I fold pre for the exact reason to avoid spots like this. If your calling the 3 bet you kinda have to call, but I definitely don't like it.

hmm how often is this AQ? if not what can we really beat? a pocket pair (not sure why 99-JJ would check flop), maybe AK doesn't look good but call I guess

fold preflop. fold river as played. he easily couldve been trying to trap you on the flop, or missed AQ. its unlikely he takes this line with AK.

would help with some stats on the player. i.e. what u have seen him 3bet in blinds with, how often he cbets, but i guess we have no data.

Being ahead here is unlikely but I just love to know what he's got. the check is quite suspicious if hes an average player at this stake. hmm flopped top set?

Rule #59: If an opponent doesn't cbet an obvious cbet board, he's not folding to one bet. If he himself makes two bets he has the nuts.

Well some useful information that I probably should have included was that I doubled up through him a few hands prior with a set against his top two pair. He wasn't to pleased apparently as I was cursed to death in the chat. I actually believed him to be trying to squeeze me out preflop with a marginal hand. Your right.. 99-JJ does not check that flop. AA-KK would check it as well? I wasn't buying he had either of those two hands. Turns out I was right when I called the river and he showed KJ.

I find at lower stakes this isn't necessarily the case

Fold preflop. KQo is so marginal against his 3bet range.

When you call the turn, you can only really beat a bluff. So if you do call, you have to call the river as well. Seems pretty weak to call turn and then fold to a river bet.

bet flop when checked to. if called give up. this can change if he is 3 betting lite. if he isn't i think this line maximizes your value because he should be cbetting a lot here with made hands.
