As stated earlier, Golden Riviera is part of one of the most popular networks today, Prima Poker. The most popular time for this poker room is the evenings in GMT (since some US states are restricted) where you can see an average of 20,000 players connected. At Golden Riviera you will find the following games; limit, pot-limit, and no-limit Hold’em, Omaha, Omaha Hi/Lo, 7 Card Stud, 5 Card Stud, and 5 Card Draw.
Ring games at Golden Riviera are dominated by no-limit Hold’em. You will find player’s at nearly every limit at basically anytime during the day. However, due to the large player base there always seemed to be a 5-6 tables of mid-stakes games running for Omaha, Stud, and 5 Card draw. While playing cash, you will notice several bad beat tables, along with normal tables. If you play at bad beat tables, you have a chance to change the bad beat story into a good one; and earn a nice payday. If you are playing at one of these tables and lose with four of a kind eights, or better, you and the table will win a certain percentage of the pool. Currently on May 3rd the Jackpot is at $33,000, so if you were to lose with four 8’s, you would receive approximately $12,000! (Some other rules are needed to qualify such as four players must be in the hand, you must use both hole cards, and hands must go to showdown. Rake is much higher on bad beat tables, and generally most pros try to stay away from them.)
Sit & Go tournaments at Golden Riviera Poker are quite popular. For as little as $.10, or as high as $1050 you can find a game suitable for your bankroll. You can find up to 400+ tournaments running at a time. Most player’s play $22 and lower, but I noticed many $55, $109, and even a few $1050’s running as well. For every buyin, they offer single table, multi table, heads up, and other various types of play (including normal and turbo blinds). The most unique types of SnG games are extreme stack and freerolls. Extreme stack tournaments start with more chips than normal, offering more play. Their freeroll games are very unique and I have not seem any other room offer them. For a $0 buyin, you can compete for actual money! Even though the total prize pool is only $.20, it’s much better than playing for play money. If you don’t have any money to deposit, you can start grinding these out to build a bankroll.
Multi Table Tournaments are also quite popular at Golden Riviera Poker. Every week, they offer various guaranteed tournaments on different days. All of the prize pools usually shatter the guaranteed amount. The guarantees range from $1200 ($3 buyin) up to $45,000 ($27 buyin). Their weekly tournament is every Sunday with a $200,000 guaranteed pool and a $55 buyin. They offer satellites for all of their larger tournaments, which start as low as $5.50. Golden Riviera also is not shy about giving away money in freerolls. Everyday they offer many $200 and $1000 tournaments with no buyin. These usually get a very large turnout, with around 5,000 players.
Golden Riviera Poker has a loyalty program, by earning Golden Points. While playing real money cash games (of $.50 blinds or higher), you can qualify for levels (up to level 5) by playing more raked hands each month. These golden points can be used to buyin to special tournaments, or redeemed for actual cash each month. This is like a built in rakeback program that they use to keep you at their room. If you play at least 1001 raked hands each month, you can earn up to $.33 per Golden Point you earn. The best part is you don’t even have to redeem them; they automatically are credited to your account each month.

’s lobby may seem crammed and hard to adjust to at first, but after a while you will notice it is very well organized. On the left you will find your game selection between cash and tournaments. You can also use a quick start or quick search to find games based on certain criteria, which is very useful for Sit & Go tournaments. Also in their lobby, under Menu, you can configure many options including languages, table options, sounds, and your profile. Live chat is also built right into the software and within minutes you can be talking to their support.
While playing, you will notice their tables are in 10 max full ring, 6 max shorthanded, and 2 player heads up for almost every limit they offer. Most of the traffic is playing shorthanded rather than full ring for most limits. At the tables, there are may different options you can enable to customize the table to suit you. Some of these options include; borders (borders around players, either red or green to help track action), markers (show how much money was in the pot at every street), four color deck, preferred seating (places you in the same seat at every table), and table size (large, normal, and mini view). All of these options really help when multi-tabling, which the max is 5. Player’s do not have a time bank to make decisions, and play seems much faster at Golden Riviera than other poker rooms.
Hand histories are instantly available, however there is not a built in viewer. In order to view them, you must select “game history” from the table options. This opens the game history exporter where you can select the last number of hands to save them as a text file. This is a hassle and would be better to automatically save them to your computer and review them later. One thing that was noticed was you can not see other player’s mucked hands, as you can on other poker rooms.

Golden Riviera's Ease of Game, Ease of Making Money, Fish Rating
In my experience, Golden Riviera seemed to have an average number of fish compared to most poker rooms. At the mid-stake level, there were always a few very to easy spot whales, but also noticed a few solid multi-tablers who I tried to stay away from. At the low and micro limits, you can expect and juicy game with players that have no comprehension of the game at all. |
