Post subject: Aggressive or Laid Back?

When you start a heads up match... do you go in thinking you have a certain style to uphold? perhaps go in just htinking that a certain strategy will just topple this guy? Or do you just lay back and go with the flow. I know it depends on teh situation of course but just like to hear some opinions

It's good to not play too overly aggressive early because you just have no idea about your opponent, so just play straightforward and err on the passive side. Once you get a handle on the opponent you can amp up the aggressive or slow down, whatever you see fit.

I prefer to be not so aggressive when I am face to face but also depends on who you are playing against

I like to figure out my opponent's playing style and then adjust accordingly.. Pretty much echoing massimo here.

this unless you have sharkscope or tableratings in which case you can just 3b the first hand if he's a reg

I like to be agressive but only with the right hands and when Im in position. Worst hand I'll raise with on the button is 8 10. If he isn't a tricky check-raiser, and he checks to you, you can usually take down that nice pot whether you hit or not. When I'm out of position, I raise a lot less and with much better hands. The only time I'll raise the same amount as if I'm on the button is if my hand is already made (E.G. 8-8)

Do we use the standard 4xBB open or can we drop down to 3x since we don't have to worry about getting multiple callers?

4x is a lot... you won't see many flops if your opponent has half a brain.
Usually 3x, sometimes 2x or 2.5 against passive fish... but I always start with 3x... when my opponent seems very passive, I will try to bargain. If you can get his blind for 25% less, then by all means, take advantage.
It's really a game that you best figure out by yourself. Start a couple of sng's... look at what they're doing and try to exploit it.

i dont like to go into any game with a mindset.i think you should play the way the game and cards fall. i think there is too many variations to actually decide before hand.

I like to go into a match with a few simple guidelines:
1) When stakes are low: Bet 4x BB on raise from the button and 2x for raise OOP.
2) Raise with: Any ace, Any 2 face cards, any pair, 78+ suited connectors, and if in position Q8+.
3) When stakes are high: Bet 2x BB from button and min raise OOP.
4) Always make a continuation bet after a raise PF (Unless he is Check-Raising you a lot)

You are talking about sit en go heads up matches right? Its a whole different game from cash heads up play, my experience is that sit en go heads up matches are far more dependent on luck then cash game heads up matches.

4x is too much. Against aggressive 3beting opp. your wasting chips. Your range looks ok, but you might be able to open up more depending upon your opp. You should vary your bet size based on effective stacks and your opp's tendencies. C-bet favorable boards based on how tight or loose your opp is playing. Check raising can be better than c-betting depending on the board and your opp as well.

I prefer to be aggressive when it's head up but also depends on who is playing. But it is good to remove as many chips at first and then learn to handle the situation.

I think when you play heads up you need to take into account the player that you are playing. Try a multitude of different raises, reraises, limps, fold, until you figure out exactly where you can take advantage of the other player. If you need to be overly aggressive then try not to waste too much $$ until the blinds are higher ie 50 - 100. Make sure and dont bluff at a pot that there isnt any money at. If there is 60T$ in the pot and a scary board 9s Js 10c adn You have a a jack be weary of a big bet. I would be much more inclined to fold that jack to a reraise early in a heads up battle as opposed to late in a match.

i personally, am very aggressive at the start, mainly because i have had alot of success that way. Most might say thats not the way to go but it works for me. its alot easier to win when your oppenents down eairly.

Try to mix up your play as much as possible, sometimes if the player does not know you and you do not know him, its not bad to let him think you are a donkey. After that you can take more chips from him then the chips you have lost to him by being a donkey.
