i had been at this 5-10NL table for about 45 mins and had decent reads on most players. the villain in this hand was playing really solid poker, not making mistakes and really getting a lot of value for his hands. i will try to walk you through the reasoning behind making the call. keep in mind i didn't understand the hand this explicitly until i reviewed it, but also keep in mind that a lot of big pots are won when you can get together several points of reasoning behind a decision in a very short matter of time...

at this point in the hand i have an open ended straight draw and decide that if it is raised early and folded around to me i will make the call, except for masterpokerrr who doesn't have a full stack and with whom i won't get mixed up in the wrong hand. so i get lucky and have it minraised around to me so i make the easy call - i was prepared to call the standard $35 raise here just to see the turn

Turn (board: 8h Jc 3d Qc):

alias2211 checks. tim756 bets $55. alias2211
raises to $110. tim756 calls.

ok so i hit my straight, but i'm on the lower end of it if a K falls, leaving me open to getting beat by a higher straight. i'm surprised by his significantly higher raise, but i noticed in past play from villain that he'd often wait until the turn w/ position to make his contination bet. so i was thinking at this point he may have had like k10 for his own open ender, Ax of clubs or even hit a Q w/ QJ or QK OR even making his cbet on the turn like he'd been doing once in awhile. i am fairly sure he'd have raised AQ higher preflop and on the flop since he had position on me. given all this, i decide to make the bump minraise. i normally don't like to minraise at all, but i'm certain that i have the best hand at this point and he seems interested in taking down the pot all of a sudden so i want value.

River (board: 8h Jc 3d Qc Kd):

alias2211 bets $135. tim756 raises to $680.
alias2211 calls.

I SAID GODDAMN. i hated to see that K fall, at least it wasn't a club. i still really thought i had the best hand here, so i made a value bet that i thought he would call. and then he raises nearly all in. I SAID GODDAMN. i had to think about this for awhile.

does he really have a higher straight? the board didn't pair so he might have slowplayed a set into oblivion so i'm fine there, and there isn't 3 suited on the board. so i can narrow it down to one specific hand beating me here: a10. let's go back and look how he played and see if it matches up w/ a10 for my general read on him:

- no raise preflop. it's possible that he limped w/ a10, but the game did have a lot of action to it, so he had to know that if he limped a weak ace like that from early position he wouldn't really like to stand a later raise PF to have an A fall on the flop. so i count this against him having a10

-the size of his bet from flop to turn increases by 5BB. would he really bet a10 like that? maybe if he thought i called the minraise on the flop w/ an 8 or 3. but i don't think he thought i was playing like that since i wasn't calling down w/ midpair against him.

-my river bet was a value bet ($135 into about $275 so just less than half pot bet) and then he goes and shoves a huge overbet in. would he do this if he really had the nuts? maybe, but i think if he thought i liked my hand just somewhat that i would only have called a minraise at the end if he indeed had a10. the fact that he's getting all in there w/ no flush board or paired board just doesn't go with his style of play and it seems like he's telling me he doesn't want me to call. so of course i do.

Showdown:

tim756 shows Qs Kh.
tim756 has Qs Kh Jc Qc Kd: two pair, kings and queens.
alias2211 shows 9c Td.
alias2211 has 9c Td Jc Qc Kd: straight, king high.

Hand #10211030-20851 Summary:

$3 is raked from a pot of $1635.
alias2211 wins $1632 with straight, king high.

in retrospect, i am pretty sure he thought i was on a J that i liked well enough to take it to the river (maybe even two pair since i was BB) when his Q fell on the turn. then he liked it even more w his K fell giving him top two. so when he has his top two pair with a somewhat weak blocking bet out of position but against him (which turned out to be a value bet, he decided to take a shot. not really a steal attempt, he did like his hand a lot.

also, i made a big mistake by not reraising him all in after he'd shoved over 2/3 of his stack in anyway. if he was going to get that many chips in there, he was gonna call with the rest no matter what. so i lost about $100 there because i was really flustered about the outside possibility that he'd gotten his higher straight w/ a10. that was probably the mistake of the hand now that i review it. if you're gonna call there, you should really just get them all in while you're at it. so i'm irritated that i missed out there, but as you can see, i had a lot of things going through my mind at the time. which leads me to my next point...

one thing that i should point out in this hand is a general observation about connectors in 6MAX: i really dislike playing 89 and 910 out of position, suited or not. i was in the BB so it was free in this instance, but it doesn't mean i like to play it free either. i would much rather have 87 or 76 and have something work out than those two hands, because there is always the danger of someone backing into a higher straight w KQ or AK. and since those two hands get played all the time in six max, i make sure to give extra time and thought before getting involved in a big pot with 89 or 910.
