At FT's I have mixed results. At times focusing on table image and using it to my advangate, using player stats to guide me, etc. But there are spots where it seems that loose aggression will pay off, but fails to give me a top 3 finish. And there are times where tight play is working great for a long time and then just falls apart.

When all is considered it seems that a lot can be accomplished at a FT when you widen your range when open raising in a decent position. Does anyone agree or disagree? Those that would agree, do you have a range, say in MP or LP, that you like to open raise with? How wide is too wide?
I finally figured out my problem, my logic is flawed.

Your question may be better answered in the MTT forum, would you like me to move it? The SNG forum is strictly speaking for 1-2 table SNGs.

Your first paragraph is on the right track. You want to be able to change gears but let the opponents at your final table dictate how you play. If they are tight you become loose, if they are loose you have to tighten up. There is no such thing as too wide, just make sure you have a plan for your hand.
