No reads at all except that he's seen the flop 8 of his last 16 hands - but I didn't even look at that. I just insta called. Good? Bad? Ugly?

I would, the only hand he would do this with that has you beat is two pair (in which case you still have outs) but I think JJ, AT or even a top pair with a flush draw is more likely, so I would expect you to be ahead most of the time. If he did this with a set I would be very surprised.

um i'd say if there are no reads i would call him down.. he might think you have high overcards and you're trying to buy the pot.. mebbe he has middle or top pair. most people online would call the flop and raise the turn with 2 pair or a set to extract an extra bet.

yes. a set of 10s/5s/4s does not play like this.
good call.
remember, even at higher stakes, strong means weak and weak means strong.

Hmmm ... worked out for you this time. If he were a good player with that stack size I think his hand range would be as follows:
:Ah: :Th:

44
55
TT
For me I don't play with less than a full buy-in so I'd probably lead into you with any of the above hands and hope that you'd re-raise so that I could then set you all-in.
But yeah, at 100NL you pretty much have to make this call ... it's easier to make if you have the :Kh:.
Nice hand.

I agree, except that I wouldn't take a king of hearts into any special consideration. Backdoor flush draws don't really hit often enough for my tastes - probably because online poker is rigged against me

The :Kh: is important because it takes away one of his outs not necessarily because it gives you a backdoor draw. This is usually only important when you put your opponent on a flush draw with overcards where the 4% difference that this makes is significant enough.
For example: say in this hand you held black Queens and were up against the AKh. He'd have 15 outs to beat you (>50% to win) where as if you hold the Qh then he's at %48.
Small edges ....
