Default Live vs. Online Poker Play, thoughts?

Personally, I think that online poker is not real poker. It annoys the hell out of me. All these players that sit at their computer clicking a mouse and believing that they are poker players.

What are your thoughts? Do you think that online poker is as valid as live poker?

    Sure I do.

Your quote of "all these players that sit at their computer clicking a mouse and believing they are poker players" describes me and many on this forum to a 'T' ...

Online poker has been great for the game in general if you ask me. Not so many people were ready to take a leap into the live scene a decade ago (even after Rounders & Moneymaker), but were far less intimidated by signing up to an online poker site, depositing a few bucks and clicking away.

Playing online is also a great way to build one's bankroll--especially with the micro stakes games and freerolls that are scattered across the major sites. I have nothing at all against live poker, but it's not typically a venue where a recreational player can walk in with $10 and get a lot of (or any) play.

On a separate note, we're currently running a number of Contests revolving around our Open Face Chinese Poker software. We have some prizes available in our Official OFC Contest for FTR Points and are quickly approaching Hand #500,000 in a separate event.

The game is free to play (it only requires FTR Points) for any FlopTurnRiver forum member. I've taken the liberty of adding 1,000 FTR Points to your account for your first forum post, so you can get in on the action if you like.

Best of luck to you. Take it easy on us "believers" if you happen to be seated across the table from one of us in a live game.

If it's not real poker, then is it imaginary poker? This reminds me of people who complain about fast time controls in chess saying it's not real chess.

    I guess fixed-limit hold'em isn't real poker since it's not no-limit five-card stud. Follows the same logic.

Personally, I think that mariyapoula is not a real person. He annoys the hell out of me. All these mariyapoulas that sit at their computer clicking a mouse and believing that they are people.

What are your thoughts? Do you think that mariyapoula is a real person?

Live players are generally worse than online players at each level of buy-in or blind structure.

An online $3/$6 FLHE player is much better than his contemporary live bingo-no-fold'em-holdem player.

Online and live poker have very different dynamics. Some players who crush online have trouble beating live. Most players who are good live players that have not played online would get crushed if they played the same level online.

That will surely depend on their experience and strategy, in my opinion.

I think both are just two different "varieties" of the same game. Like live chess and online chess.
Both have their own pros and cons - depending on the individual likes and strengths of each player. I prefer live play (in general for all games) because it's more about social interaction. And maybe also because I'm pretty good at recognizing behaviors and adapting my own actions to it.
When I started playing online it was difficult for me because there was no chance to get these specific bahavior-related reads. But the good thing was that I had the chance to learn more about the theoretical and tactical aspects of the game (like math-based decisions for example) which improved my live game as well.

poker is a game, if poker is played online, it is online poker. if its played live. its live poker. I use to play live, and i find that live is much easier than online. However the swing is much crazier because your force to play bigger blinds and maybe even stick to limit rather than no limit. Online poker is full of great players and its one of the greatest ways to start off.

From my experience, i tell new players to learn the basics by playing Online. Live play can be a bit overwhelming if new to the game, specially if the people you're playing against are not friends. Online is much faster paced than Live action, as you can multi table online. Each has its upside and downside. live play you can get paid right there and then and have cash in pocket, online you gotta wait. Also some people dont live close to a casino or have many friends that play poker on a regular basis, so online is really their only way of playing.

remember that players from all around the world read these forums and cashout problems facing US players do not apply to most of the major sites available to ROW players with cashouts pretty much instanteous.

this is interesting. as an online poker player who haven't experienced playing live poker, i thought it's the other way around. your opponents being able to see your movement and facial reaction is (for me) intimidating. where as in online, you can shout and curse your opponents anytime you want

that's actually what im doing right now and it makes me feel relief that someone thinks the same.
how can you face the problem if the problem is your face?

I play both (although more online as of late) and there is definitely a difference in skill level.
The local charity/ casino games in my area play much softer than the average .10/.25NL online.

I never play a real live tournament but I have no doubt that is more easy play live than online.
When we play live we can look to our opponents faces and read their minds, we can read better the players.
When we play online we have no information about the other players; the only thing we can do is take some notes of those usually play the same tournaments that we play.

If you get calm and patient and define your tournaments and hands to play you will have success online.

There is literally no one who can win at online poker who won't crush stakes ~ 10X as high in live poker, unless they have some bizarro personality disorder where they can't think rationally around real people. for instance, the play in your basic $400 BI mtt is probably equivalent to a $10 MTT on a major site. Winning NL25 players can beat $2/$5 live.

There are tons of live players who can be break-even or slightly winning regs who will get destroyed at micro-limits online.
Playing big pots at small stakes.
