somebody has to explain the fascination with playing heads up to me.
i dont get it. when a tourney comes down to the end...HU is a crap shoot, imo. not a 50/50 proposition, as the skill wins, i guess. but, how the hell can you read somebody? it seems like you "bob and weave," "duck and punch," and "double pump fake" until someone matches up with a good hand v. a second bester.
i just dont see the entertainment value in a "bluff off." and , i certainly dont see the penis waving, mano-a-mano to who's the better player...unless you play 4 out of 7...minimum.
please set me straight.

LHE is a game where your skill keeps you breakeven until you hit your rush of random BS.
Nothing beats flopping quads while dropping a duece!

Other than contradicting yourself here, the 2nd sentence is the appeal of HU. With a skill edge you'll win more often than lose.

Just playing to improve.

HU in SNGs is different from HU in MTTs which is different from HU in ring games. A 10 player SNG that gets HU is pretty much a crap shoot with both players having less than 10 BB. HU in an MTT can be a fairly stressful experience for a newcomer, as the difference between first and second is very often a few thousand dollars. HU in ring and a HU SNG play similar but different strategies are required for both.
I'd say HU in MTTs are closest to HU SNGs, you try to take big hunks of chips out of your opponent; usually with less than marginal hands. HU ring is a completely different beasts when both opponents are 100 BB deep.
LHE HU is even more different but I won't get into that at all.

HU is Poker in it's purest form - there's some magic in it and it's hard to explain to 'uninitiated'.
There's lots of opponent specific strategy compared to short term tactics (picking the best line) making the game way more interesting.
Also, lots of HU is the best training tool for serious player. Never in my poker-life did I improve faster then after first few hundreds HU SNGs. Don't now when and how to bluff? Suck at reading hands? Not sure how to play back? Still miss value bets? ... HU will force you to learn. And you'll learn fast.
