Theres an almost unavoidable irony in embarking upon its first full year sans the American market with a campaign slogan that borrows from the quintessential American football emblemWe Are Penn State, We Are Marshall, heck, theres even an American insurance agency thats thrown their hat into the We Are {blank} ring. In spite of this, the two TV advertisements PokerStars released are entirely extra-American, totally meta-other-sports-narratives. The commercials are poker.

Though a minute is double the length of a traditional commercial, the pacing of these ads feel much more like a movie trailer in fast forward than a commercial in slow motion. Jammed into that minute is all the plot and characters and memeology of the game of poker. The synopsis of a game includes the most famous member of the PokerStars team, Daniel Negreanu; the sex appeal of their team, Vanessa Rousso; unknown players; the audience; aggression; bets, raises, re-raises and all ins; calculating; the climax of a pivotal river card. Maybe the only character in the cast of poker thats left out is the cards themselves. Its as though this emphasizes that the ad is not the story of any one hand, any one bad beat, any one all inthis is poker: in its entirety, in its naked intrinsics independent of cards.

The ads are each a mosaic of imagery, albeit some of the most literal imagery youll see: it demonstrates stress by literally showing a businessman ensnared by a bubble, demonstrates the release thereof by literally showing the bubble burst; it illustrates hair-raising excitement by literally depicting hairs standing on end, illustrates heart pounding by literally showing a heart pound. Just for good measure, bulls and sky diving and parades and snakes and whips that look like snakes are sprinkled in, all drawing on their most blunt metonymy.
