I am a new player who has been pretty much just playing the free bar tournaments to get my feet wet. Just started playing a semi-regular cash game with some guys on my softball team and while I have done well, I think they are weak enough players that I should be doing better. I think that I may be missing some opportunities. First of all its usually 5 or 6 people .50/1 NL with a 30 dollar buyin. THese guys are weak bettors. They rarely raise more than 1xBB before the flop- for the most part they generally want to see flops cheap. My standard 3x BB raise is just abnormal to them. Even after the flop the raises are generally just 1 or 2 dollars even if there is a large pot so it is certainly possible to stick around with drawing hands. How much should I be expanding out my hand selections on a table like this? I mean if people aren't going to push me out should I start playing all connectors and any 2 suited cards? I have to think that adding gapped suited connectors would be a good play on a table like this. Or am I just overthinking it and should stick to Tight and agressive knowing that I should be profitable that way? They are starting to catch on to the fact that I will raise from the button with pretty much anything if no one has showed any strength so I definately need to start varying my play. But any advice on how to approach this game would be helpful.

My take is that you shouldn't be looking to play too much looser, you should be looking to play a bit more aggressive. Play good positional poker and look to steal some pots if they're not calling your 3xbb raises. Keep doing it with good hands and start adding some marginal hands like middle or small pocket pairs, maybe even a suited connector in late position. Eventually they may start looking you up... if they do and catch you in a bad spot, thats fine, just start playing pretty tight again and wait for a good hand then push them and they'll look you up thinking you're trying to steal, but you'll have the better hand.

When i play with my family and family friends, we play 5$ buy in tournaments where everyone bets like this. If the big blind is 10 chips, a *big* raise is 30 chips pre flop. If the pot is 70 on the flop, 10 chips can still earn folds...when you are the only one who knows what pot odds are at a table like this, you can make a killing off your drawing hands alone. Get in with all suited connectors from any position. If they are only raising 1 extra BB pre flop anyway, you might as well limp from EP because you know that you will see the flop cheap most of the time anyway. Don't bet your draws, just check and call. You know you will get to draw at extremely good prices with them whenever you hit the flop.
The only disadvantage to this strategy pertaining to your particular home game is that its 1$ big blind NL, and the max buy in is only 30$. Thats very short stacked for these blinds. You might want to suggest to your buddies making it 50 or more max buy in, or moving the big blind down to 50 cents maybe.
