Nuts (Cool): |
|
Nice client software which has been updated! Offers very unique games not seen on any other poker rooms. Excellent technical support. Very nice buddy features. Action has been steadily growing. |
|
Beats (Suck): |
|
Low user base (which has been growing). Low tournament traffic (buyins not very high and usually only about 100 players max will play). Traffic on non-Holdem games is basically zero. |

Action Poker.com Review
is owned and operated by LasVegasFromHome.com Entertainment Inc. (LVFH), “a publicly traded company dedicated to producing the finest online multiplayer gaming technology” (quoted from their website). It is a fairly new site, and a very small site. However, it is on the Action Poker Network which is somewhat well known in the poker community.
We have reviews for other poker rooms on the Action Poker Room Network including
Tiger Gaming,
and
Island Poker.
The first thing you will probably notice when you load up Action Poker is the games that are offered. You will find the standard NL/PL/Limit Hold'em, Omaha, and Limit Stud/Stud Hi/Lo. However, they also have a variety of very rare games that I have not seen offered anywhere else including, Guts, Big2, Pan, and Chinese (aka 13 Card). Imagine playing Chinese Poker with your buddies online from your own home! For those unfamiliar with these very sick games, they have a complete "how to" section on their website. They can be very fun to learn to play and can be a nice break from Hold'em.
As for the games offered, you will still find most action huddled around the NLHE tables; specifically the low-mid stake range. There are always many 25, 50 and 100nl tables going at most times during the day, and few higher stakes. If you're in for nosebleed stakes, Action Poker probably isn't for you.
Also, although the games offered are really interesting and unique, it is really hard to find a game outside of no limit hold'em.
Tournaments aren't exactly the bread and butter of Action Poker. In fact, they have one of the weakest turnouts of any online site thus far. However, they are still building up their player base and are increasing their turnout on a regular basis. Their sit and go's range from $1 up to $500, but don't except to see much action past the $50 level. As for MTTs, you're lucky to get a tournament with over 100 participants. Also, the average buyin you will see is $5 - $10, with not much to offer higher than that. They do have a $25k guaranteed monthly tournament with $100 + $8 buyin, which can have some nice overlays.
Action Poker also runs some nice freerolls, which get A LOT of participation. It's amazing the large amounts of people who will play for free opposed to their other real money tournaments! There are many offered per day, and there are at least $5000 worth every month! Usually these freerolls bring out 1500+ players, so it's a pretty big field, but a nice place to start if you don't have money to deposit.
Playing at you will earn Player Option Points (POP). POP are earned by paying rake at cash tables or by tournament fees. For every 10 cents in rake you pay, you earn 1 POP and $1 in tournament fees earns you 10 POP. There are a few things you can do with your POPs, including exchanging them for real money. The currently largest exchange you can do it 20,000 POPs for $100, which after doing math equals out to about $2000 in rake for $100; which might not seem like much but is better than nothing! There are also special tournaments you can enter with just POPs.

Action Poker.com Software Interface/Usability
Upon loading up , there is an annoying pop up box alerting you of current offers and promotions, accompanied by a “windows error” sound, so the first few times you load the software you think it’s crashed or broken. You cannot disable these popup windows so you have to get used to them. These can become very annoying and I wish there was an option to disable (you can get up to 3 for the same tournament!)
Once you get logged in and connected to the client, it is actually very nice. The tabs let you select your game type and let you display either fixed limit or pot/no limit tables – to save you having to scroll through games that you aren’t interested in. The lobby is neatly laid out and displays the usual table statistics such as pot size and number of players. Also displayed are the number of players currently online and tables currently active. I really like the overall layout of the lobby and how the tabs are organized, clicking on a specific category will expand it down. Very easy to find the game and limit that you need. However, I think it would be nice if you could sort between NL, PL, and Limit; instead it just lists them all under Texas Hold'em - Real money.
A lot of the functions, especially those related to support or cashier, shoot you off to a website. I personally like to have all of the functionality neatly packaged in the poker client rather than going off to a website, but it’s not the end of the world.
The table view is nicely done, no flashy graphics but very clear good quality cards and animations. You have the option to select a 4 color deck, and also switch the cards from the “poker style” (large card value) to “classic style” which makes the playing cards look like a regular pack of cards. The classic style is in fact very easy on the eye and I found myself using this option whilst playing. You can alter the speed of the animations, and setting this on to the highest value made the chip and card movements extremely smooth even when quad tabling. The ability to slow the animation right down would be very useful for anybody running on a slow PC.
The buddy list is great – it allows you to chat to any online buddies and immediately jump to any tables that they are playing on, so it is equally as useful as a fish finder.
Some Major disappointments are the fact that you can not save Hand History files onto your PC. This is something that I consider an absolutely necessity for online rooms today and the fact that they do not have this option makes it less likely for me to want to play there. You can obtain hand histories manually through the lobby, but who wants to do that??

ActionPoker.com Poker Room Action
The Action Poker room doesn't really live up to its name as it is one of the smaller rooms around at the moment. The average number of players seen online across various times of the day was only around 2,000. At one point it was below 800. The highest it reached even at peak times was 2,200, and a lot of these players are eithe ridle or sitting at the play money tables.
Tournament action is almost non existent. I sat down at two empty sit and go’s, and half an hour later only one other player had joined me on one of the games, and I sat there by myself on the other. I guess there are some hardcore actionpoker followers trying to get the tournament section going, but unless the user base increases ten fold over night, avoid this site for tournament play.
Ring games are obviously not overly crowded either due to the average 2,000 active players, and those few players that are on the site are spread across the limits fairly evenly. You will struggle to find more than two full tables at any particular limit, so if you for example like to quad table $5nl, you’ll find yourself sitting on your own or heads up on at least two of those.

Action Poker.com Customer and Technical Support
All support is handled through the website. They offer a good range of either Email support, live chat (which was promptly answered), or the ability to request a telephone callback.
An email was sent to them, and a reply was received in less than half an hour with a concise accurate answer. Top marks.
I next tried the live support help - the transcript of which is shown below. It took less than 10 seconds for them to answer my request for help. I was really satisfied with my experience and the representative was quick to answer all questions I had about the poker room. If you need to contact them, I suggest live chat, but their E-mail is also pretty speedy.

Action Poker's Ease of Game, Ease of Making Money, Fish Rating
The level of play at
is fairly low, but also extremely slow. Many players seem to take up a good proportion of their allotted time to make decisions. If you find a full table, by the time you have started to learn your opponents, you find the table is breaking up and you need to find another one – which you sometimes cannot do. It’s virtually impossible to play more than one table at a time, not due to client restrictions, but simply because there isn’t enough traffic to keep multiple tables full for any long period of time.
The games that I did sit on were average – there were some good players, and some awful players, but it’s certainly not a fish tank or rock garden.

Action Poker.com Bonuses and Promotions
offers a 100% first deposit bonus, with a minimum of $10 and a maximum which is only limited based on your deposit type (up to $2500 by Neteller for example) – however you only have 45 days to clear any bonus, which you do by earning “POPs” (Player Option Points). You need to earn 12 POPs for every $1 of bonus. You earn 1 POP for every $0.10 of rake that you pay, and you do not earn points for pots where you do not personally contribute to the rake. You also earn 10 POPs for every $1 in entry fees paid for tournaments.
Example:
If 5 people are playing at a No-Limit $10 Hold'Em table and each person contributes to the pot evenly and the total pot is $50, then each player would have contributed $10 to the pot. Rake is then calculated at 5% of this so each person would have put 50 cents into the rake. You earn 1 POP per 10 cents in the rake therefore 50 cents into the rake would earn you 5 POP.
The other catch is that no partial bonuses are paid. If you deposit $2500, you need to earn 30000 POPs within 45 days to clear the bonus. Earn 29999, and hit day 46, and you lose the whole of the bonus. So although the upper limit on the match bonus can be very high based on your deposit type, you have to carefully calculate realistically how many points you will be able to earn within 45 days otherwise you’ll lose it all. And considering the low level of traffic on the site, I think most people would struggle to even clear the minimum $10 deposit…
