Post subject: How would you play again this type of player?

Hi all,
I am looking for thoughts on how you guys would handle this type of player. I had this guy sitting right to my left. We have played together a lot and he knows that I am pretty tight and he is pretty good. Every time I was raising with good hands he was calling and all the time accecpt when I was on the button he had position on me. So what was happening was I would raise he would call then I wouldn't hit the flop and then he would auto bet putting me on two overs when I checked it to him, which he was right and then I would fold. He showed a few hands and once he called me with 42o. I even tried to increase my original raise from 3x to 5x and still the same. Still the same, it was very frustrating. Should I have been betting out on the flop or should I have just pushed post flop? Any thoughts?

If you REALLY think a) he is betting into you on the flop with air and b) he can lay down two overcards/bottom pair/gutshot/whatever if you push over then push over his flop bet. If you're right, you can really win a lot of chips - your original raise plus his c-bet.
Just don't get too upset if he calls stacks you...

it sounds like you need to mix up your play more. C-bet when you miss the flop sometimes and sometimes check when you DO hit as it sounds like you are playing too straight up the entire time.

Thanks guys, so maybe bet out first after the flop and see what happens and if still being called the next time on the flop just push. I think he is capable of throwing away bottom or mid pair, but would probably call bottom or mid with a draw.

You're getting there as board texture will also play a big part in what you do. As an example. You are dealt A , J, raise 3xBB pre-flop and villian calls you. The board hits with 7 , 9, 6 . I probably would not C-bet this board as there are many holdings that you are either behind on or could lose to a draw on. Villian would know that you did not hit this board and would most likely call you down on mid or bottom pair or even a flat draw.
On the other hand, if the board was 5, Q, T I am C-betting this all day.

So given the second flop I C bet and then I am called, do I shoot another one on the turn if it is a blank?

He called every raise you made because he knew he could outplay you postflop.
This means both your preflop and postflop game are predicable, you need to vary both of them, mostly your postflop.
Check raise him a few times, even if you have nothing, call his bets with hands like 2nd pair

Shooting again depends on the card. If a J hits I would definitely bet big to prevent him from drawing to a straight. If an A hits I would most likely check, hoping for a check raise part of the time and bet part of the time.
the key here is that you need to vary your play more often so he can't read what you have based on your betting patterns. Bet with nothing at times, check/raise at times, and check/fold at times.

Something else you might try is widening your range of hands played. Throw in connectors and suited aces and if you hit a monster. Play EXACTLY as you do when you have nothing.
Stack him once and he'll soon stop calling you with trash.
