I've been kind of in a poker rut lately, and decided to play a 4 player Heads up tourney on stars for a change of pace. Thought I'd post a history here, and get some critiques on heads up play since I haven't posted a hand history in a long while.

I tend to start off kind of passive in heads up when the blinds are low. I'm very comfortable in my own skin post flop, and you'll see a few points where I checkraise with nothing. This tournament was filled with players who let me see cheap flops, and then allowed me to outplay them... I assure you, I can be much more aggressive preflop, but it wasn't really necessary in this game.

I've totally eliminated hands where it was folded to me preflop, and eliminated all showdown results... as you'll see, there weren't too many showdown results.

**WARNING** - VERY LONG POST
Note: Sorry this post is so long, Im really working on improving my play in HU-SNGs and by analyzing others play I can kill two birds with one stone. Feel free to critique what I say below, Im no expert, but I do play a strong winning HU game at the lower limits

hand 11: Why are you calling this bet on the turn? It is the size of the pot, yea you have two overs, but you cant assume those are clean outs and you arent getting close to the odds to call.

hand 15: Dont hate this play, youve been pushing villain off a lot of hands recently, and if he is going to fold this i think a half pot bet or 2/3 of the pot would do the job. By betting the pot on a continuation bet you make it much less profitable, especially when the opponent hasnt shown he will fight back much.

hand 16: Dont mind this call that much as its nice to get information on what kind of hand your opponent will be betting when they are last to act on the flop

hand 21: I dont think I call that flop bet, especially with two face cards which definitely hurt your outs. If I do call the flop bet, I think I have to raise the turn.

hand 22: 98o isnt an incredibly strong hand HU and your opponent hasnt been raising much preflop, Id fold this.

hand 26: Preflop I would definitely raise this, maybe you are trying to mix up your play, but im not sure. On the flop you made a huge overbet, the pot was 60, and you bet 90. Id be happy with a bet of 60 on the flop. On the turn you fire out a bet of less than the pot and are minraised to 300. Id consider laying it down here as you really have no idea where you stand in this hand because you didnt raise preflop so you dont know what kind of range to put the villain on. You built a large pot when you shouldnt have, playing it as you did I think the fold on the river was correct. Your opponent hasnt been that aggressive the last 25 hands, maybe they were taking a stand with Ace high, and hit it on the river, maybe they caught two pair out of the SB, maybe they have a higher King. I wouldnt call here.

hand 31: On the flop you have top two pair, I would definitely cold call his bet, but raise on the turn. Playing it as you did I would have to call on the river without a raise because the 5s were counterfeited

hand 33: I wouldnt be calling a pot sized bet with low pair and no kicker here

hand 34: Why are you leading this flop? With two face cards, and two cards of the same suit, I would not lead this OOP, especially without any preflop aggression shown. You have shown you will be aggressive preflop, with an Ace or a Queen you would most likely raise, you didnt here, a thinking opponent would probably raise you here

hand 36: You have to take a stand when the SB completes too much, 73o is not the hand to do it with

hand 38: See #34

hand 39: Why are you calling the turn bet? You have king high with an Ace on the board and 4 cards to a straight. Fold.

hand 41: Id raise the turn, and why are you overbetting the river?

hand 45: Here you make an actual hand on the turn, but bet the pot. Toss out bet of 50, dont want to scare away action that much

hand 50: Read this through the first time and didnt know what you were doing. Looked over it again and saw a gutshot straight draw, a call on the flop isnt terrible, and the fold on the turn is correct. Stop trying to take every pot off your opponent, especially when they show the aggression

hand 52: I dont like how this was played, it worked but only because your opponent got tired of your overbets on the river. Id minbet the turn and then bet half the pot on the river

hand 57: Why are you betting so aggressively with two pair? HU that is a very strong hand, Id probably call his raise and try to extract some more chips out of it

hand 61: Fold to the raise on the flop. Dont know how good or bad a call would be on the flop, however a raise is bad. Fold on the turn. I like how the river was played, but thats about it

hand 63: When your opponent has such a small stack you should either push or fold. I do not know if this is the correct play, but with 75o I would fold. Villain will call with anything decent, basically anything they call with will have you beat and you will then double them up and they will have more than 10BB. A fold only gives them 20 chips, a push and losing gives them 280. If somebody with SNGPT would calculate this, I would appreciate it a lot, as I have been in similar situations and dont always know how to play it

hand 68: I would definitely be folding the turn here. On the river I dont think a check trying to get your opponent [who has shown aggression all hand] to go all in would terrible and is probably the line I take. If you bet and they push, you call. But if they push over you they would have pushed to a check and if they fold to your bet you are in the same position as if you just checked. Id let them continue with the aggression, shouldnt cost you any chips

I put all of the following hands into the same category:
hand 5; hand 13; hand 28; hand 46; hand 48; and hand 55

You say you tend to start off kind of passive, but I dont see that at all here. You also say you can be more aggressive, I feel strongly that all that would do is spew more chips. You seem to be getting way too aggressive when you dont have to.

Hand 5: You raise with nothing, get called and then when its checked to you on the turn [which is an Ace nonetheless] you make a fairly large bet. Why? You are 5 hands into this and dont have any reads on your opponent, I feel like this situation is just asking for a checkraise. This isnt even a big pot, why risk all of these chips for such a small reward so early with such small blinds?

Hand 13: This pot is small and you have a big chip lead AND the blinds are small, why do you care so much about it?

Hand 28: Why are you calling here? You have to mix up your play sometimes, but I still dont think calling with 95s is a strong play, and I definitely dont like leading this flop

Hand 46: Fold to the raise on the flop, and I really wouldnt lead on the river. Your opponent put in 150 on the flop, you called, now on the river in an attempt to steal you put in...150. Chances are they will call that with the increased odds, and essentially anything that calls has you beat. I dont think the chips are worth the risk

Hand 48: See hand #46. Id be happy to check this pot down, you seem like you have the mindset where you need to win every pot. Against players like the one you played against this is ok, but against a decent player you are spewing chips. If you want to take this pot, I would be the turn, not the river.

Hand 55: What are you trying to represent on the flop?

Overall I think you played like the typical low-limit heads up sng player does, make huge bets, and make them often. Most of them just dont make sense, against a weak tight player they may work, but a lot of times it doesnt. According to PokerOffice over all of my HU-SNGs I am LAGG, but that doesnt mean I make bets like you did here. You were risking too many chips for too little reward. Betting more than the pot when you didnt have to, betting when it didnt make sense. You can toss out bets when you are in position to try to take down a pot, but those bets dont have to be pot sized. When you are OOP dont try to take so many pots, especially with scare cards on the board. A lot of the hands you played well, but your play overall was very predictable. Tone down your aggression, figure out how small of a bet your opponent will fold to, and then use that. Risk as few chips as possible while still giving yourself a good chance of taking down the pot. Your first opponent was very weak tight and folded too much, you exploited that, i disagree with how exactly you went about exploiting it though. Your 2nd opponent seemed fairly decent, you just outdrew them. These problems shouldnt be too hard to fix, and if you disagree with anything I said I would be happy to discuss it with you.

Andy,

I appreciate the very thorough response. it's well thought out, and you bring up some valid points. Let me say this before I get into my response (which tonight, as I'm busy, won't be nearly as thorough as yours.)

I am not the greatest heads up player. When the blinds get higher, I definitely get more aggressive preflop, but I enjoy and am very comfortable postflop. In these deep stacked heads up confrontations, I am VERY willing to take some chances early... not so much to double up, but more too gauge my opponent. When I checkraise in hand 5, I know it looks donkish... and if it were hand 30, it probably is... but I have to gauge my opponent, and that hand right there showed me that this guy can be pushed over... That's why you see me betting every flop. He's shown me that he's for sale. Most of the time, we're both going to miss the flop. You know that... I know that. I'm going to pick up the lions share of those pots ON THIS GUY. He's told me that, and until he proves otherwise, I'm going to keep hammering on him. The time or two he does check raise me is more than compensated for by all the small pots he's given me.

As to why I always bet pot sized when a half a pot will do: I am very familiar with the Continuation bet, and why a half pot works just as well. That's true... when the blinds mean something. At these lower levels a 1BB is often called on a whim... a chase... a gut instinct. It's a tactical error to bet more than the pot most times, so I opt for pot at these levels. Were the blinds higher, and a half pot bet were more significant, I would tone it down. These games never got to that level.

On one hand, I did bet more than the pot... All I can say is, my mouse kind of sucks, and that PS slider gives me a headache.

I bet all kinds of hands OOP, with nothing on Opponent 1. He was a pushover. You're right... I'm begging... literally begging, for a checkraise... but he's not going to give it to me.

I made some bad calls here and there against Opponent 1. Certainly... but your questions as to what I'm trying to rep here and there against him... irrelevant. It doesn't matter... what I'm repping is the chance that he won't call. Some of my goofy calls preflop are not based on my cards... they're based on the fact that I'm in total control of this guy, and he's going to lay down enough that I can call a lot more liberally than I can against you or a more aggressive and competent opponent.

As for the second opponent... yes, I got lucky. Absolutely. I don't deny it...

To address it hand by hand...

In 55, I raised preflop. I missed. I bet the flop anyway. Pretty standard stuff.

Hand 57... Yeah.. I overbet that one. It was an error, to a certain extent... opponent made a good laydown... rather than a bad call. My logic was a bit like this... I raised preflop... opponent calls, then bets when the Ace hits. He probably had a decent ace, and I outflopped him. I was simply trying to end it there. I should have slowed down... Very good point.

On hand 61... I took a flop with a marginal hand... and got an OESD. I reraised in position to try and get a look at the river, and no bet on the turn. It didn't work. I made a HORRIBLE call on the turn.... and this is where I got lucky. Sometimes, you're good... sometimes you're lucky. This is one of my luckbox moments.

On hand 63, I'm just trying to end it. My opponent has an almost nonexistent stack. Unless he's paired (highly unlikely), I've got a fighting shot. I'm going to call any play he makes, as I'm not even far enough behind AK to make it worth not trying to put this cat out his misery. I just decided to push and save him the hassle, and increase what little FE I might have (which isn't much) but if I'm going to call it... I'm going to bet it.

In 68... I've got the chips to get frisky. My opponent should push, but he keeps betting small enough that I can just call off and try to knock him out.... Is it pot odds correct? Nope. But I have an 11-1 chip lead. I can gamble.

What I'm trying to say is this, I guess.

Some of these hands are garbage, and against a better player, I get eaten alive in game 1. I wasn't against a better player. I was against a guy who leaked chips like a sieve, and I was catching the droppings. My cards were pretty much irrelevant, because he wasn't going to play back at me. Against a more competent opponent, I play a lot differently.

I appreciate your feedback... it's been helpful. Any more comments are more than welcome.

I definitely understand your strategy and why it worked against this playr, I used to play very similar to this. Try to feel out my opponent by making a lot of bets in different places early on, but realized that the majority of the time that is spewing chips. Here it worked because you were playing against a very weak tight player; however, the majority of the time I find that Im up against either a maniac or a calling station, both of which make this chip spewing unless you have a hand. So yea, I agree that it worked against this opponent, I just feel like that is too narrow a perspective. It worked here, but often would have costed you chips that you didnt need to be spending. Your cards were irrelevant, but your bets were not, I feel like you could have had this same outcome without as much risk. Try to find how little you can bet to get your opponent to fold so that when they do play back at you, you can let go of the hand without costing yourself a lot. Again, those first 10 hands you dont know if you are against a better player or not, so your strategy should be one that isnt easily exploitable by a better player. You seem to have a good grasp of the heads up concepts, I just feel like you take the aggression a little too far when it isnt needed.

Good advice. I'll play around with it.
