Hey guys! Found this site a few weeks ago and really have enjoyed the commentary. I have been playing no limit for a few months and have really been enjoying it. Had a few bad beats last night would love your thoughts. This is a live game 8 people at the table.

1. I'm small blind call to the big which is a total of 100. Two other callers after me. Flop comes J 8 6. I've got J 5. I checked it guy on the button raises two hundred. I laid it down, he ended up winning with a pair of nines on 4th street. Was this way to tight? I also only had about 800 in chips.

2. Next bad beat, blinds are still 50/100 I call with one other guy. I have J 8. Flop comes 9 9 3. I check to him. He raises 250. I called and raised him another 250. I guess this is your standard check raise should I have bet more to try and get him out? He ended up having a 9 with a rag kicker.

Play Hand #1 the way you played Hand #2 (fold) and play Hand #2 the way you played Hand #1 (bet or check-raise to see where you stand in the hand).

In Hand#1 you could have bet at teh top pair to see where you stand.

Tommy,

What was the structure of this tournament? How many chips did everyone start with, what did the blinds start at, and how often/how much do the blinds increase?

There were 24 players, 3 tables $40 buy in for 1000 in chips, Blinds started at 10/20 and went up every 20 minutes. 10/20 25/50 50/100 100/200. Last three at each table make the final table where blinds start over at 50/100. I was 4th at my table, had to go all in at the end as I was the big blind(200) and had maybe another two hundred left. Got beat by a rag straight, I had J high.

Let me add that in Hand #1 I'm not even sure that I complete the SB with J5 (probably not even if it was suited)

Also, in Hand#2, was your J8 suited or not? If not, I fold this hand (Assuming you weren't on the blinds which is unclear from your post).

Lastly, I wouldn't constitute either of these hands as a bad beat.

First hand was suited(spades), with a rainbow flop w/ 1 spade. I was more worried about getting outkicked in this hand.

Second had was not suited, I was the big blind. however this was the same guy who I folded to on the first hand. Basically I thought he was trying to buy the pot again, thats why I check raised him.

On the first hand, you should've made this decision preflop. If you're going to complete the blind, you have to be willing to bet if you hit top pair (which was pretty lucky itself). If you weren't willing to do this, why complete the blind? Were you expecting to hit two pair?

The BB was an 8th of your stack, so I may have pushed in here. More likely I would've checked, and seen how hard the other players bet the pot. If I don't think they have top pair, then I'd shove in.

On the second hand, if you want to take a stab at the pot, I'd lead out and bet. If you're raised, get out. You were short stacked, so it'd be good if you didn't lose as much money by bluffing and then folding than you do checking, and then raising, and then folding. And no, you didn't need to bluff more (preferably less, by betting first). He had a 9, so he was calling anything. If he didn't have a 9, that bet of yours would've scared him out with anything less than a high pocket pair.

Yeah it was definitley a bad lay down. Unfortunatley I had no idea who this guy was and was afraid of getting outkicked. Thx for the insight!
