villain didn't 3bet, so we can discount AK/AA and mayber AQ also (for the average villain of course).
Why would he raise flop with AQ/A9/A2/99 or 22 on such a dry flop? (As a worst case scenario, let's say he does) On the turn he is still representing A9/A2/99/22 and maybe AQ. I don't think that the average villain would play AJ this way.
This turn bet is either a bluff or A9/A2/99/22/AQ. There are 18 combos of these but there are a lot more combos for bluffs (Q is a very good card to bluff bet turn). Plus this is SB vs BB.
I would call turn and c/f or c/c river depending on the bet size.

I don't mind folding the flop really. It's way more common (at least I think) for villain to float the flop instead of raising it and now you're in a huge guessing game OOP vs a complete unknown.
You basically have to call down now imo.
And I don't think checking the flop would have helped, it most likely would have started the same guessing game. It's pretty likely villain would have folded or called the flop (instead of raising) and I assume you would have knowed how to play future streets pretty well then.

I'd fold turn. Driest board on earth, and I really doubt he expects you to fold.
