he's doing the betting what more can you really ask for? :P
I suppose you could push the river to see whether he feels you have tried to buy the pot but really i'd be happy i got that amount of action from someone else when i have the straight.

Yeah, you could be happy he gave you some action, but maybe try something like this:
From the way you played this, in his eyes you're either slowplaying or on a draw. I mean, wouldn't a 400NL player normally pick up on it eventually (meaning him)?
Try to push back at him right on the flop so he's attached to the pot if he calls. If he keeps pushing on the turn, smooth call him until the river, when you think of the best way you can make it look like you're trying to buy it from him (i.e. a huge reraise to over 3x his bet or a jam)...
If he checks on the turn, not to worry. Check behind and let him take another shot at it on the river (assuming blanks roll off and you really have the nuts), and if he doesn't, well... That's okay too.
Maybe he'll let his ego take control and pay you off.

It depends on your opponent here. If he has a pathetic hand and is a tightass its going to be difficult to get paid anything at all. I would reccommend trying to get more money into the pot as well either by a bigger raise on the end or earlier in the hand. A bigger raise on the end doesn't have to get called that often to make up for the rest of the times it scares the fish away. A raise earlier in the hand might have scared them off as well, but you just have to read the opponent and be aware of how they percieve you. If you're always in there raising people, testing them, buying pots and getting your fingers stanky then I would definitely raise it up from the beginning.
Straights seem to always get gayed somehow anyways by either getting 4 of them up on the board, a flush coming, bigger straight, or the board pairing so don't feel too bad if you scare an opponent off.
Nice work being up at 400NL by the way - seeing everyone moving up has been pretty motivating. How's it going up there?

Thanks. It's going fairly well. Hit a downswing today, lost about $300, but in the past 4 or so I was up like $2,000 so I can't complain. Thx for all the responses I'll be sure and use them next time.

I like the smooth call on the flop. Any aggression here and you could scare him off...A min raise, or a 2.5x raise, you might earn a fold. Smooth call makes it look like a draw/overs, which is what you want so he bets the turn...and he does, good job.
I consider a min raise on the turn. My thinking is that another call on the turn could elicit a check/fold on the river. Min raises on the later streets look like bluffs or information probe bets. I think if you smooth call the turn, he check/folds the river a fair percentage of the time. So you're only making the turn bet + everythign before it. If you min raise and he folds, you still made the same amount.
If you choose to smooth call the turn, i agree that a big river bet is appropriate. Min raise makes your hand look strong. 3-4x raise makes it look like a busted draw/bluff because his bet looks weak.
