Still working on getting the hand history together for this, but I really think I blew a chance to win my first MTT ($2, 143 players) last night. It was a tale of two tourneys - I think I played pretty darn good TAG style up until we were at last 13-15 players (money was 10th and up and I was 2nd in chips), and then I just friggin imploded. At first I thought I would just coast into the final table, but the blinds were at 800/1600 and at 2nd in chips I was sitting with about 27k. Short stacks (around 8k) kept going all in and winning, so there was some wild stuff going on. The one hand I really remember that hurt me was when I was on the button, the guy to my right (cutoff) got folded around to and he minraised, I reraised another 1600 with AKo. Blinds folded, cutoff guy called. Flop came raggy, he made a big bet (dont remember how much exactly but i thing about 3600), I folded. He showed me 92s and he had paired the 2 on the raggy flop. It was all downhill from there. I finished 9th, but I feel if I would have played better, I could have at least had top 3 finish. I am definitely getting better, because I have made 3 final tables in the last 5 MTT's I have played. The other ones, though, i was already shortstacked going into the FT, so this is the one that kills me. I will get a hand history together so there is something to look at. If someone can help me figure out how to get that done (see other post), or else I will just have to edit it down and format it and everything, and then I'll post it. EDIT: I found the hand history on this one and I didnt relay this right. Please review this instead and give feed back please. I was 2nd in chips and the other guy was a close 4th. | Why min raise with AK there? put some teeth in it. he can't fold any two cards to a min raise there. Sounds to me like you should have just moved in. | |||

My mindset wasn't right. I was thinking coast to final table and dont risk too many chips. The cutoff guy was the chip leader (forgot to put that in above) by about 3k over me and the one guy i didnt really want to tangle with. So on the bubble of this tourney I should have pushed All In preflop against the one guy that could take me out? In retrospect, he probably would have folded to that, but I had no idea what he was playing. I was thinking mid pocket pair maybe, and that I was behind after the flop. |

Aha, him being the CL changes everything. In that case I say raise to about 8K or so, if he moves in you've got a tough decision (I'd lean toward a call but I could care less about ITM, I wouldn't hate you for folding), if he calls you figure non AA KK PP just like you say and you're looking for the A or K. The key here is the pot was... was 800+1600 + prolly 800 more or so in Antes + his 3200 = 6400 or so, and you make it 4800 so over 10K - what hand is he going to fold for 1600 more? unless he's a moron, nothing. You would have been better off calling rather than min raising, but still I much prefer a raise. When the blinds get this big people will min raise steal. I think you're overestimating a 27K stack - in a couple orbits you're down to push or fold mode just like every one else - the fact that you're second doesn't really matter. Note how much CL was willing to gamble with his garbage hand - he knew it wasn't over. Read HOH2! |

With AK in that situation I'm pushing. You can hurt him basically as much as he can hurt you. He will almost certainly fold to an all-in, and if not you're likely at worst a coin flip (I like ignoring AA, KK). Take away all positional advantage from him. This move will also help your image somewhat. Lots of other people are just trying to get ITM as well at this stage, so you really need to be aggressive at this stage. When you have the ability to put somebody out, they respect your moves a little more. Quote:

Thanks for the advice guys, and yes I am getting the book. Should I get the first one first or just get HoH2? Just to clarify the scenario, there were no antes at that point in the tourney, just the blinds. I guess I should have pushed back at him. In some previous tournaments, I felt I made some really good button/blinds plays that ended up not working out, including a small blind re-raising me all in for all my chips after I made a 3xbb raise on him. I called it because I had AKs, and he ended up winning the hand and knocking me out with QJo - lol. There were a couple other hands like that in some other MTT's where I was the favorite and lost after bothe ending up AI, so I think I was gun shy on making the move I KNEW I should make. Yeah it's much easier for me to say move in than it would have been to do it! But I have been convinced that bold, aggresive play is the way to win these things. You're going to have to win a few flips or AQ vs KJ types... or get lucky and have the guy flip over 77 to your 88. Both HOH are worth getting, but it's HOH2 that he gets into late tourney play. |
