I thought his small bet in early position repped a weak hand, such as a pocket pair or something below top pair.. so I raised..

Nice ballsy play. You have to be able to make these types of moves to be a great NL player. Sometimes your read will be wrong and you'll lose a nice chunk of change, but if you're a good player, you will be right often enough for it to be profitable. Failing at these moves (or even just making them frequently enough) greatly enhances your table image allowing your big hands to be more easily paid off by good observant players.
