Default OT: The Roll and being a BR nit (zero content)

So my SNG roll (started from fpps and by a generous FTR'r who gave me 100% $ in exchange for $W. Thank you, you know who you are!) is now at $768. (Also have $150 on betfair earmarked for licensing my copy of WIZ)

I'm playing the $6.50s and I'm crushing them, even when I feel I've played bad, and even though I'm not running well atm.

My goal is to get enough to pay for a decent computer, get it, and go multi-bot style. To play like 16+ tables I think you need 100BIs, so by that standard I'm not ready to move up. Thing is I can only play 6 tables until new PC so have been wondering about moving up for a bit. But then, I'm more comfortable learning in the $6.50s, ironing out ICM leaks whilst still increasing the roll gradually.

Anyway this is turning into a zero content ramble. I guess the thing is I'm unsure if I have a good plan and wanted opinions.

Goal is to play 16+ tables (as many as I can manage) to up $$/hr and fpps. To do that I need 2 things.

    1. Great ICM game.
    2. New PC/laptop.

I seriously think that the $6.50s are the optimal place to work on 1. I already beat the games, I have wiz and am studying, and I can get 12-18 games a night in 6-tabling without worrying about the money and the effect on roll.

I'm just not sure that the $16s wouldn't help me get to 2 faster (dropping 2 tables), after which I'd go back to the $6.50s and 1.

Anyone have any thoughts? If not about my weird BR management then about the type of computer I should get and how much I'll need!

With that roll, I'd move up to the 16s. It will hopefully build your roll faster and help you gauge where you are at with your ICM game as well. If you still aren't that confident yet, maybe try mixing in the occasional $16 every once in awhile. To me the more tables you play at once, the better your ICM or mathematical game has to be because your decisions have to be more automatic or bot-like because you have so many of them.

As for your computer, I assume you are playing on a laptop and will be purchasing a desktop? If you want a desktop you will also need a monitor and a quick look over at dell I can see some in the $600 range. I personally build mine from scratch and order parts from newegg and other sites but I'd reserve at least that much for a new computer + monitor. Others can elaborate if they know better places to purchase "fully" stocked computers. As long as your video card and monitor output 1600x1200 resolution you should be fine since whatever you seem to be running from reading your other posts is pretty ancient.

Other than that, I think your plan is solid. I'd run your roll up to 1k+, buy a new computer, then drop back into the 6.50's or keep grinding whatever you are comfortable with and *slowly* add tables to find out where your hourly takes a sharp dip. Hope that helps some.

From our previous discussion (whether to be lag or tag in late phase) it seems that you are too good to play 6.5 dollars.

I know how it is to be a bankroll nit. I had 300 buy ins for my level..., but I have realized that I wasted a lot of time grinding a decent bankroll. If I could start all over I would deposit 5K and start at NL 100.

You can check my stats at sharkscope: saftogbrus on pokerroom and carbonpoker.

P.S Average ROI on carbon is low because I used to play a lot of 1 dollar sngs when to stone to play cash game. Sng was always my fun game.

I think if you search in the commune you'll find several good PC spec threads, or create one yourself.

what are your general poker goals? unless it's to be an SNG grinder this is a poor development plan.

If it is to be an SNG grinder, I would move up to the 16s and not withdraw the PC money until you have enough to stay there playing 6 tables, then add tables after the PC as you feel OK with your roll size. And never drop back down unless the ROI difference is really huge. I guess you lose a little learning in volume but I think you'll make up for it in quality since you're playing less tables. ICM is of course the most important for SNG volume guys but gaining edges in the first couple levels will help a lot as you continue to move up and more of the table understands at least basic push/fold pretty well.

Also Tai always says the 16s have all the grinders so I'd be wanting to move up from there ASAP. So I'd probably chill with the 6 tables until the 20s, although I can't play more than 8 anyway so that may skew my perspective.

I would worry that you'll just have to get over the new limit jitters twice which seems silly when you'll already be up there once. Also the mind set of "I'm playing over my limit (I can't wait to stop)" may hurt you during move up 1, or after you move back down - "this will be easy!".

My poker goals are to be an SNG grinder, but to be a bloody good one.

I found over 50k hands at 10NL, 25NL, 50NL, 100NL that cash just isn't for me. Mentally I can't take the swings. I don't think I'm good enough to be anything more than someone who sits and profits marginally out of 100NL, and I just can't stand it. I also think you have to put in a lot more hours to be profitable.

Mtts I like but have no time for with work and the wife. I did play them for a while but found me stuck deep at 3am, with a 6am alarm call, and it started sucking my life away.

SNGs just suit me and my lifestyle. I love the rush of winning, and the mathematical side is perfect for someone like me obsessed with decision theory. Lastly I can fire up a set (or two) and they have a finish time. My session can be 1-2 hours and I have plenty of time for home life. I can also review and *know* where my big mistakes were. I found too many open questions and difficult decisions playing cash games and when you spend 9 hrs a day researching mathematics, the last thing you need is your hobbies to make your head hurt!

Thanks for the advice, I think I need to take a harder look at some $16s

Funny, the reasons I stuck with SNGs are very similar to the reasons that you mentioned above.

That said, with your roll and (more importantly) your skills, I would definitely move up to the $16s. drmcboy is right that because it's the best deal on the net, you do get a lot of 2+2-type super multitabler grinder types, but if you pick your times carefully you can avoid them, and even if you can't there are still plenty of idiots to go around. I still find enough idiots at the $27s and $38s and if they are at the higher levels, they are definitely there at the $16s.

I also agree with drmcboy about the PC, move up to the $16s and cash out when you have enough in your roll to both keep playing the $16s and cash out enough for a decent computer.
