Really good stuff Andy. But what about sng satellites, where winner takes all? I think sometimes 2nd gets entry back. Would I be better off playing real mtt satellites?

I play these a lot too, namely the Pearl single-table sats on Dise and sometimes PokerStars 500K sat SNGs. The format isn't exactly the same, since only one person wins the seat, so I'd play these more like a SNG and less like a satellite. Competition is pretty weak anyway, so in that regard it makes it a lot like a satellite MTT. If I have a choice between qualifying through an MTT satellite or playing a SNG satellite (and time isn't an issue), I choose the MTT.

It seemed to me that since the SNG satts (at least on PS/PP) weren't THAT much easier than regular 2/3-table SNGS, and 1st in one of those paid > enough get a buy in with cash, that these were silly?
Am I wrong? (I am at work so I cannot look up the buy ins)

Well, you could look at these like any other tournament, in that if you don't feel like you're getting a good enough return on your money, then don't play. Not all satellites have a desirable payout structure, so it's up to you to decide which ones are worth your time.
Some sats are silly. Some are easier to make an edge in than others.

I am relatively new here, and this is my first post, so no really profound insights or anything, but. . .
I played a Pokerstars Frequent Player Point satellite that won me a seat to a larger satellite, 300 FPP buy-in wins a seat to 3000 FPP buy-in (which would then lead to a satellite to one of the Europe events). Anyway, only about 120 people played and getting one of the 11 or 12 seats was actually easy. But I couldn't play the bigger tourney, so I unregistered and now had 3000 more FPPS, which were usable for satillites to real money games, like 400 + rebuys or 500 FPPs to get in the sunday $500,000 game.
It seems to me that those were better uses of the FPPs I got. Can anybody tell me if I am wrong about this, but I believe if I win a seat at that game that usually has a $200 buy-in, even if I get there by a FPP satellite, I could unregister and get the $200? Obviously that is way less than some of you guys would win PLAYING the tourney, but if is at a bad time or something, it would be a nice way to turn FPPs into real money!
I love this site, a lot of excellent advice has been posted here.

Sort of. By unregistering from an event, you get tournament dollars on PokerStars, otherwise known as T$. You can only spend it on buying into tournaments or sit-and-goes, and you can't withdraw it or play with it in cash games. There's also a guy called cashmanbrian who has made a business of buying T$ from players. I like the idea of playing sats just for T$, because it has the same value relative to real money and always does my bankroll a great justice.

I use satellites a lot, dont come in here much so first time ive seen the post.

Nothing to add to the post, it clearly points out what i would also consider the best style of play.
I usually use a 2 buy in rule for satelites. So if i know i would buy into the mtt anyway (im trying to get in cheap rather than buying in) then i enter as many times as i can upto the equivalent of 2 buy ins for the mtt (lots of tries if its an sng) Otheriwse if i know i cant buy into the mtt directly i only use the equivalent of half a buy in. Im not keen on using more money when i cant buy in anyway. (eg sats into 500k on stars, 36? sngs, id play 3 at 100~if i knew i couldnt buy in directly for $200) But if i was rolled id play 10 or so, knowing id buy in anyway.

Hey Andy, I just won a seat to the Sunday 750K on PokerStars by winning the $3R&A satellite. I have to say that when we got to the third break and I was the third smallest stack with about ten to go until the seat, I came here and browsed your guide for some quick pointers. I identified three players who were clearly trying to fold their way into a seat, and stole their blinds relentlessly. I got re-raised all-in once, but other than that, it was smooth sailing. Without a showdown, I worked my way up to 3rd in the chip standings, at which point I could afford the risk of calling a short stack's all-in when I had jacks in the big blind. My hand held up and I eventually wound up busting all three of the players whose blinds I'd been stealing the whole time.

I don't really get the point of playing the seat you won though... since we can technically unregister and cash out $T, basically the same value as cash, wouldn't you consider playing a $215 with a $1k bankroll exactly the same as buying in yourself, and thus playing out of your limits?

Nice post. I was reading your post while reading what you had to say on the satellites and won the tournament. i never really play satellites, and when i do - i don't mean to. this is because the competitions that i'm qualifying for are always at annoying times. also, they take to long and i just don't have enough time to enter these big tourneys.
good post though. i understand the game a bit better now
