.

ReeferPoker.com Customer and Technical Support
's support is adequate, but not great. Although being such a small room you wouldn't expect a huge support staff. They do answer emails quickly 24/7 and live chat help is available for real money players. They also have a FAQ to answer the most basic questions. However they don't list any phone numbers to call (but the live chat works great anyway).
