Last night I was in a heads up match with a player that did the following things.
A) Never raised pre-flop, only called or folded.
B) Never raised a bet from me post-flop. Either bet post-flop, check-called, or check-fold
C) Seemed to always bet when he had it.
D) Never tried to get me all-in, never tried to bet a lot with the best hand
E) Folded a lot

I played, how I normally play, aggressive, betting out my flush draws and straight draws. The reason I lost, was not respecting his bets, I think. I called him down a couple of times, without much. After doing that, I started folding to his bets, which presented a dillemma. If I start folding because I think he has it, he may recognize this and start betting when he doesn't. I tried raising when he bet, only to get called.

I figured this would be easy, but we never seemed to both run into a hand at the same time.

What are your guy's suggestions for playing against this type of player? I'll post the hand history in the next post.

Note: this started as a 4-player. Two heads up wins in a row to win. I beat the first guy easily, expected to do the same to the second.

Read Hold 'Em for Advance Players.

It has a very good section on heads up play. It talks about the strategy of raising/betting every time, and how your opponent has to call more than 55% of the time to survive. It also talks about how to combat that strategy, and the post-flop strategy.

Granted, its a limit hold 'em book, but I thought it was pretty good.

interestingly, i played a heads-up tourney last night with someone that sounds just like your guy. he was running me down in chips (at one point, i was down to 400 and him at 2600), and i couldn't seem to hit a flop. he would call me down to the river, and usually have better pair, two pair etc., and either read me very well, or was unbluffable. he would also bluff to the river, and then show me crap cards after i folded.

so, i:

-stopped raising preflop
-stopped betting as often on flops i missed (i still did a few which seemed to make him more cautious, so he folded more)
-when i hit the flop, rather than raising or betting big, i would escalate my bets on each street. i only did this with strong hands (top two pair, flush, quads, str, etc).

in other words, be less aggressive and wait for a chance to trap. i don't think this guy as quite a calling station, but he'd beaten me at showdown so many times, he was prime for trapping. it worked, and i did win.

Yea, I played this right before I went to bed, and thought a lot about it. Thought about not raising pre-flop, which maybe isn't as big of a disadvantage. Then I thought about checking all the way post-flop, but considered that bad, as giving him a chance to catch cards, and never winning those pots where I bet and he folds. I fell asleep before I came up with a strategy I thought would win. My play may have been affected by an earlier heads up SNG where I flopped top two pair, and tried to slowplay...checked down through the turn, and then I bet the river big, and he raised big, and I didn't even consider him for catching his straight.

This is my favorite type of player to play against heads up (passive player that's bordering on being a calling station - just tighter). Almost always kill them. Its the crazy aggressive ones that give me a hard time.

I still raise preflop against them on the button with any good / great / monster hand, and the same amount with each, on the same blind level. I don't raise preflop on complete blind steals, because they're likely to call, and I barely ever raise on the BB, since they have position on me (and since they always bet when they have the hand, position will give you tons of info). On the BB, I almost always check fold to these players when the blinds are small and I've missed the flop.

So, you're making the pots bigger when you have position, and have good or better hole cards, with your preflop raises. Since they only bet when they have it, and never bet big, unless you have a monster don't raise them. If you have a very good hand, just call them down.

If they don't lead out on the flop when you have the button, whether you hit the flop or not, I think you should make it nearly automatic to back up your preflop raises on the button with a flop bet, since you said they fold a lot and also bet when they have the hand. If they fold, you just won a much bigger pot than they are usually winning on your BB, due to your preflop raise.

If they call or bet on the flop, slow way down, and fold to a bet if you don't have a pair or draw or maybe two overs (since they'll usually be betting small enough for you to have correct pot odds to call if you preflop raised). Also, the semi-bluffs on the flop are nice because even if they don't fold, you will 9 times out of 10 get the option to get the free river card after they check to you on the turn.

The key against this type of player is don't get too aggressive. Bluff if they check on the flop, since they don't check raise and they lead out when they have the hand. But other than that, you shouldn't be backing up a flop bluff with a turn bluff, etc. They have you beat if they called, and they aren't likely to lay it down.

And position is huge, like I said. Raise on the button / SB, don't raise without a killer hand on the BB, especially since you said they never preflop raise. You're trapping yourself out of position with an inferior hand if you do this regularly.

you know, this whole post got me thinking: in a 1 on 1 heads-up tourney (NOT the final two of a full table SNG) when the blinds are still trivial (BB < 100), is there really any point to raising preflop from either position?

if you always pf raise, or pf raise from the button/SB, you are disguising when you truly do have a good hand preflop. but wouldn't you be doing the same thing if you never raised preflop?

in most the heads-up tournies i've done, most people do not raise much preflop. heads-up really seems to be more about hitting the flop with what you've got, rather than winning pots with good preflop hands. plus, in a 1 on 1, you generally play whatever you're dealt (unless you last long enough for the blinds to get big - i've never had one last up to the $100 BB).

thoughts?

i think fishstick is on too something. I just finished a heads up game with a tight player. He would rarely call my preflop raises unless he was holding good cards. Then when i tried to back up my raise with a big bet on the flop he would call. Then if i tried to double that bet he would come back with a reraise. If i hadn't hit on any pairs or draws i would fold, otherwise i would call him out and usually lost on showdown. Heads up games seem to come down to who wins the big where both players have substantial hands. With the blinds so low, stealing isnt gonna do much. You need to get that big swing where your oppenent has something like 2 pair or a set and you flopped the nut str8. I hate heads up games unless its brought about by going through at least a 9 person SNG. Then at least your already in the money and have nothing to lose. The best is when your playing ripptyde and he bluffs like a maniac and you have the nuts. then boom! J/k ripp but thanks for turning me on to this site. good stuff.

(2) Little push-back on your bets
(3) Predictable

Good: You can sit to the river and catch 2pair+ and bust them. If they check on flop, a bet is in order. You might only want to bet with a marginal hand or a good draw. I wouldnt bet the turn unless something hit. Check to the river and show them. If they bet the river, you probably will need to fold, unless you hit a 2pair+ (maybe even top-pair with good kicker)

If they dont bet alot with best hand, you cant play the marginal hands or bad pot odd draws. You will break them with a stronger hand though. So if you have trips (or some other monster) and they have top pair on flop, you can call them to the river and do a sizable re-raise. it might be hard for these folks to fold the river.
