Nuts (Cool):

VERY fishy. Good client software. Good support once they transferred me to somebody that new what they were doing. Busy tables all the way from the lowest to the highest limits. Extremely loose/weak play.

Beats (Suck):

Signup process was painful and failed twice, and is badly put together with spelling mistakes which made me think twice about depositing any money. Tournament action is non existent.

was part of the Action Poker / LVFH software network, but is now part of the Microgaming/Prima Poker Network. The Prima Poker Network has an established user base with a good range of games. In addition to holdem, they offer versions of Omaha, 7 Card Stud, and 5 Card Stud. Primarily nine.com is a casino and betting company that is branching out, like many other similar companies, in to the poker area.

Deposit and withdrawal methods are fairly limited, allowing just Visa, MasterCard, FirePay, Neteller and bank draft. If you deposit by credit card, you are not allowed to make any withdrawal until at least 21 days after your initial deposit.

First off, the website. It’s awful. The signup process was painful and failed twice before working the third time. There were spelling mistakes, and when I tried to deposit money with the Neteller option, I was told there was an error and that I had to fill out a field on the form which did not exist. The exact wording was;“The City entered does not appear to be valid. City Country are required fields”. Now considering the only fields on this page were my Neteller account number, ID, and deposit amount, I was a little stuck. I was greeted with a rather interesting popup message which read (please note any spelling errors in this text are as per the message that was received – this is not mistyped!); “Please disallow your popup blocker for open our live help assitant you”. By now I was thinking, is this a real poker site or is this some 14 year old kid trying to scam me out of handing over some financial account details? Anyway, I was assured the site was real, so I contacted their support for help – read more on that later in the support section.

The Nine Poker client itself, thankfully, is much nicer than the website. The website is of course provided by 9poker whereas the client is from LVFH software. It isn’t the best client out there, but there are much worse ones around. The lobby is neat and tidy and the necessary stats are displayed against the tables, namely average pot size and player/flop percentage. The lobby view for tournaments however leaves something to be desired – it’s fairly poorly laid out, which probably goes someway to explaining why there is so little action on the tournament tables.

The table views are good but a little slow. You get the usual 3D chairs and table with text boxes showing usernames and stack sizes which flash and change as action moves round. The cards are large and clear and there is a 4 colour deck option. The pre-select buttons for action are a little different and take some getting used to. A “view stats” option gives you session statistics for the table you are sitting at, which covers all of the basics (how many times you saw the flop, where you folded and how many times, etc). In addition to the other standard buttons that you would expect to see, you have access to a live floor person 24/7 which is useful should you experience any problems during a game.

Overall, the 9Poker website starts you off on the wrong foot with a very bad image. But if you persist and make it as far as the poker client (and trust me, many people will give up before this), then it’s actually a rather good piece of software.

The cash games are very busy and there is plenty of action at all levels at all times of the day and night. The table level increments are fairly steep – just 8 levels take you from a $5 buyin to a $100 buyin – which means the players aren’t spread out as much as on other sites. No matter which level you play at, there is always a good selection of full and nearly full tables to choose from in limit, pot limit, and no limit.

The tournaments are a different story however. There seems to be little action, most likely due to the hard to follow tournament lobby. Sit and goes aren’t too bad (but not too good), but multi table scheduled tournaments seemed deserted. Like a lot of the other new up and coming sites, at the moment the action is really limited to the cash games. For tournament play, you should find another site.

After trying to make a Neteller deposit and failing, it was time to try out the live support feature. What follows is a cut and paste of the transcript – take note of the time delays which have been listed. Sensitive information has been removed.

vikki: Welcome to Client Services, how can I help you?
you: Hi, I've just opened a new account but when I try and make a deposit, it tells me "The city entered does not appear to be valid"
** (3 minute delay and I’m becoming impatient) **
you: Hello?
** (2 minute delay – I was about to give up) **
vikki: One moment please
** (1 minute delay) **
Please wait while I transfer the chat to 'Taylor'.
You are now chatting with 'Taylor'
Taylor: Can I have your username and password?
you: User : 9999Satan
you: Password : (** removed **)
Taylor: What method are you using to deposit?
you: Neteller
Taylor: What is your city?
you: Runcorn, England
Taylor: And how about your street address?
you: My full address is; ** removed **. I filled it all in on the new account form.
Taylor: So, ( ** at this point Taylor enters my full address **) is the city?
you: ** removed ** is the locale, ** removed ** is the city, ** removed ** is the county. UK is the country and ** removed ** is the zip code :)
Taylor: Cool, how much are you looking forward to deposit?
you: Just $5 to test out your site :)
Taylor: Minimum deposit is $10.
you: Ok, it said "no minimum" on the Neteller link :) I will deposit $10 :)
** (1 minute delay) **
you: Shall I go and try again?
Taylor: Ok, try again and tell me if it goes through.
you: Ok give me 1 minute :)
you: Processing now...
you: Thats done it, thanks for your help!
Taylor: You are very welcome.
you: Bye!
So we got there in the end but the delays were frustrating. I can only imagine that they were very busy and probably on the phone to one customer whilst also on live chat to me at the same time.

An email was sent to their mail support, and a reply was received approximately 1 hour later which answered the question clearly and concisely.

I would recommend sending an email rather than using the live chat unless your query is very urgent.

The players suck at . Three words. Oh - My - God. Take a look at the screenshot of the table earlier on in the review. Now blink and take another look. Yes, that is four people going all in preflop with 99, JT, KQ and A4. I didn’t have to wait hours to take that screenshot, infact 3 people did the very same thing on the next hand with even worse cards. I admit this is only a $0.02/$0.05 game, but the pot size was averaging $6 and nobody had a clue.

Not all tables are quite so fishy, but you will have a hard time finding a low level table with a player/flop percentage of LESS than 40%. Infact a quick glance shows that the first table with a statistic of lower than 40% (37% to be specific) player/flop is at $50NL, and all of the other tables at that level – and all before it – are around the 50-60% area. This does of course mean more than your fair share of bad beats and suckouts, but the advantages more than outweigh the disadvantages if you can stick it out. I managed to lose $10 on the $5NL tables fairly quickly with trips three times to people chasing inside straight draws to the river with awful odds, which they inevitably hit.

You’ve heard the saying about not tapping on the glass of the fish tank. This site is like being in the ocean with a water proof sniper rifle.

I'm pretty sure they don't have any customer service or support at all. I've sent so many emails that don't even get responded to. Too frustrating to play here. Not sure if anyone even works for this place... just a website that signs people up and then forgets about you.
