    Default Pokerstars 27 seater $5 SNG - out on bubble 5 times in a row

    Hi all,

    This is my first post to this great site, and I'm still a relative poker fledgling. Signed up to Pokerstars yesterday, and have mainly been playing the $5 SNG's - both the 2 and 3 table versions. However, for 5 tournies solid now, I've gone out on the bubble. In my most recent game, I went from chip leader to out of the game in about 5 mins. I'm generally happy with my play earlier on in the game, but something is obviously wrong with my later game strategy.

    I know I made a couple of bad plays toward the end, but if some kind soul out there has the time and inclination to analyse the tourny for me, I'd be really grateful. I've really got to start hitting the money on these tournies. I'm actually doing fairly OK at not getting demoralised about busting out on the bubble, but it IS apparent my game still needs work.

    ANY criticism at all of my play would be most welcome, although I'd ask the seasoned players to go a little easy on my stupid plays

    Anyway, in all its tragic glory, here is the last SNG I played. Thanks for taking the time to read this very LONG post. I have edited out irrelevant hands to hopefully make for easier reading. Please note from hand 69 onwards I have numbered them consecutively, although actual hands are missing. This was simply because the hand history email clipped before the end of the tourny, so I had to request the extra hands and paste them in manually.

    Here's my take on the hands as your fall happened.



    Hand 71, you have a weak top pair, bet it out or check/fold it down. Don't just keep calling with it.

    Hand 73, Its best not to miraise. If you're going to raise make it 3BB, then if your KJ gets reraised you can let it go.

    74- Unless the SB is likely to be trapping or is very tight, Ax should be raised in this situation. You've got position for the rest of the hand, make him pay to play.

    78-the guy minraises and the other guy just calls. If this guy has been minraising as his usual pre flop raise and the caller isn't a rock, I'd strongly consider going all in here. You're ahead of many more hands then you're behind in this situation. This seems like a push or fold preflop situation, calling just seems wrong.


    Even playing well you'll bust on the bubble often (can't count how many times i'v bust with both of us all in and me with a better A). Hopefully a few people reply as i'm curious on if my suggestions are reasonable

    I preface all of this by saying that I'm not much more experienced than you, so please take these comments with that in mind! Overall though, I think your play is good and aggressive, which works very well against the weak/tight players you get at the $5 level (which is also where I play). Perhaps you're just a little too loose in the early stages – in this game it seems to have worked for you but over the long run it can cost you a lot of chips.

    Also, maybe consider playing the 1-table SnGs for a better chance to get into the money than the 3-tables (3/9 paid in the 1-tables compared to 5/27 in the 3-tables).

    Some specific comments on the hands (like CFANG, I hope the more experienced players reply so I can see whether I’m wrong):

    Hand 25 - I would fold this in response to the 3x BB raise. A2o is pretty much like playing a single ace since you don't have a kicker. Also, you're out of position for the rest of the hand.

    Hand 28 - At this stage of the tourney I would probably also KTo pre-flop given that Topdog called UTG. I find that KT too often makes the second-best hand unless you hit the flop hard. Later on it is a good blind steal hand because it plays OK if you get called

    Hand 33 - Others may disagree, but unless you put BruceLeroy on a blind steal, I don't like reraising with AK as this often results in the original raiser pushing all-in on you in which case you've got a difficult decision to make. Better to see the flop and bet whether you hit or miss

    Hand 46 - I would fold JTo to the all-in from the short stack here, I just don't think it's strong enough. Better to let him take 225 in blinds rather than give him another 455 chips.

    Hand 55 - Probably fold T8o pre-flop or raise to try to steal the blinds. I can't believe how passive your opponents are!

    Hand 70 - Raise AJo pre-flop unless you're trying to mix up your play. You're the big stack, keep on putting pressure on your opponents! A raise may also have gotten rid of the crap that the flop probably hit

    Hand 71 - I wouldn't try to slowplay top pair no kicker here - bet half the pot, this will at least help you to figure out where you stand. When you rep the A by reraising, I would have reraised to 1200 rather than 1600 – if he’s also trying to rep the A with his original bet that’s enough to make him fold (it’s more than half of his remaining stack). Definitely don’t call the all-in, with this sequence of betting he’s got the A.

    Hand 74 – As CFANG wrote, definitely raise pre-flop with A8o here.

    Hand 78 – Agree with CFANG, push with AJo here. You can pick up a lot of scared money on the bubble – I think Papa would have folded his A5o, don’t know about Slimthug but there’s a good chance he would have too. You're getting short stacked here relative to the blinds and antes, make a move! As played, on the turn I would guess I’m beaten here after Slimthug called your big flop bet, but it’s a difficult one because you’re getting better than 10:1 on your money to call.

    That was one of the most passive games I've ever played in, which is why I was as loose as I was at the outset. I mean people were literally minraising preflop, and making bets of $30 into a $450 pot on the flop and turn. If someone DID have a hand preflop, in the early levels, they were really overbetting, like 20x BB. I agree fully regarding hand 78. With what I was holding, and given my position in the game, a much stronger bet would have been in order here. Guess I was just suffering from "bubble fear" - something I've been trying to overcome. I finally burst the bubble on a 3 tabler, and placed 4th. My next goal is to win.

    Taipan, I took your advice and tried the 1 table $5 SNGs. Played 4 so far, placed 1st in 3 of them. Does the quality of play drastically improve on the $10 tables? If not, there might be some value in me trying these out. However, with a current bankroll of $130, I want to avoid playing outside of sensible limits, as I wish to practise good bankroll management from now on (something I learned from this site, and something that was sorely lacking from my game previously)

    Congratulations on your wins! Personally I have not played on the $10+$1 single tables but others on this site say that the quality of play isn't that much different. I've watched a friend play on a $50+$5 table and it was like night and day...

    My BR is roughly the same as yours but I want to make sure that I can consistently beat the $5 level (over say 100 tourneys) before I move up. Like yourself I've had three wins recently but this could easily just be positive variance. That said, you're not THAT under bankrolled for the $10 level, maybe try a few and if your BR drops to $100, move back to the $5 level.

    Agreed that 4 games is barely enough to make any kind of qualitative judgement of my success at those stakes. I think for now I will stick to the $5 games, as a few failed attempts at the $10 stakes is going to eat into my BR more than I might be comfortable with.

    What I really want to do though, is develop my 3 table strategy at the same stakes, because the payout is over double that of a 1 table tourny. Of course, I have to wade through three times the number of players to get there. Still, if I confine myself to 8 opponents, I think I'm going to be limiting my scope for developing tourny technique.
