Is a check/raise here the best play or is it too likely to scare everyone off? Would it have been better to lead out? How do you play this one?

I see the pot sized bet there as him holding AK or KQ. Looks like a good scenario for slow play. You isolate to one plr who repp'ed TPTK and you play like you are drawing: weak leads, minraises, check, etc. Against a loose plr you can sometimes get them pot comitted and suck 'em dry. There's always the risk that he's also got the flush draw but I would give a card here and hope to build the pot on the turn.
