Beginners Circle Halloween Contest

Happy Halloween everybody!

We're having a contest here in the Beginners Circle for Halloween. What you'll need to do to enter is write a 500 word (minimum) strategy post on a basic poker concept. This can be something you know about, something you want to study and learn about for the purpose of the post or whatever else. Post your strategy post here in the BC and link to it in this thread to enter.

This contest is going to run through Friday, November 7.

Prizes:

First place gets a choice between having a forum rap battle with me or facing me in a four-game chess match for bragging rights.

Second place gets a quote in my signature until I turn 30 later this year.

Is Luck (variance) a genuine topic?
I sometimes consider discarding semi premium hands instead of playing against a player who is clearly on a hot streak, and frequently when there are showdowns (with other players, or I ignored the signs) this unusual non mathematical strategy is shown to have some spooky validity. (52 words).
