Wow, I went super weak/passive there. Standard resteal v's Kevsters range on hand 92, but it took all 25 hands before I did a positional steal. I think some of this was due to Kevster and mxiu in particular getting aggressive, and having enough of a stack to not be in any hurry, so waiting for them to inevitably butt heads. Also Gator hanging around somewhat short for a while and making some moves. That said, I dont think I realised just how quiet I played this section, so poor observationing by myself.

Others
Kevster - completing way too often man. Hand 82 - "make a mental not of this", Hand 94 - you do it again with a crap hand. Wat??

Mxiu - think you get a bit aggressive, but nothing too out of line. Hand 78 - "2:1 on his push.. didn’t believe I was dominated too often here. Willing to flip with shortie." - I really think you just make shit up to justify your play sometimes. Gator isnt so short he's doing this with crap, so you're dominated something like half the time here I'd say. Not saying its a bad call, but thats just a strange comment to make.

Gator - Think you played this section really solid man.
Just playing to improve.

This is interesting. I don't hate my play here but perhaps I should.

In the Heads Up section, Harrington says something along the lines of never fold because you always have the odds to call with ATC. He also says that this applies in certain pseudo HU situations such as blind versus blind when it's folded around. As a result this is often how I play it as I've benefited a ton from his heads up notes (Vol II I think).

Are you saying "this is bad in an SNG" or "this is bad in this SNG".

Well, given my aggression I figure he's doing this with almost any Ace/PP. I make this call all day. I don't think I'm dominated enough to ever warrant a fold given my image.

Kevster - I make a comment in the HU portion, but that really only works if the opposition is passive enough to let you. Against aggressive opponents you'll get raised too often for it to be profitable. Lots of good stuff in HoH, and sometimes its worth trying this once or twice to see how an opp reacts, or to setup a trap, but you just do it way too often with crap hands you'll need to let go of.


mxiu - like I say I havnt run the odds. Getting 2:1 it may well be a call, but your 'read' here, and I think the hand when kmind got eliminated just dont make sense and it sounds like you're trying to justify to yourself plays that you know arent very good. For instance when Gator reraises you he does this "with almost any Ace/PP" but when kmind raises you're blind steal I think your comment was "he almost never has a PP here". Contradictory reads for almost identical situations which just happen to suit the play you want to make (or suit your hole cards) each time.
Just playing to improve.

 I was actually pretty surprised at how tight everyone got. Its the bubble and everyone has medium sized stacks...perfect time to just relentlessly steal.

AT/99 hand - I don't think the call is bad...Gator is a tight player but able to adjust, so I don't think its a stretch to assume he could do this with A6+, 22+ KQ+ or something

Comment about heads up - Harringtons advice about completing ATC was meant for heads up tournament play...not blind vs blind sit-n-go play. Completing with ATC is really easily exploited and a great way to lose your stack on the bubble. Even if you are heads up in a sng I think completing ATC is a leak unless both players have deep 40BB+ stacks

All of the folding in this section got me thinking last night about steals during this phase of a tourney.

Questions that I would like everyone to think about/answer include:

Do you have a hand requirement for steals or are you of the "cards don't necessarily matter" mindset?

How does your starting hand range get affected based on stack sizes at the table, both yours and the other players'.

What criteria do you use to determine if a table is "tight or loose" and how tight does a table need to be for you to loosen up your starting ranges.


These are the types of conversations we need to have when discussing this stage of the SNG experiments. I am off to the beach right now (on vacation with the family) but will put some thought to it and post some more either later tonight or tomorrow.

Almost impossible to answer in enough detail, but I'll lay out some thoughts. I'm assuming you're just talking about this stage of the tournament.

Very player/table specific as to whether I steal with junk or cards with some value. For instance here we have two aggressive players raising probably too many hands, and I have a decent sized stack. I'm not in any hurry to get anywhere, and theres a fair chance these guys will get into it v's each other so I take a more passive approach (probably a bit too passive in this case, but I still think its a fair approach in general in this spot). If you look at the two hands I did steal with, they both have decent post flop potential, which is what I'm looking for since if I get called I could be in some trouble. Against players who are too tight I'll raise with ATC, some people just keep folding. If I'm on the bubble with 1 aggressive player and two weak players, I'll play back strong at the aggressive guy a couple of times. I want to send a message that theres two weak players he can pick on, but he should stay away from me. There have been some bubbles I'll raise like 75% of hands or something (very rare, but can happen).

I'm looking to adjust as the game goes though. In the next 25 hands that get posted (hint Taipan ), you should see me drastically change things up as the table dynamic changes. Likewise later on when ante's come in I change things up yet again. I'm looking for edges to push, and beyond that just keeping out of trouble.

Lastly of course, my stack size makes a big difference. If I'm short (compared to blinds) I'm pushing thinner edges. If I'm bigstacked I'm probably looking to bully the table. Standard stuff like that.

One important thing to note here in this particular game as an example of a situation some players get wrong, is that whilst I'm the short stack on the table, I'm not actually shortstacked! People get this wrong a lot. They compare their stack to the rest of the table and think "I've got the least chips, I need to do something quick!" when in fact they often have a healthy stack compared to the blinds with plenty of time to play some poker.

here's an example where cards dont matter to me. regardless of how the blinds play, their calling range is incredibly tight

Blinds 100/200

UTG (1000) (folds)
Button (Hero - 4200) (raises ATC)
SB (2800)
BB (3000)

One thing I never try to do in late-game: raise and fold to a shove. So if theres smallish stacks in the blinds, I usually tighten up a little...unless I know its correct to shove close to ATC
