Default main strategy differences between SNG's and MTT's?

I just started playing in a few MTT's and have noticed that unless I pick up some big hands (and get action on them) early that I stay in the mid pack level.

Are there any major strategy differences between SNG's and MTT's? Do you open up your starting requirements some (in position of course) to try and win some well disguised hands? Do you play more aggressively or less aggressively early in a MTT than a SNG?

    Thoughts?

    SNG - ITM is god.

MTT - top 3(ish) places are all that matters.

Does that mean you should try harder at accumulating chips early in a MTT?

Lately, I think yes. You need all the chips, so why not start getting them now. Plus there is something to be said for going big in the first hour or firing up another one.

The other side would be that it only takes 2-3 doubles to go from 1/2 average stack to Really Really nice stack, so you should wait, try and stay around with a decent stack and hope the rush comes.

For sure, you should be gambling with a short stack, much more than you would in an SNG, since again ITM really isn't worth it. The question is how to treat medium and large stacks early.

Every MTT (online) eventually becomes an AI fest. You must be lucky to win, but if you have a massive stack you can be a little less lucky at the end - meaning you can afford to lose a flip or two. And if folks are looking to move up the pay scale, you can put a lot of pressure on once the blinds reach goofy level.

drmc hit the nail on the head . MTTs are all about chip accumulation, more than survival, some would argue. In order to accumulate, I think to have to play small edges much more aggresively, even early.

i should also note that people in MTTs tend to suck, much worse than they should. Meaning that people in a 100 MTT are much worse than the average players in a 100 or 200 SNG or 1/2+ NL cash table. I assume they are playing under rolled as well. That's good for us, but it is an arguement against aggressive play, especially with no hand, since you may not get as many folds as would be expected. So gamble, but gamble on flips, good draws, etc rather than just trying to run people over.

I think you have more of a chance when you lose 1/4 or 1/2 of your stack in a SNG than in a MTT.. I dont mind taking chances early on or really getting my money in with premium hands. Earlier the better, you are either going lose early or lose late, or reach the FT. I tend to laydown hands I almost never would want to in a SNG in an MTT when its way late. Other than that .. Concentrate on your table and stop going to the lobby to see whose left!!!!!!!

    drmcboy and jdubs are right

MTT = Chip Accumulation, SnG = Survival.

In an SnG (especially at lower limits) you can almost fold into the money. This is just not possible in an MTT and you need to take more chances.

It's more important to not lose chips in an SnG than it is to win but in an MTT it's the opposite.
